BenJarvus Green-Ellis bound for free agency

    Green-Ellis bound for free agency | CSNNE.com | Tom E. Curran

There has been "dialogue" between Green-Ellis' camp and the Patriots but an agreeable offer for the fifth-year running back out of Ole Miss hasn't emerged.

A source indicated that Green-Ellis would be a "coveted" prospect when he does hit the market.

After running for 1,008 yards in 2010 and getting 4.4 yards per carry, Green-Ellis' numbers dropped considerably in 2011 with 667 yards on 181 carries (3.7 YPA).

One thing that hasn't dropped? The ball when Green-Ellis is carrying it. He's never fumbled in his NFL career. He's also scored 24 touchdowns in the past two seasons.

The Pats have likely told him to go test the waters and come back with a deal to set his value.

    Which teams need a RB?

Right move on the Patriots' part, IMO. He's a good enough back, but the skills that he brings to the table are far from irreplaceable. If someone wants to overpay him, then good for him; if not, we might get him back for a more reasonable price tag. Even if he leaves, I'm not sure that we don't already have players on the roster who will be better than him by week 1.

Guys like him ... usually have a chance for one pay day ... especially that he is a RB. He deserves the most he can get ... hopefully he stays for a bit + a bit more less than that.

BJGE just seemed to fit well with the makeup of this team.

If he goes elsewhere I don't see anywhere near the kind of production he had in NE....he may end up being a 400 yard third depth backup on his next team.

And that's his problem. He is more known for his ball security than his dynamic running ability. He is never going to give you much more than what we've seen here. He's a decent pass blocker, but nothing out of the ordinary. He gets what the OL gives him, but little on his own. Now in a league where RBs are the most fungible commodity, who is going to give Benny more than $2MM/yr for more than 3 years.

I think the Pats would do $1.8MM for 3 years with 2 guaranteed. I can see him doing slightly better than that because he a TD machine with a decent OL, but not THAT much better.

Evan Silva, whose opinion I don't necessarily respect, told me a couple weeks ago that BJGE would get a PierreThomasLikeDeal.

It was comforting to have the ball in his hands because you knew he wouldn't put the ball on the ground. He had decent power. However he couldn't find the open field. His lack of huge runs is the reason for his low YPC. A lot of teams can't do what the Patriots do- dink and dunk our way down the field for long drives without making mistakes. For this reason, I think his value is best for us, as opposed to another team. If not, goodluck to him, and I'll remember his as a good guy as long as he stays out of the division...

I think the law firm is a bit underrated as to what he does for the offense. While he is not a flashy RB he is effective. Admittedly I am biased because everytime I'm tempted to critique BJGE, visions of "Dancing Maroney' make me appreciate him all the more.

This kind of article is insightful, but for only one reason--it indicates that Benny is one of Curran's sources on the team.

Boston writers will produce these kinds of ball-washing articles when one of their guys is becoming a free agent, or about to retire, get traded, or get cut. It's kind of a payback. It's probably even more common with the Red Sox. Happens with front-office types as well as players.

Let's assume he's got another three years left in the league, then goes on to a job in coaching, teaching HS, or something like that, where he's making $40,000 - $60,000 per year. Doing that for 30 years will make him about $1M in present-day dollars. For the next three years, he could make four or five times that. Benny: I hope you have a good agent, I hope you don't get hurt, I hope you save your money, and I hope you leave football in semi-good health. Best wishes.

How is it bad news? You can plug in a ton of RBs and produce with our passing game, we might already have the guy to do it.

    Might is the operative word...

We might have a guy who never fumbles..

We might have a guy who has a nose for the goal line..

We might have a guy who is low maintainence and is a positive influence on this team...

    Lots of mights...

in that case, the pats need to get rid of ridley and woodhead, give BJGE a lifetime deal......they need to get rid of vereen also, because he fumbled in college

people who have fumbled before need not apply

    Might be.

BJGE might want to break the bank. Oh well, if so, now I see why BB drafted Vereen and Ridley. Ridleys fumblitis is concerning though.

I like Benny a lot, but he just doesn't have "enough" for me to be upset whether he stays or goes. If he stays, fine; if someone else is going to pay him a lot more money, good for him, and also fine. Wish I felt more strongly one way or another.

About the only situation I get p***ed here is if he leaves à la Gaffney, signing something like 4 y/$8M elsewhere.

I'm grateful for his production over the past two years, mostly 2010. But how about we give the ball to the guys who we drafted so damn early but never get playing time. I know there were injuries but you get the gist.
