It should be obvious that our QB is one of the best in the League, nobody could dispute that. What bears watching, however, is his seeming decline in post-season play.
Of his 5 sacks yesterday, 4 were "coverage sacks"....and the 5th was caused by a bad formation which allowed a blitzing DB to slip through. The O-Line played pretty well...considering...to include a 4.4 yard avg. on running plays. As some have pointed out, Tom had many situations where his O-line provided him plenty of time to make a throw.. ...or run it himself for a first down (he doesn't seem to have any qualms about the QB sneak during short yardage situations). And this against a Jet's defensive line that is supposed to be one of their strengths.
I'd say the excellent coverage by the Jets secondary, combined with the pressure defense of their front seven, was the difference. It kept us from taking control of the game...and forcing the Jets into a passing-oriented offense.
And our defense was dealt several "bad hands" during this game, principally due to the bad plays by the offense or special teams. You really can't ask this young defense to play any better...allowing only 14 first downs, 300 yards total offense, and a respectable performance on 3rd down conversions. Admittedly, we had no sacks and precious little pressure on Sanchez, so the need for a pass rushing specialist cannot be disputed when building next year's Team. The play of our QB really needed to compensate for the young defense...just as the play of the Jet's defense compensated for their young QB....but that didn't happen.
I believe there were many coaching gaffes, as well, so the blame doesn't rest entirely on Brady's shoulders. However a QB of his experience and talent needs to overcome sub-optimal coaching on a stage such as this.
But maybe our expectations for TFB are misplaced?
During these playoffs:
Defeated quarterbacks (and their ages): Brees/32, Manning/34, Brady/33, Hasselbeck/35
Winning quarterbacks: Sanchez/24, Cutler/27, Rodgers/27, Roethlisberger/28
Does this constitute a pattern?
Montana won his last Super Bowl at age 33, Bradshaw at age 31, and Aikman at age 29.
