Obviously, sports betting is illegal. But if it were legal and if i participated in it, then I would have to bet the Steelers tonight.

The lines have moved towards Miami this week, obviously due mostly to Roethlisberger's appendectomy. ('Ectomy' is just not a nice ending to any word, is it?)

But when Miami could only squeak past our second string in Week 16, 2005, and when the Steelers managed to win the Superbowl despite more or less a no-show from Roethlisberger, the value is with the home team here.

    Jimmuh Manson as coach?..yes

Saban? Chambers will burn the corner early...Brown will make yardage on swing passes adn McMichael will just plain tear their safeties to Taylor is going to LIVE in the Steeler backfield the whole game

Before his organs burst the line was in favor of the steelers...most sites now have it's just a pick-um.

Also please do try and remember that the person who QB'd the dolphins last year is gone, and the 2 guys who threw passes in the super bowl are gone. (randle el is a redskin and Ben is on his back)

Given that it's in Pit. and the Steelers are the defending SB champs, I still have to go with the Steelers. Ben or no Ben, anyone that doesn't favor the defending SB champs at home their first game is crazy.

I am not going anywhere near that action, but I will have to say this:

If Miami can't beat Pitt when they are without Ben and Ward may not even play than they are pathetic. Pitt minus those two are an average team, if that good.

It is legal to bet on sports here, and I have an accumulator running on this week's schedule - with bets on five games - but have opted out of the Steelers/Dolphins game as too close to call. I had Steelers as a lock before Big Ben's op, but can too easily see how the Fins get a result to get involved in this game (but are too short odds to back).

So, OldEnglandPatriot, my advice to you would be to hang on to Sunday and find a different game to back.

Just covering my back ironwasp, wink wink. If I DID bet, I would have had a rather good 2005 season.

I agree this isn't a great betting game - few are on an opening weekend - but I do think that the Steelers represent a smidgeon of value, and I can't quite resist a bet on the curtain-raiser.

I'm probably clouded a little by wanting to see the extraordinary pre-season hype over the fish punctured a bit. Losing to a Roethlisbergerless Steelers should do it!

For what its worth, my advice to you is to steer clear of accumulators. But we all have our preferences.

Listen anyone who picks the Steelers to win tonight is dumb. They are an average to poor offense with a great D. The Dolphins have a good offense with a good defense, the only problem with the dolphins is there o line is crappy.

    Final Score

    Dolphins 20
    Steelers 13

Dumb? That's a bit uncalled for. I fully accept that the Dolphins have a fair chance of winning this game. But I think being able to back the defending champions at home, giving up more or less nothing, is good value.

I'm surprised though, that you think a 'good' offense that has a 'crappy' offensive line, is absolutely certain to prevail against a 'great' defense.

    Charlie Batch to Cedrick WIlson?

What? Willie Parker running the whole game, with a mix of Vernon Hayes. Please watch the game, they will have maybe 150 total yards.

Generally, I don't like accumulators much either, but in the NFL I've usually enjoyed reasonable success with them. This week's is not a great schedule for them, I don't think, but I've gone for: New England, Arizona, Chicago, Philadelphia and Seattle. Not great odds, but there you go.

Now you've got me thinking about whether or not I'm prepared to opt out of a punt on the opening match (notwithstanding earlier comments).

I would have to bet on the steelers for tonight. Defending champs at home. The crowd is gonna go crazy and the Pitt defense is still as good as before. It will be a low scoring event i think. Infact the score might be determined by a defensive touchdown.

Emotion will count for a lot tonight, you're right, and the D is good. If Daunte isn't yet on the same page as the rest of the offence, they might struggle. I'm nearly convinced.

I'll watch the game, thanks for the advice!

You don't think Parker is any good?

I think this game has less to do with the Steelers - we know what they'll try to do and that losing Roethlisberger is a handicap - than with how good the Dolphins really are going to be this season.

If they really are a playoff calibre team then they have a very good chance of winning this game. I remain to be convinced.

Well, as a Steeler fan I am staying away from this game. If fact I make it a rule never to bet on any games on opening day. Crazy stuff always seems to happen.
But I will take the over on the 150 yards if you want.
Damn with all the people burying the Steelers this year, even with Ben, some predicting they will miss the playoffs, I'm tempted to utter the word 'disrespect' if the Patriots hadn't already patented the word and I would.

As a dolphins fan, I'm with you. Should be something like 17-13 or 13-10 and I think it could go either way. Regardless, whichever team loses will be seen as a pretender even though I think both teams rank highly in the AFC.
  17. ClosingTime

ClosingTime On the Game Day Roster

With all due respect to your 'pretender' assumption, that's bs. The Steeelers are the Champs playing without their QB so if they lose this game they will not be seen as 'pretenders'. Miami on the other hand has yet to prove anything whatsoever on the field (don't give me that crap about 6-0 to close out the season against the worst teams in football). I get the feeling Miami, players too, are starting to buy into all the smoke being blown up their azzes.

Yes, the Steelers won't be playing with BR but it's not a QB driven system so let's not make it out as though this team isn't all about running the ball and defense. Plus, they're playing at home, complete with all the superbowl hoopla. I can't understand why you're so defensive. I'm only talking about perceptions here. Whether you like it or not, many analysts don't think the Steelers have a legitimate chance to repeat, much less win their division. Even without BR, if they lose tonight many will latch on to that as justification.

Just making a distinction between teams that have established themselves in prior years as being solid teams and those that have somehow risen to contender status by pundits (Miami, Arizona). I love that everyone is picking gainst the Steelers, a team that if their QB remained healthy all last year finishes 13-3 at worst and the year before went 15-1. Yup, a real flash in the pan. Not like those mighty Dolphins who won six straight games against the 5 worst teams in the league and squeaked out a win (more like it was handed to thenm) against the Pats JV squad.
Does no one see the eerily similar situations of the 2005 Bills and the 2006 Dolphins? The Bill's went 8-2 to close out the 2004 season and everyone was lauding them as contenders. But none of those 8 wins came against teams above .500 and one of the two losses came against the Steelers backups.
Coming into 2005 season the Bills were said to have a stifling defense, promising running game and a new gunsligner at the helm. The only weak spot was their OL.
    Sound familiar?
Now there are certainly some key differences, namely a veteran QB albeit one that turns balls over more than Andy Dick, but you guys gotta stop reading your own predictions. It's an awful shame to fall so far when you have't even begun the ascent.

I hate the Dolphins but they really look like they will win this. Though I really believe the Steelers losing with be better off for the Pats. However tonight, I root for the Steelers. I pray to god that the Steelers have a great pregame speach in the locker room and they come out and kick @ss. Their crowd will give them some motivation. However...
