Bowl games - draft prospect watch

Status
Not open for further replies.
Although Wisconsin got blown up, in the earlier part of the game, it was apparent that Hill likes to run behind Urbik, who was road grading FSU DL guys off the LOS with ease. If it was not for Unger of Oregon, I would be extremely high on taking Urbik on day two of the draft. His pass protection skills needs some Dante loving that is for sure, but as a road grader, he is one of if not the best in college this year.
I kept dozing off during that game, but I don't know why Wisconsin didn't ride those big boys up front harder.

Part of the problem was because they fell behind and the other part of the problem was an inability of Wisconsin to shut off backside pursuit. The TE's and OL guys on the backside, including Urbik when plays went to the other side, were not holding their blocks, so the FSU speed was able to chase things down.

I still thought Wisconsin gave up on the run well before they fell behind, but I'll be watching the recording and will take a closer look at the backside pursuit you noted.

Hawaii Bowl Hawaii vs. Notre Dame

Players to watch: Hawaii

#94 David Veikune, DE, (rSr), 6-3, 265 - Should be a decent 4-3 DE.

#57 Jake Ingram, LS, (Sr), 6-3, 236 - Well, if we do need a replacement for Paxton...

#55 John Estes, C, (rJr), 6-2, 295 - Okay.

Players to watch: Notre Dame

#40 Maurice Crum Jr., ILB, (rSr), 5-11, 235 - The thing that stood out the most was his on-field direction to the youngsters he was lining up. I won't be surprised if he winds up in NE, but he's probably going to be a Reserve for Carolina or someone with a similar defense.

#77 Michael Turkovich, OG, (Sr), 6-5, 305 - looks like a decent UDFA prospect.

#27 David Bruton, FS, (Sr), 6-2, 212 - Nice looking FS making plays out there.

#28 Kyle McCarthy, SS, (rJr), 6-1, 205 - I'd take a chance on him as a UDFA.

#74 Sam Young, OT, (Jr), 6-8, 330 - Not bad.

#55 Eric Olsen, OG, (Jr), 6-5, 303 - Not bad.

#49 Toryan Smith, ILB, (Jr), 6-1, 245 - He was one of a number of bigger backers tearing around the field making plays for Charlie.

Players not on my short list who jumped out at me:

Hawaii

#2 Ryan Mouton, CB, (Sr), 5-10, 180 - They moved him to FS where he was a human rocket all over the field making plays. 4.4 speed, Returner, the only bad thing is his size means he'll get broken the way he hits.

#58 John Fonoti, DE, (rJr), 6-2, 255 - Hustling, athletic kid whom I'd consider for SILB development if he was available.

Notre Dame

#31 Sergio Brown, SS, (Jr), 6-2, 205 - This kid is a stud!

#88 Hakeem Nicks, WR, (Jr), 6-1, 210 - Rd 2 projection for 2010 by NFL Draft Scout.

After that clinic he put on yesterday, I would expect that he'll have another outstanding season should he return to the college scene next year and be a high first round pick. This kid has got it all, size, speed, and hands. Hell, if he goes this year, I think he goes in the first round.

Independence Bowl Louisiana Tech vs. Northern Illinois

Players to watch - Louisiana Tech

#34 Antonio Baker, FS, (Jr), 5-11, 200 - Hard hitting S who was around the ball a lot.

Players to watch - Northern Illinois

#51 Larry English, OLB, (rSr), 6-3, 254 - The announcers compared him to Indy's Robert Mathis, very fast off the edge. He flashed a couple good plays and showed some discipline/awareness staying home on a reverse to add a TFL to his stat. LA Tech made an effort to account for him. No. IL. changed their D since I saw their Central Michigan game, they are now running a 3-4 with English playing up on his feet on run downs - though I did not see him in coverage.

Players not on my short list who jumped out at me:

Louisiana Tech

#35 Weldon Brown, 5-10/187, CB, SR - Very aware playmaker, he also packed quite a punch for his size.

#20 Daniel Porter, 5-10/190, RB, JR - Speedy/shifty RB who also showed some WR skills.

#6 Phillip Livas, 5-8/175, WR, SO - I've only been noting rSO due to their draft eligibility, but this kid is one to watch next season, possible 4.3 speed helped him return a 97 yd KR for a TD.

#11 Ross Jenkins, 6-3/212, QB, RS SO - Needs good QB and Strength coaches, but highly mobile with okay arm strength, who showed toughness against the blitz and good judgement.

Northern Illinois

#83 Reed Cunningham, TE, 6-5, 245, RS JR - Described as the QB's 'safety blanket,' he was a favorite target who also looked pretty good blocking.

#56 Brandon Bice, DE, 6-4, 250, RS JR - This kid stood out in the Central Michigan game and still looks good in this game as an OLB candidate.

#99 Craig Rusch, DT, 6-4, 265 - Did not play, I researched it and he hurt his knee returning a fumble for a TD against Kent State. I only have his play in the Central Michigan game to go on, but I really liked this kid's game and think he'd be a worthy UDFA signing to get him in for some homework assignments from Pepper & Woicik/Nash, then let him go home and work on bulking up. He looks like he could play a Jarvis Green role in the 3-4.

#4 David Bryant, DB, 5-10, 205, RS JR - Good looking sideline to sideline FS.

If No. IL stays with the 3-4 then NE fans need to keep an eye on them, they have some younger DL/OLB kids to monitor.

Watch Corey Wootton of Northwestern against Missouri on Monday. He's a junior who is rumored to be coming out (per draft daddy). I caught his games twice this year and was impressed. Very big DE for college at 6'7 and 270lbs.

here is his draft scout profile: Corey Wootton*|*Northwestern,*DE*:*2010 NFL Draft Scout Player Profile

Where do you see Wooton fitting in? Do you see him as an Adalius Thomas clone? Someone like Willie McGinest? Or do you see him as a Jarvis Green type DE.

Are there any interesting players in the "NC State vs Rutgers - PapaJohns.com Bowl"?

Because of his height, I would put him at DE, but not until he adds a good 15 to 20 pounds of muscle and maybe somemore sand in his pants.

But then there is the neck injury. That is going to need some serious research.

Courtney Greene of Rutgers looks inpressive and if Merriweather takes over at SS, Greene could be a very nice 3rd round compliment at FS.

Alamo Bowl (23) Northwestern vs. (21) Missouri
When: Dec 29, 2008 Time: 8:00 PM EST TV: ESPN

Players to watch - Northwestern

#19 Tyrell Sutton, RB, (Sr), 5-08, 205 - Late rounds - 12/17/08 - Northwestern running back Tyrell Sutton (broken wrist) returned to practice on Tuesday. Coach Pat Fitzgerald said Sutton is "probable" for the Alamo Bowl but a final determination has yet to be made. Sutton has been fitted with a protective brace and a decision on whether Sutton will play or not will be based on how much pain he can handle. Judging by Sutton's apparent desire to return for one last game in a Wildcat uniform, we expect Sutton to be on the field Dec. 29 against Missouri. - USA TODAY

He certainly stepped up there in the second half. I was doing something else and didn't watch to analyze the players so I'll have to watch the recording for more detail.
