Borges Scandal " Now Has Legs" Update - BSMW

Anyone know if other columnists such as Reiss have also done this?

If it is an industry-wide 'accepted' practice, then we might all be barking up the wrong tree.

Worse, this will make Borges paint this as a BB-Patsfans-Joint Venture/Conspiracy to tarnish him :D

In a word.....no.

The fact that bostonsportsmedia.com, the Boston Phoenix, the Boston Herald and Editor and Publisher have all picked this up this afternoon and stormed about Borges' action says pretty clearly to me that this is out of bounds in the industry.

But the Globe hasn't said "eveyone does it", they're looking into it, so I assume what Borges did must go a little beyond what is accepted.

And I've read several people, including Bruce from BSMW, say this happens all the time in the football notes column. But do people have examples of other writers copying so much verbatim in their notes column?

If it was no big deal, then I think someone would say it. Someone from the Globe, or other reporters or something.

Re: Re Borges: Put Yourself in Mike Sando's Shoes

Shmess - as a mod I would hope you would merge this with one of the other 2 existing threads on the same subject. I know it's one of your hot button issues, but we need fewer but better threads here, not folks looking to insure their individual position is more thoroughly considered by starting additional seperate competing threads on the same subject.

Plagiarism is not acceptable if others in the industry do it -- it's a violation of another individual's copyright. Copyright protects the expression of an idea, not the idea itself; therefore, wholesale reuse of another writer's words is always out of bounds. Footnoting that info came from other sources does not get one off the hook!

If this is common practice, maybe the fuss over Borges will bring it to an end. It is not only wrong, it is LAZY and dishonest.

If I were Borges' boss, I'd find it fascinating that I was paying him for someone else's work. Maybe I'd syndicate Sandro instead.

I've read some of his stuff today.....he's like a West Coast version of Mike Reiss.

GREAT idea. Can Borges and replace him with the guy from whom he stole!

Fair enough.

Sorry man, I am not too convinced because the last three sites that you cited merely mention that chff claim this and after giving examples, they also note that Borges has the usual disclaimer clause in the ending. So, they are just reporting a claim without discussing much into it and do not give their opinon.

So, in as much as I would love to have Borges admit that he is sorry that he copied because he was busy preparing an anti-BB story, I have doubts whether he could be nailed.

Separate query: is Bostonsportsmedia.com considered to be equivalent to a news portal (like any other media website) or a round-up/opinion of the views expressed by the region's sportsmedia?

NYC, the reason they are merely reporting the claims is because (for them) this story is just developing today. Wait until tomorrow's Phoenix, Herald (and yes, Globe) for more in-depth opinion from these sources.

Regarding your question re: bostonsportsmedia.com, I would classify it as pretty much a hybrid news portal/round-up site with more emphasis on the round-up side.

Editor and Publisher is sort of the industry bible, however. Like what Variety is to Hollywood. If this was merely the ranting of us web psychos, they wouldn't have run with it. There's more there.
