Many motorists don't know it, but it's likely that every time they get behind the wheel, there's a snitch along for the ride.

In the next few days, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to propose long-delayed regulations requiring auto manufacturers to include event data recorders β€” better known as "black boxes" β€” in all new cars and light trucks. But the agency is behind the curve. Automakers have been quietly tucking the devices, which automatically record the actions of drivers and the responses of their vehicles in a continuous information loop, into most new cars for years.

But...and it's a damn big BUTT too! No one will be allowed to use the information to sue anyone. Why, because it's illegal, that's why.

Besides, people like me will find out where the black boxes are and run a magnet over them.

I'll have to ask my buddy who owns a repair shop if they can be removed or destroyed.

    Another "fugg the gov't" issue.

Rhody, you gotta take matters into your own hands. If you don't like it, have it removed or destroyed. It's YOUR car, you can do whatever you want to it.

Why not try actually reading the article first, PR?

"Data collected by the recorders is increasingly showing up in lawsuits, criminal cases and high-profile accidents."

"There's no opt-out. It's extremely difficult for car owners to disable the recorders. Although some vehicle models have had recorders since the early 1990s, a federal requirement that automakers disclose their existence in owner's manuals didn't go into effect until three months ago."

Which is exactly why I can do anything I please with MY car...and when I buy a new one, I'll have my buddy "fix" it.

No one is going to track my driving habits....but feel free to let "them" track yours.

 Sure you are PR. In the first place i doubt your buddy would have the information to 'fix the car', second you'd void the warrenty, so if anything major happened to it you'd be up ***** creek.

I believe it. When i brought my one year old car in to have a timing chain replaced i said to the survice tech "i didn't beat of the car" he looked up from his computer (where he was reading data from my car key fob and said with a rye smile 'i know you don't) as if he really did know.

What surprises me here is the complacency of our members who seem to accept having their driving habits tracked. This is intrusive to all of us despite the fact no one has a right to track ANYTHING we do.

Gov't tracking cell phones & driving habits and maybe even internet habits...drones flying above us watching Americans.

Hebeill, why aren't you upset about any of this? This is...or was, the United States of America. Seems we're morphing into the old USSR.

I get where your coming from but we are big purchasers of the technology and so we kind of support what they are doing. The only way we fight it is to stop buying the products .. but we won't.

They aren't upset about it because Their Poopsie Whoopsie "Jug Ears" is the president, they don't want to offend him.

Liberals would be setting these cars on fire if Bush was still in there and if Romney had Won they would be setting themselves on fire and blowing up The Car Dealers.

Ok, then I'm wondering why auto manufacturers aren't refusing to put them in. What I believe is that our gov't is working with corp America on this. Because guess who benefits the most? Insurance companies, that's who!

I'd say if we actually polled every American who drives a car on this, they'd be dead against it.

So who here supports this action and who is against it?'

So Icy, are you saying you're ok with it?
