For whatever it's worth which is not much.

    Complete head to head record:

1991 Cleveland (Bill) beat KC (Marty) 20-15
1994 KC (Marty) beat Cleveland (Bill) 20-13
1995 Cleveland (Bill) beat KC (Marty) 35-17
2002 San Diego (Marty) beat NE (Bill) 21-14
2005 San Diego (Marty) beat NE (Bill) 41-17

    Marty 3 Bill 2

So what are people's thoughts on what Bill going to do to Marty to mess with his head this week? Is Bill going to put 8 guys in the box to take away the run and make Rivers make all the plays or play straight up and rely on the solid run defense?

BB will put together a D that will try to confuse and rush Rivers, forcing him to make mistakes.

    Disable Jersey

Marty's teams play the style of ball that Belichick teams have the most trouble with: smashmouth with quality tight ends. Because Belichick uses the 3-4, New England's front 3 is more important than the average line in these matchups, because the linebackers tend to be a bit more stout and a little slower than then norm, leaving them vulnerable to speed at either the running back or tight end positions. Therefore, if Seymour, Wilfork and Warren are getting bested, New England's in trouble. On the other hand, if the front three can hold their own, the Patriots will likely win the game because Rivers will probably make some rookie mistakes under pressure.

Marty career playoff record is 5-12 (.294). Has not won a playoff game since 1993.

BB carrer playoff record 11-2 (.846). Belichick led the Patriots to a playoff win over Jacksonville and became only the second NFL head coach to win 10 postseason games over a five-year span.

Belichick owns a career playoff record of 11-2, a mark that ranks second in NFL history behind only the legendary Vince Lombardi (9-1).

Over the last three seasons, Belichick's Patriots have won 80 percent of their games, compiling a 45-11 overall record. In 2005, New England won 11 games despite being forced to use 45 different starters, an NFL record for a division champion.

Belichick's recent accomplishments are the latest triumphs in a career during which he has helped produce five Super Bowl titles, six conference championships and 11 division titles since entering the NFL in 1975. Now in his 32nd season in the NFL, he has more years of NFL experience than any of the other 31 head coaches.

The Patriots enter the 2006 season having recorded a record of 19-5 (.792) against playoff teams since the beginning of the 2003 season.

Since 2001, Belichick's teams are 50-2 when leading at halftime and are 56-1 when leading after three quarters.

Belichick will dust off the Marshall Faulk gameplan from the 2001 SuperBowl. Stop Tomlinson and make the Charger's Pro Bowl QB beat 'em.

Agree. The Chargers will run into a wall this week. They haven't seen anything like the way the Pats are playing right now.

Let us recall that the basis for that gameplan was the defensive gameplan from NYG against Buffalo in the Super Bowl--shut down Thurman Thomas and make Jim Kelly beat 'em...

This is not true. In fact it is just the opposite. The Giants wanted the Bills to run the ball and BB actually told his players, "If Thomas goes over 100 yards, I guarantee that we win this game." Basically, they wanted to sucker the Bills into getting away from the passing game, which was where the Bills had the better matchup.

I really don't see how that gameplan has all that much to do with this coming game. For that matter, I don't see how the 2001 SB gameplan has that much to do with this game. The Pats played in a dime package almost the entire time in SB 36. If they do that this week they will get killed.

I agree about that. By "dusting off the old gameplan", I meant that the Pats will do everything they can do to limit the production of Tomlinson -- both as a runner and a receiver. I could very well see Belichick hitting him on every play. You're right. The gameplan probably won't include a lot of nickle defense.

I think the Pats will try to force the Chargers Pro Bowl QB to beat them -- in his first playoff start.
