Will be hoping the best for Hoyer and most likely Cassel. Both ex-Brady backups look to have beaten out 1st round rookies for starting jobs.

Cassel in particular has looked great this preseason. Maybe he can revitalize his career there, as the Vikings aren't short on weapons.

Thoughts on either of them and their future success/failure this season?

Seems like Hoyer cannot take a hit the first time he gets crunched by a couple of D-Linemen I expect Johnny Football to come in.

Smart move by Pettine. Give Manziel another month to get prepared instead of throwing him to the Dogs (Steelers, NO, Ravens) the first three weeks before their Week 4 bye. Both QB's looked horrific in their MNF preseason game. It will be especially difficult without Gordon who I imagine will miss the first 8 games or so.

I hope Hoyer does well so he can parlay that work in to a job elsewhere. He's clearly just keeping the QB seat warm for Manziel until he's ready.

Yeah! Awesome. I'm sure you guys are right about Manziel replacing him eventually, but I'll still be watching to see if Hoyer can make himself hard to replace.

If Mallett ends up somewhere soon, we could end up with 3 QBs from the Patriots development tree out there doing work. Pretty cool.

I say throw Manziel in so he can join the ranks of greatness, that is highly drafted Cleveland quarterbacks.

Cleveland really had no choice. You can't hand a rookie QB the job when A) he hasn't performed well enough to demand it, B) he's shown a lack of maturity and leadership on the field, and C) he's reportedly been late for meetings, bringing into question his work ethic and commitment to the team. It would send a terrible precedent for a club that needs a lot to go right for them to turn it around.

Definitely happy for Hoyer, and it was the right call. He played well when he was healthy last season, and starting Manziel week 1 would have been an unnecessary gamble (he won't be ready and the Steelers D isn't who you want your rookie QB getting his first start against). It's too bad for him that Josh Gordon will be suspended, that basically reduces their WR corps down to Andrew Hawkins, Miles Austin, Nate Burleson, and assorted trash. But they've upgraded at RB and still have an excellent TE and a good OL, so I think he'll do some damage even without Gordon.

Hoyer played in 39 games in college, starting his last 27 games without any type of injury. He gets injured on one play and suddenly he can't take a hit? What the hell?

The sports-media is throwing a fit right now because they didn't get their way. `Boo-hoo, Head coaches have more control over teams than we do.`

    Front page of NFL.com
"They could have been contenders" /sadface /sadface /sadface
Johnny Manziel should have been Cleveland Browns' pick at QB - NFL.com

    Kid isn't ready.

In the 80s and 90s this wouldn't even be a story. X would happen and sports-news would report. Now ESPN is like hyena-news.

The TMZ approach to professional sports has really gotten out of control in the last few years.

I saw Bridgewater in action last Saturday and I liked what I saw. I believe he's no bust at all. A lot of poise, good footwork and accuracy. Calm in the pocket. Minessota looks good at QB, not a surprise if they fight for the division against the Packers.

Bridgewater should be OK as soon as Minny's new domed stadium is completed, because he's gonna
suck outdoors after Thanksgiving. Cassel should have more success in the meantime than Hoyer will
in Cleveland, whose offense looks like it could be the worst in the entire league.

I'm glad Hoyer got to keep the starting position, but the line is not giving either guy time right now. If that continues, Manziel's scrambling ability is going to get him into games.

Tate and West have to both stay healthy and create 3rd and shorts for these guys to have a chance, no matter who is playing QB for them.

Not sure there was a "real" debate about Hoyer being the starter outside of the what the mediots concocted to gain website clicks.

Hoyer was the one that led them to the 3-0 record last year prior to getting injured, he's the one with the experience and composure.

The decision to select Johnny Manziel was made more for the future than who would start a few months later. It was never even close. A couple of the online sportsbooks that I saw had Hoyer as the clear cut favorite the whole time, and he was favored by so much that it wouldn't even have made much sense to lay money on it. I believe that Hoyer was -300.
