This would likely be the perfect segment for PTI or ATH, but since they're off this week how's about Patsfans.com weigh in on this debate?

Both were just traded for essentially the same value, a 2nd & an additional late round draft pick. So who is the more valuable player currently?

    No Jersey Selected

Jason Taylor. He keeps his mouth shut for the most part and leaves it all on the field. Plus, with a premium being put on pass rushers this year, that makes him the more valuable commodity.

Good points, but I think age has to play a big factor as well. With the punishment Taylor takes at his position & knowing his heart may not be in football any more with the whole Dancing With the Stars episode I chose Shockey.

Your poll is timely. I was just going to log on and say I can't believe Jason Taylor & Jeremy Shockey were traded for the same compensation. Count me as a fan who has never seen what the big deal is with Shockey. He is a malcontent that has about two good plays a year to go with his three or four injuries. I think the Giants and the Redskins are the big winners in these two trades; the Giants for getting something pretty good for a player who has done nothing (except complain) for about three years now, and the Redskins for getting a pro bowl player for nothing. Even if Taylor only stays a year or two (and I bet you anything he stays longer if it is a good situation in Washington) he'll be worth the 2nd & 5th they gave up for him, ten fold. Now at least he'll be chasing Eli Manning & Tony Romo instead of Tom Brady.

Snyder is notorious for under valuing draft picks & IMO he continues that trend here. I don't think Miami was getting anything better than a 3rd round pick offered to them prior. Reportedly the deal was struck within just a few hours, so that tells me the Skins were pretty desperate.

I think the Saints price was just about right for Shockey. I think he could be a very explosive weapon for Brees. Yes he's had some problems with being a "team player" but those sort of reports always get blown up in NY. I think a change in scenary will do him some good.

Taylor will be just another BIG NAME who doesnt live up to his billing in DC. He is the better player, but his whole team quit last year-him included. I never liked Shockey, but his game might suit Brees and NO better. But they better use the Tuna's old system of FB/TE mixes rather than going downfield to max his utility.

    A couple of points here:

    • Peter King (yeah, I know) mentioned that before the draft the Saints offered the Gints a 2 and a 5 for Shockey. . . . a 2008 2 and a 2009 5. So the Giants actually lost a bit on this trade.
    • Don't both of these make getting Moss for a 4 and getting a 1 for Meion look one heck of a lot better? :D

who gets better value if Taylor retires next year?

I thought about Shockey's health and head but Taylor's potential for one year lost.

The guy who sacks the QB is always more valuable... assuming they can both play around their normal levels pre-trade.

Imagine if we had to pick one of these guys for us? A guy like Taylor gives you attack while being able to drop guys into coverage... technically.

Shockey gives you another, POTENTIALLY scary offensive threat.

I think, two years from now, the Saints look like the smart guys.

Taylor is one of the elites at his position and won DPOY a couple of years ago. Shockey is an OK player at a less important position and a pain in the ass. Taylor by a mile.

Shockey is by far the better value, simply because JT could be one-and-done and off to Hollywood. How soon we forget this is a guy who this offseason said in 10 years he hopes he is known more as an actor-entertainer than a football player. That is not a guy who will be willing to subject his 30-something year old body to a few extra years of pounding for the love of the game.

Say what you want about Shockey and his antics, the guy is a gamer and leaves 100% out on the field. I think with his ego knocked down a peg, he's going to be coming into an established offense with three star players (Brees, Bush, Colston) and won't be The Man, which he was straight out of the gate in NY.

If he is healthy, I think he'll be by far the better value. That Saints offense will be scary with a healthy Shockey streaking down the middle.

i'll say shockey. new envirement might help him shut up, and play. besides, there's the age factor, and taylor might only play for a year.

one thing is for sure, matt light must be smiling over the taylor trade:D

I would definately say Shockey. He has more years left and is one of the best TEs in the game. I am still floored that the Giants got rid of him. He has got a mouth but as far as I know he has never been in trouble, censured, suspended, what have you. For the organization to say, "yup, Coughlin can't whip him into shape, and it is not worth keeping him in order to give Eli a great target every game" is beyond comprehension. I'll bet there are some receivers on the Giants right now who are pretty angry about this.

I would completely agree with this if it were not for the potential one and done Taylor.

Shockey is the better value, hands down. Taylor is the better player, hands down. Shockey is a premier TE, a difference maker at his position, and only 27 years old. Taylor is also a premier player, but he's 33. If you asked who I'd rather have on my team, it'd be Taylor. However, in terms of value, it's the 27 year old pro bowl player hands down.
