And our young internal guys keep climbing to the top. I consider this great news.

I think that makes it more likely that O'Brien will be the OC in all but name.

I agree, same process as took place w/McDaniels.

Good for him Congrats......But from a fan perspective this could be kinda annoying if they do the same thing as with McDaniels they likely don't announce it which leaves us wondering for a while if there still could be an OC named.

I truly have to wonder why fans work themelves into a dither over something like this, especially knowing how BB operates. Let him shelter his young coaches as they make the transition - it's no different from what he did using Adalius to shelter Mayo on passing downs.

If they make it as obvious as they did with McDaniels we should figure it out pretty quickly.

This was overlooked during the season, and when Adalius went down the difference was significant.. BB does not throw lambs to the wolves..

Yup, JMD 2.0. As far as I'm concerned, this pretty much seals the deal, and there won't be an OC this year.

First off, I'm declaring here and now that we must call this guy BOB. It's catchy. Second of all, I can't help but wonder where he'll be the head coach 3-4 years from now.

Well, O'Brien isn't that and isn't homegrown by the Pats. They apparently were interested in him as a QBs coach after Weis' surgery in 2002, as were the Vikings for their OC position (source: Shane Donaldson, Patriots Football Weekly). But he then stayed in the college ranks and occassionally e-mailed Belichick until he was hired as an offensive assistant in 2007 (source: SMY?, ProJo, more recently).

Yes, but he's still had two seasons to develop within the system and unlike a young graduate assistant such as Josh, a young O'Brien brings the experience of being an ACC QB coach and OC to provide a fresh perspective to the BB/Weis offense.

Right, but I'm just saying that he's not a homegrown product with a direct lineage within the system (like Caserio, McDaniels, Mangini, Patricia, etc.)

I dunno. BOB's résumé looks pretty thin to me. :D

Just because he likes to hire from with in and just becuase he slowly handed it over the course of a year to McDaniels does not mean that Bill O'Brien being promoted to QB coach means the same thing. I fully admit it is more than likely but it is also possible that Mangurian could be promoted to OC or something of the like. With out an actual announcement though it will be a few weeks maybe a month or so before we know for sure this is the plan. Right now I expect it is but have to wonder........

    Disable Jersey

WEEI did just say that O'Brien would have some input on the offensive play calling, if I heard it correctly over the fax that was coming in.

I heard that too but is that the prevailing thought or is that coming from BB and/or the Pats.

Sheer genius those guys at EEI, I'd have never guessed an offensive assistant would have input on offensive play calling. :ugh:

Yes, but if you get really technical (yet exclude graduate assistant positions), only Caserio and McDaniels qualify as homegrown, both Mangini (OQC Baltimore, DQC NYJ) and Patricia (DL coach Amherst) had prior assistant coaching jobs.

Mangini started with BB in Cleveland. He stayed in bmore when bb was fired and the browns moved, then rejoined bb in new york.
Mangini is absolutely a BB protege with BB actually plucking him from their alma mater, Wesleyan.

I found the articles I was looking for on O'Brien:

Patriots assistant coach O'Brien relishes his days at Brown | New England Patriots | projo.com | The Providence Journal

As well as the old story about him on the Pats' radar in 2002:

For sure ... it takes a year for them to learn to talk with the playcard in front of their face.
