Though he'll never admit to it, I'm sure Brady cares deep down about it as well. You're talking about a guy that came into the league as a sixth round draft pick with a Grand Canyon sized chip on his shoulder. Yes, winning comes first. It always should. But you know Brady wants that record.

Brady didn't throw a TD in the playoff game against Baltimore last year.

How would you compare this streak to the 10+ assist/game - easier/harder?

That seems to be tracked as a separate record. Probably because the number of Playoff games has changed so much over the years (one in Johnny U's day vs. as many as four today) and because not all QB's play in a lot of post season games.

Anyway, here are the stats for regular and post season (uninterrupted):

Brees. 46 (43 regular season plus three postseason). 9/9/10 thru last week.
    Favre. 39 (36 plus three). 10/20/02 thru 11/29/04.
Brady. 34 (32 plus two). 9/12/10 thru 1/14/12 (Brady did not throw for a TD in the AFCCG v the Ravens last year.)

I think it would be much harder. Rondo, when he's not busy being a punk and scratching people, makes it look pretty easy.

Saints are 1-6 this year when Brees has over 40+ attempts though that also most likely has something to do with that D.

Agreed 100%. This is also one of the few records that I believe is important to the Players as well, especially to one as competitive as Brady. It should go without saying that if had to choose between this record and another Lombardi that Brady would take the Lombardi.

But this is a record that stood for over half a century before Brees topped it this year. I wish posters would stop dissing his accomplishment; it makes the Board look ignorant and uninformed about NFL history.

Just think of the great QB's who have played since it was set: Starr, Staubach, Montana, Marino, P. Manning...to name a few. None of them have even sniffed at it the way Brees and Brady have.

Yes, I think we all agree that another Lombardi is the ultimate goal ...

... so can we please stop bringing it up on every single discussion about a Patriot individual accomplishment/record/award?

    Here's a typical discussion:

"Hey, Brady should win MVP. Here are some compelling stats."

3 posts later, a deluge of:

"That doesn't matter! It's all about the SB MVP!"

    Yeah, no ****. :bricks:

Your post doesn't matter. It's all about the Lombardi, baby.

Honestly it will matter slightly less when Brady does it than when Brees did it. Just like when Brady broke Manning's record.

The significance comes from how long the record stood before it was broken. In each case a year or so later Brady breaking it is cool and every bit as impressive but the historical significance won't be there.

Agreed, Kontra. I put this record (almost) in the same category as DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak.

There are so many variables that come into play: weather, good calls by refs, bad calls by refs, dumb holding penalties that get a TD called back, dropped balls, great catches, being a little under the weather with a cold or the flu but still able to play, injuries to the O-Line, blocking in the backfield and, of course, that most intangible and very important variable, plain old fashioned luck, both good and bad...etc., etc.

For today, maybe. But, 25 years from now it would be Brady's record that some kid who's in diapers today will be trying to break, not Drew Brees', just as folks this year were focused on Unitas' record and not on Favre's.

Sure, Brady's bio will always begin with the number of Lombardi's he has won, the number of times he was League MVP, the number of times he was SB MVP and the number of times he was All Pro. But this record would be at the top of any personal records he might set.

Canton has yet to update Johnny U's brief one page bio, but it includes this line: "His record of at least one touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games may stand forever."

Heh heh. Well said. A fair comment.

But, I'll make the age old response to that genre of comment: if Unitas' record is so much "more impressive," and by implication today's accomplishment so much "less impressive," why are Brady, Brees and Favre the only QB's to play in the last five, ten, 25, 50 (pick your time horizon) years even to sniff at the record, including the Almighty Peyton Manning?

Yes, this thread specifically will hold all blame. Puh-lease.

it's ok bc I'm starting a new thread "Pats will lose consecutive SBs" to counter our disappointment.

    Disable Jersey

Postseason is not counted in with regular season when it comes to such records.

Sorry, I don't really see how impressive this record is in a league that is pass oriented. Why should I be awe-struck at Brees's record when I saw him throw a TD pass with 10 seconds left on the clock in a game they had no chance of winning, just to keep the streak going?

Moreover, I am thoroughly unimpressed with 1-2 yard dump offs to running backs that end up being 30+ yard touchdowns - Qb's should not be credited with a TD in those situations. I am far too young to have watched Unitas, but I have watched enough of the Saints the past few years, and specifically Drew Brees to see how much individual stats mean to the dude. I really don't think his streak was all that brilliant.

I personally don't know Brady, but for a guy that his arguably the greatest to ever play the game; multiple SB rings, MVP’s, and countless records - I find it hard to believe that he would be passionate about getting this one, or that he would even be aiming for it.

EDIT: I meant to hit the quote button for this post, I am too lazy to go find the one I was replying to.
