He sounds like a great kid, the Herald had a good article on him too. He's been getting up at 6am to get his knee healthy and was said, by Butch Davis, to be good in the weightroom before that. It still makes me roll my eyes about how he tested positive for pot when he knew he'd be tested (I assume he did, maybe he thought he wouldn't be as he wasn't working out) but despite his imperfections he sounds like a good kid.

I really think that once Edelman is back healthy he may have a hard time getting his time back on the field...I think Tate is going to be a good one by the end of next month.

It says that he's going to start splitting reps with Sam Aiken in the game against the Dolphins. Hopefully he really starts to do well. I have high hopes for this kid. If he does well, it's good for the team and it's good for me as I will have some crow to serve up to a certain number of individuals in this forum who gang attacked me instantaneously for even wondering if he could be a contributor in this offense and see time on the field. So far, I was right about him seeing time in the offense. Now he needs to contribute as much as he can and catch some passes. Really excited about him.

By the way, people, I still have the thread saved. :D

I think if Tate contributes enough (which is still an IF at this point), they'll either move Aiken back to special teams and have Edelman split time with Tate, or they'll have Tate take Aiken's spot split wide and have Edelman in on 4-WR sets. The latter is unlikely, I will admit, as it features two rookies in the receiving corps on offense. However, it isn't impossible.

The chances of him being another hopeful but end up as a WR bust like Chad Jackson is unlikely IMO,I see more potential in this kid than I ever did Jackson coming out of Florida, even with all the hoopla that went around Patriot Nation in post-draft April of 2006

Tate was a steal in the draft. It was a classic Patriot draft pick.

He had his man beat for a sure-fire long bomb TD this past Sunday but Brady underthrew him badly. Kid's got speed for sure and has all the tools to work out for us. I'm hoping.

If he can muster up 300 yards over the remaining games I'll be ecstatic. I don't see that happening though.

I don't quite get why everyone here expects a rookie WR who hasn't had much time with Brady to actually contribute in a substantial way to an offense as complicated as ours. Moreover, Tate wasn't even that amazing of a WR in college at least on the stat sheet. He was a much bigger threat in the return game.

Look i'm routing for this guy as much as anyone, but I think it is a big foolish to set relatively high expectations from this guy at this point in his career.

I was thinking that to but after the game Tate is quoted as saying he turn the wrong way or something to that effect and the INT was on him..

Either way.. I'm looking forward to this kid..

Yeah. I was thinking that as well. The athleticism is there, but the knowledge of the offense is not. Still, even knowing that, how impressed are you with his ability to get open and beat coverage deep? The knowledge will come and what better time for him to come in for his first game then the game preceding the bye week?

Yeah. A couple of weeks ago, it was really foolish to talk about this guy seeing time in the starting offense. Look what just happened in the Bucs game.

Although, I do agree. I will be well satisfied with 300-400 yards receiving out of him for the rest of the year.

It really depends how his feel for the game is. Supposedly he knows the playbook fairly well; some guys are going to click with Brady very quickly, others aren't. The odds of him totally getting it this year are small but the odds of him being clueless are equally small, IMO. More likely he'll have some routes/situations he does great it and others that he doesn't and they'll have to play him to his strengths - or largely go with Aiken and Edeman once the latter returns. Regardless, playing now is fantastic for his readiness next year and there's a shot (I'd say 20% or so) that he gets "it" enough that he can contribute a decent amount.

Probably nothing but it's funny.. When I watched his 1st kickoff return, i remember thinking, he looks comfortable and was able to slide up the field gaining a couple of extra yards.. It wasn't much but you can see something..

While you were sleeping, the Pats drafted Julian Edelman who is a rookie WR who contributed his first game and was going great until he broke his arm.

I wasn't sleeping and you are correct. But to expect a WR to work out just like Edelman is unbased. Julian Edelman contributed immediately. But it still remains true that most don't. Thus, my point stands.

I am extremely hopeful that Tate will be a contributor this year, but I am tempering my expectations. For two reason. First, he is coming off a pretty significant injury to his knee. It is totally reasonable to think he may not get back to 100% this year. So some of the things we've seen him do on film still might be lost until he's fully recovered, say next season. Second, knowing the playbook takes more than just reading it, which is all that he has been doing. Having your body react quickly and in a fluid motion to what is on the page is another matter. Again, it is only fair to give him time to add that to his repertoir.

Let's not put too much pressure on the kid. If he has 15-20 catches, contributes on ST and appears to be improving at seasons end we should be satisfied. Any more is gravy, IMO.

Just having him on the field and getting the ball in certain situations gives me a much better feeling than having Galloway on the sidelines. That said, I think he is the 5th reciever when Edelman is healthy.

Everyone seems to want recievers to leapfrog Aiken on the depth chart. I don't get it... when Aiken gets the ball, he runs with a style similar to TO/Brandon Marshall. I think he may be the best RAC reciever we have, and that is even considering Welker. He seems to be a great option at the other wideout. Does he just have trouble getting open or what? I just don't see why he is only considered a STer by many when he has shown more on the field than a rookie with upside who has only played in one game.

BTW I AM on the Tate bandwagon, just think Aiken hasn't gotten enough credit.

Aiken has provided great YAC but in my opinion he's more valuable in the kicking game (ST). If Tate can digest the offense he would be able to stretch the field as a true number 3 and provide more single coverage to Moss.

Robertweathers position on Brandon Tate since draft day....

    "He'll never play this year"-WRONG
"He'll go on IR before Week 1"- WRONG
"He'll go IR after the PUP expires"-WRONG
    "He'll never be active gameday"-WRONG
"He'll just play special teams"- WRONG
"He won't be in on many offensive snaps"- WRONG

Obviously I have no idea what I am talking about....

This guy is busting his butt trying to contribute to this team and BB sees enough progress in this kid to put him out there and be sucessful.

Actually, I think it was a classic San Diego Chargers draft pick. :) Spending a pick in the top half of the draft on highly regarded players who slipped because of injury has been the Chargers' MO (McNeill, Cromartie, Waters) -- I don't recall BB ever doing it before.

(One time a lot of fans were rooting for that approach was Michael Bush at the bottom of the 3rd in 2007. The Patriots instead traded that pick away, and away, and away so that it ended up becoming Oscar Lua in 2007, 2/3 of Matt Slater in 2008, and 2/3 of Ron Brace in 2009.)

History has shown that WRs who suffer major knee injuries just need a bit more time to get back to their origional level of play than say QBs. Plus, being a rookie WR in this offense where there hasn't been a strong track record of newbies coming in and contributing in the passing game was another factor in my assesment. Just going by that. Never questioned Tate's skills...

What this kid has done in his rehab and the fact that BB and the staff have the confidence that he can contribute THIS YEAR is amazing to me. Part of it may be that Edelman is hurt and the Galloway failure has accelorated the timetable for Tate's return, but at the end of the day if BB didn't think the kid couldn't handle it mentally and physically, he simply would not be out there. I am convined of that.
