$10 million of our hard earned dollars, going to help fascilitate outsourced US jobs overseas. Is this crap for real?

Bishop Blasts Use Of Taxpayer Dollars To Support Outsourcing

Patchogue - Congressman Tim Bishop joined communications workers who lost their jobs in the recession to protest a program that would use approximately $10 million in taxpayer funds to help train workers in Sri Lanka for jobs in the outsourcing industry.

In a press conference at the New York State One-Stop Career Center in Patchogue, Bishop called on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to drop its proposed pilot program that would help train 3,000 Sri Lankans in information technology, business process outsourcing, and call center support. Following their training, the tech workers would be placed with outsourcing vendors in the region that provides offshore IT and business services to American companies looking to take advantage of low labor costs.

"This is simply outrageous; this is perhaps the dumbest and most counter-productive use of taxpayer money that I have encountered in the eight years I have been in office," Bishop said, flanked by laid off members of Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1108 based in Patchogue. "Whether its $10 million or one nickel, I will fight against any taxpayer funds being used to subsidize outsourcing."

    Oh oh.....Bishop is a "D."

Does this mean that any bill he attempts to pass which outlaws this kind of nonsense will automatically fall under Republican disfavor?

a couple of weeks ago I stumbled onto a way to get rid of those funny talking people that get on the phone with you when your a having an appliance problem, I called my computer co's support service, the guy that came on the phone and said "day by belp boo" I tried to tell him my problem, he just kept babbling on he sounded like a Boston Cab Driver from Borneo finally I said to him "hey, I don't know one f-cking word your saying" CLICK I immediately had an american on the phone that talked better than I do.

Sorry. I had just finished reading a week old article on Sharron Engle's latest interview with FOXNews where she said if she was elected she would do her best to wield her power as a Junior Senator by joining Republicans to block tax hikes, excess regulation and spending bills, and Supreme Court nominees who don't meet a strict constitutional test, including Elena Kagan.

"There are certain things that can be done just by your junior senator," Angle said, explaining that even if Republicans remain in the minority after 2010, she could filibuster, which allows lone lawmakers to delay legislation through lengthy debate.

"I guarantee that I can talk most anything to death."

I guess I got carried away.

Good on him! These are the kinds of politicians I want in office, politicians who actually do something for the people they represent.

I don't think everyone in power is necessarily on board with the concept of helping America or Americans, and I think people are waking up to that difference, at least I hope so. If we don't wake up to that fact we might as well kiss it all buh bye. Who thought of this anyway?

I don't think it was intended to hurt Americans, just that USAID's role in this case may do so.

Sounds terrific. Silly me for thinking that $10 million of US taxpayer money, is being spent overseas, to train foreignors so US companies can hire them in their desire to outsource American jobs. My bad.

Leave, what was it you mentioned earlier?

    What part of this:

In June, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization said it was helping the Sri Lankan government provide jobs to an estimated 40,000 widows in the island's northern and eastern regions.

A USAID spokeswoman said the program "will not displace American IT workers."

"The program's goal is to prepare young adults in this very fragile, post-conflict environment to find jobs in the local economy and to build a basic local skills base that will encourage large Sri Lankan companies based in the south and east to invest in this region, USAID said.

    did you have trouble understanding?

The reality is, NO issue is partisan. Anyone who believes otherwise lacks the ability to think for themselves.

"Well Sir, what do you think?"

"Well, let me find out where my party stands before I comment"

That, in a nutshell, is STUPIDITY.

What an idiotic way to spend OUR tax dollars. WTF cares about widows in Sri Lanka when we have 16% of American workers out of work?

    Not many I'd say.....

Truth. I think Lisa Lang was the last journalist to do any kind of MSM expose on the tent cities springing up all over this country back in 09, and OT but I'm a little disappointed in Fox for not reporting on it more. Anyway, Bishop has the right philosophy.

Tent cities are still popping up everywhere and the population of those cities is growing. Too bad Gates etc didn't throw a little money their way. Looking for a charity? March 2010

Hey look, I found your picture on the internets.

Seriously now, let's look at this from a real world perspective. Private outsourcing, and IT corporations, out of the kindness of their heart invest, ahem, donate millions of their own money, to teach outsource related IT training to southeast Asian's, where outsourcing is king. The US subsidizes this training to the tune of $10 million, but hey, it won't ever, never, ever cost us jobs. It has nothing to do with IT outsourcing, it's just training future employees, ahem, poor people how IT works, cuz having more english speaking IT professionals in your country, is just as important as learning carpentry, architecture, how to farm, etc. Lord knows Shri-Lanka is suffering from a lack of quality IT people who know how to use Java, and can speak English. If they had more of those, then all their problems would be solved from within.

Harry: where did you come up with the idea that USAID is a librul organization? Do you just label everything you dislike as librul? USAID has existed for decades and been funded by both Dem and Repub admins, including your Dear Messiah Prince Bush

LND: where did you come up with the idea that Gates hasn't given money to help the homeless? Or that anybody here, left or right, doesn't care about the homeless?

Chico please embrace the concept of context when you put words in people's mouths. TIA and no, I don't do the endless post-for-post nitpicking. If Gates et al gave signifigant monies to tent city dwellers it didn't make the news. And I have no clue what you or anyone else "cares about", I only know what you and anyone else posts about. In this thread all I see are posts about the needs of Sri Lanka. :confused2:

I did not want to single anyone out here so I went with what I found on only one page of this thread. I know there are many more of you who feel this way, so forgive me in advance for not mentioning your names as well.

What strikes me is the fact that most of those who have the isolationist "help the people at home" mindset are also generally the first ones who scream, "Not my tax dollars," when the subject of welfare, unemployment extensions, Medicare, Medicaid and health insurance for all Americans is brought up.

What, exactly, would you like to see American "charitably earmarked" tax dollars support, anyhow?

Or is the truth that you really don't want to have your tax dollars spent to help anyone other than yourselves?
