The Administration, the entire Congress, and anyone else can go and come from Iraq virtually at will.

    Was this possible under Saddam??

    Didn't think so.

We knew this, but why does it need to become a political issue? Watson is a good guy on a USO tour, it happens every year. Am I missing something??

Remember what you say here because the next ratchet is coming, and it will start saying how all the Americans in Iraq are "baby killers, etc." Sure, Watson is a great guy, but remember it because the time will come when he will be smeared for this.

Guess you're too young for the Vietnam war. Either that or you're just in denial.

Do you and all the right wingers have patterned responses to what you perceive as the truth?? I was 1-A in the summer of '68, had all types of physicals, never called. In January of 1969 my lottery number was 313 or something like that.

I think you're still stuck in Vietnam, Fog. Unlike in that war, this time around people understand the troops aren't to blame and contempt is reserved for those in political power

*I had a slight heart attack reading the title, I thought Watson had enlisted. War is war, but Kyle Brady and David Thomas aren't gonna get it done without Watson.

So you were old to know. What were they saying about Vietnam vets when they came home: "baby-killers", "war-mongers", etc.

Am I right about that or not??

I'm not too young. What I remember is that when the troops came home from Vietnam, neither the left nor the right did anything for them. It was somewhat understandable from the left, who opposed our military machine. But, the behavior of the right was hypocritical and shameful. Let's hope when we leave Iraq, all Americans will remember that the soldiers did their best to served our country and should be accorded honor and rewards. Let's hope the Republicans don't block increased funding for VA hospitals and other services, even if it means, God forbid!, tax increases.

Not for nothing, but Al Franken has does this too, which is very comendable considering how anit-war/Bush he is. Anyone that goes deserves to be applauded.

No, your memory is either selective or hazy. The left "did" a lot for the returning Vietnam vets: they waited in airports to spit on them and call them baby-killers, literally. They held demonstrations all over America, burned the flag, giving speeches filled with vitriol toward all who served in the military. They did a real complete job of trashing anyone connected to serving in the military. The "did" a lot.

Guys stopped wearing their uniforms in public because of all the abuse they got. Having John Kerry throw *copies* of his medals away in public, while saying the soldiers and sailors were all maniacal murderers didn't help. It was a very miserable time to wear the U.S. uniform in America.

It was a nasty time in America, period. Remember black kids trying to enroll in white schools?

Don't blame people today for a past generation.

I don't create my impressions from isolated instances of extremism; otherwise I'd be talking about the four students killed and nine injured by the National Guard at Kent State and the crimes I witnessed first hand as a 12-year-old in New City, New York, where right wing thugs beat up students while the police watched.

    Never did.

I say what happened then is happening again. The usual suspects -- or their kids -- are carrying their tradition forward. Same rhetoric, same inflammatory theater, same-same.

How did you know they were right wing thugs as opposed to just thugs, there were a lot of pro war dems in NY in the old days and not many right wingers. Did they have a RW tatooed on their forehead?

I was accosted in the airport in Warwick when coming home, in uniform, on leave in 1973.

Sure sounds like you'd like it to be so just to have an excuse to spread your hatred around.

And like I said, your head is still stuck in that era. Nobody's been blaming the troops this time, people know that their anger should be directed to those with political power. There are a few extremists who blame our soldiers, but the mainstream left has not.
