On the one hand here's a very current AP story:

My Way News - CIA found militant links a day after Libya attack

On the other hand the White House is desperately trying to write Al-Qaeda out of the story before the debate.

Intel officials: No proof of advance plans for Benghazi consulate attack | TribLIVE

This is either brilliant or the nail in the coffin for Obama depending on which is true.

    Thoughts?

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

It reminds me of when the Bush administration didn't want to tie Al-Qaeda's name to the USS Cole attack during the course of the investigation in the summer of 2001. If a President doesn't want to look soft on national security, then he should try not being soft on national security?

The Cole attacked happened when Clinton was President, why would the Bush administration hide Al Queda involvement?

    Got a link for that?

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

It's fairly well known in counterterror circles, but a strange episode was reported by a senior FBI agent on the Cole investigation team during June 2001:

This approach by the Bush administration is more or less vetted by the 9/11 Commission which confirms that President Bush's speech on September 20, 2001 is the first time either Clinton or Bush acknowledged al-Qaeda as being responsible for the attack on the USS Cole (p. 337), despite mounting evidence linking al-Qaeda to the attack as early as November 2000 (p. 350). Rumsfeld believed that retaliating for the Cole was fruitless as the attack was stale (p. 202), all of which seems to point to Bush not really wanting to address the issue until 9/11 forced his hand.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

LOL... where the virtue of pragmatism is read by cons as "soft on national security." Got it. Thanks for being you.

you guys are awesome. I mean really, turning a non-story like this into political football.

I know you guys are still sore in the backside over that whole "got UBL" thing, but to pretend this president is soft on terror really is amusing.

    To some people:

    - shooting up a city intersection, killing dozens of civilians in broad daylight and stonewalling all accountability for your private Christian mercenaries is being "tough on terror."

    but,

    - showing tact with words for a few days while investigations continued? yeah, that's clearly being "soft on terror."

    ... Fail.

Ah well. I'm sure Mittens has all the answers. He's such a genius of nuance, he'll manage to pull a profit with his police actions abroad, surely. ... Yeah, let's send Xe back in there! They're private, and they don't have to deal with pesky "regulations" or answer questions. The Geneva Convention is for p*ss**s anyway.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

I do not have an issue with the Behghazi attack and the subsequent explanation, and have not had issues with other terrorist attacks under whomever..

These things are going to happen, not matter how many layers of security we have and how vigilant we are as a country.. as long as we act like imperialists in these nations, we will experience this type of violence, unfortunately.

We are viewed as an enemy, and seen as a country who continually views our way as the right way, no matter what the other country believes, the effort to impose our value system is flawed foreign policy.. might makes right.

As I understand a Consulate is supposed to exist as a resource for Americans in that country, promote good will and to issue visa's for foreigners who want to come tot he US, why did it exist in Benghazi????.. it seems more and more apparent, that this "consulate" was a CIA affair and had nothing to do with diplomacy on any level.

The problem I have are easy answers to compicated situations, that happen too quickly without taking the time to understand and factor in all of the dynamics..

There were conflicting reports on the ground, and conflicting and sometimes confused reports from the White House. The Obama's administration's response to Benghazi was anywhere near ideal. As early as 9/12 this was labeled as an act of terror, subsequent statements were usually properly cautious; the YouTube was significant; the attack was opportunistic, not preplanned; from what I read there is no obvious connection with al-Qaeda. It took about ten days for all this to shake out, but ten days isn't all that long to figure out what really happened during a violent and chaotic attack halfway around the world in a third world country.

What needs to happen now is The United States needs to pick up some small crappy little country and throw it against the wall, lob a bunch of cruise missiles and drones slaughter a bunch of people to show the world we mean business.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

Of course Clinton knew the USS Cole bombing was an Al Queda attack months earlier and did nothing.

USS Cole: 'Rock solid' evidence, no retaliation - US news - Security | NBC News

The idea that Bush was not in a position to react to an attack that was prior to his administration after the rancor of the election, not to mention the crash of the NASDAQ that started in 2/2000 (he inherited a country in recession), is not surprising.

Clinton chose to kick the can down the road. My point stands.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

Obama was stalling from calling Benghazi a terrorist attacked because he bears culpability in those 4 American deaths. The sooner "terrorist attack" hit the news wire, the sooner Benghazi becomes an issue threatening his reelection. Obama went on 60 Minutes and called Benghazi a " bump in the road."

If Hillary Clinton works for Obama (his words) than she was implementing his orders for not adding additional security on 911 after repeated requests. Blood is on Obamas hands, but he is willing to let Hillary Clinton take the rap for his bungled foreign policy.

Women are turning away from Obama because they see him as a coward unwilling to be a man and admit he is at fault.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

Fox news does not want you to know any of this, but here are the facts jack.. keep on believing the pablum are fed by Hannity and his crew.

During the September 23 edition of 60 Minutes, CBS' Steve Kroft asked Obama whether recent events in the Middle East have "given you any pause about your support for the governments that have come to power following the Arab Spring." Obama responded that "it was absolutely the right thing for us to do to align ourselves with democracy, universal rights" even though he was "pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because, you know, in a lot of those places, the one organizing principle has been Islam." [CBSNews.com, 9/23/12]

Sept. 12: Obama Said Of Benghazi: "No Acts Of Terror Will Ever Shake The Resolve Of This Great Nation."

Sept. 13: Obama Again Referred To The Benghazi Attack As An "Act Of Terror" In Colorado.

Sept. 13: In Nevada, Obama Said Of Benghazi: "No Act Of Terror Will Dim The Light" Of American Values

Benghazi will haunt Obama forever even if he is re-elected, another thing Benghazi did, Pant Suit Hillary will never live in The White House again she is weak and an embarrassment to the Feminist Movement, she Caved in and took the fall for a man, a very dishonest and flawed man and he let her do it, Obama is dishonorable, he should RESIGN when he is introduced at the next debate, he is just like NIXON.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

Those are completely misleading. In his response in the Rose Garden he was clearly using those words to describe the acts of a reactionary mob. He set up those remark discussing that they get no pass for their "act of terror" even though they felt we disrespected their religion. He was clearly talking about the movie base on the theme that continued over the next couple of weeks.

The criticism of the administration is that they weren't on the ball and failed to take seriously threats of a planned terror attack and calls for added security. When Obama said "acts of terror" and critics said "acts of terror" they were talking about two completely different things. If we're going to be honest we have to acknowledge that. You can have a statement of "fact" on one narrow level but when you try and attach it to a broader level then it loses factual integrity.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

How do you know what he was clearly saying??? The contention was that he did not label the event as a terrorist attack..

Spin it anyways you want, but the reality is that this was a consulate in name only, and common sense would dictate that it had noting to do with issuing visa's or being a resource for americans in Libya.. it was a CIA outpost.

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

I "know" because of the theme they wouldn't stray from for two weeks. I "know" because of the way he framed his "respect for religion" comments right before he said "acts of terror". The contention was that he did not acknowledge it as a planned terror attack and but he instead framed it as a spontaneous, violent, terror filled reaction to a movie. That is the difference.

If you are right about it only being a consulate and therefore it was improper to add more security, then why are democrats singing the "republicans are to blame for lack of security" song?

Re: Benghazi - A Tale of 2 Current Stories.

Thats the whole point! Nobody does because Obama was so vague.

Obama never denounced Benghazi as a terrorist attack no matter how you want to spin it. He went to the UN and mentioned that stupid movie 6 times.

Obama didnt. He called it an act of terror.

More lies and fantasies in your mind.

Stevens was working with the Libyans to set up a new government and improve life in Libya. Even the liberal rag NYT says so.

    Crap!

I thought this election was going to be about "ONE THING": THE ECONOMY!

Oh well. I guess those economic numbers aren't falling fast enough for that to matter anymore...
