Brandon Lloyd VERY interested in joining the Patriots

LLoyd is okay if he comes in at around 5-6.. But we still need a deep threat.. Lloyd has problems with the Jam and is not that fast.. He wouldn't stretch the field.. While he's better than branch and ocho at this point, we'll still need to address the position in FA or draft..

Deep threats are overrated, but Lloyd was a dep threat specialist until McDaniels got a hold of him and rounded out his game. Prior to McDaniels, all Lloyd was used for was mostly go routes.

can't be worse than Ochocinco... that's for sure.

The important part there: the guy was a beast in the Patriots offensive system. I don't care much what he did elsewhere - as we've seen, production (or even lack of production) does not translate from a non-Patriots offense to the Patriots offense.

There's so much less guess work with a guy like Lloyd. WR has been one of our biggest boom/bust positions, and Lloyd is one of the easier vet FA WRs to project in years.

As for how much we will or won't spend on the WR position - I think some posters oughta reconsider their stance. Pioli (and Belichick by extension) is on record as saying they are re-evaluating the importance of certain positions like WR3 and slot corner based on the # of snaps they play.

The Patriots valued that position enough last year to trade for Ochocinco and give him a decent extension.

Let's remind ourselves that two of our best offensive weapons, Gronk & Hernandez, will continue to be dirt cheap for the next two years - including under $2 million in cap hit next year. Our RBs have a total cap hit of $3 million next year, unless we re-up with BJGE, and even if we do, he'll come cheap too.

We have a bunch of guys hugely overperforming their contracts - on both sides of the ball right now, and only one (Ochocinco) not performing up to it. That's incredibly fortunate - and very rare.

Bottom Line: Had they had a better outside WR on February 5th, we'd be celebrating our 4th Super Bowl ring right now. Upgrading that position this offseason should be rather simple, and all it will cost is money.

I swear, sometimes posters would rather be right than this team improve or win (obviously not directed at you or your post Rob, at all, more of a general comment on some posts I've seen this offseason).

Lloyd is a deep threat...will be the best deep thread we have had since the 07 season if he comes here

I think we are getting this guy.

Not saying he isn't now, but that was all he was before McDaniels. Now he can run the complete route tree.

I agree that Lloyd is a safe bet who can be elite in the Pats' system. he may not be, but he is a far safer bet than Mile Wallace (who all the deep threat guys want) who will cost more and require a first round draft pick and comes from a simple offense. We have seen several WRs who were elite (well, at one point in their career) come to the Pats system and struggle to learn the system (Holt, Ochocinco, Joey Galloway). Being a great speed guy doesn't guarantee you will fit in the Pats' system.

A guy like Moss fit in quickly because he had a lot of football intelligence and picked up the system quickly. He is a rarity though.

let's see...I already had Welker getting the tag back on the day after the Super Bowl

and that day I posted my opinion that the Pats would sign Lloyd if he was made a FA

2 weeks ago I got on record that Manning will sign with the Fins

I still have a real good shot at going 3 for 3...which will infuriate a certain nameless hater on this board...just thought I'd let you know (you KNOW who you are)....

Dude! If you are going to call me out, at least call me out by name. :D

sorry Rob...but you have a LONG way to go to get into the stratospheric level of know-it-all-ness and long winded righteous pomposity that this dude exhibits on a daily basis...besides, I find I agree with you on most topics, somewhere in the 90 percentile...no, I'm not going to cast aspersions in particular just yet...let's see where these other two topics of interest end up...

Not looking for a one trick pony but we could use someone who can stretch the field. he's good at med range catches and turning it up.. He has skill after catching the ball.. But a deep threat pushes the safties back, will enable the TE's to do more damage..

He's actually pretty poor after the catch with a career YAC average of 2.8 and well below that last year.

Your impression of Lloyd is mistaken, he is a deep threat who stretches the field and makes a lot of catches down the field but doesn't do much after the catch. He'd either push a safety back or he'd punish teams for leaving him in single coverage to double Welker and Gronk.

Look who has been throwing him the ball. When you have to constantly make major adjustments to catch a ball, it is hard to turn it up field. There is no one better than Brady at hitting a receiver in stride. His YAC would improve dramatically with Brady throwing him the ball.

Dont remember the game, but there was a sideline catch from Tebow Lloyd caught last season that was one of the best I've seen.

Again deep threats are overrated whether they are one trick ponies or a complete WR. The Pats won three Super Bowls without a legitimate deep threat. More recently, the Saints, Colts, and Steelers have all won Super Bowls without a true deep threat WR.

The point with Lloyd is that he is a WR that can be an outside the numbers threat. He will keep teams from flooding the middle of the field. He would be perfect for this offense. Welker, Lloyd, Gronk, Hernandez with Ridley or Vareen in the backfield...that would be a very tough offense to scheme for, since it can do anything. They could run the ball, they could go deep, you could put Hernandez outside and move welker to the slot, put Hernandez in the slot....it is a fantastic offense.

This is a good point, and I agree with you about your earlier point re: Moss being a one of a kind convergence of football IQ and natural athletic ability. I don't think even Belichick anticipated the degree to which he would grasp the system.

But to this point - all three of those teams could stretch the field with their passing game. They just didn't have a one dimensional player who was designated for stretching the field. I agree with that.

The reason the Packers, Saints and now Giants have won the last 3 SBs is simply b/c they had more weapons than the team they were playing. The Giants had a better receiving crew, and when we focused on Cruz and Nicks, Manningham beat us for the biggest play of the game.

Now, had Gronk been healthy, maybe we would've had more weapons, and we would've won. Depressing thought, but likely true.

It just comes to this - if you have more weapons on offense than the other team's defense can stop, you're going to win a lot of games in the NFL. The Patriots were one weapon short the last two years. They tried to address it in the offseason last year with Ocho, and it failed. They will try again to address it this year.

I have always said that an outside WR is far more important than a deep threat. Deep threats make highlight reels, but it is the outside threat that can more impact games.
