It is HIS choice but how he came out about it and his non chalance about it irked me he could have handled it better.
It was downright arrogance. Almost seemed proud of the fact that he didn't wear one and didn't need to.

I've seen many accidents where people have DIED that would have probably walked away if they had a helmet...not to mention those that lived with terrible scars or injuries that a helmet would have prevented.
My uncle died on a donorcycle, WITH a helmet on, cops estimated going only 35 mph. My point is, if I'm paying a kid millions to be my franchise QB, helmet or no helmet, there's no way I let him ride. No friggin' way. And if the kid's dumb enough to ride without a helmet, I'm questioning whether he's got the smarts to be my franchise QB in the first place.

Thank God Brady drives a big MVP Escalade with 24" spreewells.

Latest word: he is listed as conscious and alert. (ESPN2)

Of course in criticizing Ben we shouldn't forget this

MSNBC reported that it was NOT life threatening...
I really hope he is OK...but helmets ARE needed!!! I have had two friends get killed on cycles..a LONG time ago..and both had helmets..and 3 dies..last weekend in NH on cycles... VERY dangerous!!

No details, except that he wasn't wearing a helmet. Police have closed off the bridge on which he was driving.
Holy crap. Clearly a dum bass. All Steelers hating aside, I hope he's o.k.

I guess all you can say is I hope he's OK and he finally learned his lesson the hard way without doing permanent damage. He's got some talent and some stones but also a stubborn quiet arrogance that has always been troublesome. And a quick excuse when things went wrong that never involved his playing or behaving poorly.

When Tommy was in Israel this spring with Kraft they offered to take him up in a fighter jet - he passed. Said it was a fascinating offer but one he'd let wait until after his football career. Bad things can happen no matter how careful you think you are being, but with a franchise and a fan base dependent on you and paying you millions - maybe as much as a hundred million over a 10-12 year career, taking undue risks is just selfish and immature.

You really can't have it all in life without risking it all. So most of us sacrifice something in the present to hopefully insure you have what matters in the future. Gen-X doesn't entirely believe that because they haven't lived long enough to realize just how unfair and unforgiving and difficult life can be. And they don't want to settle for less than having everything they want and having it in the present.

I do hope that he is all right. I've heard the same reports on the radio when I was out. Injuries not considered to be life threatning which is good news right now.

Quite a few years ago as I was walking out of my office, a kid on a cycle hit a car right in front of me. He was thrown from the bike and went head first into another car. He was wearing a helmet but never walked again.

Motorcycles are just plain dangerous. I told my daughter when she entered high school that I never wanted to see or hear of her getting on a motorcycle. I know a lot of people who are smart in many ways. But they own cycles and ride without helments - just stupid.

Here's a New England connection that might just sprout conspiracy theories from Squeeler fans:

The car, which has Maine license plates, was turning left onto the 10th Street Bridge from Second Avenue and Roethlisberger was driving straight on Second and apparently was not looking when he collided with the car, police said.

I caught the story on Sirrius during lunch. Sounded like accident was pretty bad, but not a life or death situation.

I agree with everyone else that it was damn stupid to be riding a motorcycle and even dumber to be doing it without a helmet.

As the guys on the radio were saying, it is one thing to act like your are industructible on the football field, but it is dumber then hell to take it with you out on the road.

The Update from PFT, read the last paragraph closely:

All parties remain tight-lipped regarding the condition of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is being treated at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh after being involved in a motorcycle accident at 11:37 a.m. on Monday.

Per WTAE-TV, Steelers chairman Dan Rooney is on his way to the hospital. Teammate Charlie Batch is already at the facility, but has declined to comment.

Team spokesman Dave Lockett told WTAE that he'll defer comment to a specialist, who is expected to address the media by 1:30 p.m.

The most ominous aspect of the story, in our view, is that the matter has been assigned to the homicide department of the Pittsburgh police, which happens whenever (as a police spokesman told WTAE) there's an accident involving "critical" injuries.

Heard on Pitts news.. that Ben is in surgery... Dr Larry Jones said he was in serious but stable condition...QB Batch was the first Steeler to be at the hospital to see him...

I wasn't in Pitt. and I can prove it. -:)

What a moron for not wearing a helmet. He'd better be able to return to the field, I don't want to see the Patriots lose the chance to smack him and his band of phony champs around on the field for the next decade and show what a fraud that last season was, or hear Steelers fans cry for the next decade about how they would have dominated the league if only their dumbass QB had worn a helmet.

I also read that they shut down that intersection and surrounding areas for investigation, also something that never happens unless it's serious.

Crap.

Hope the guy's ok... team rivalries take a big backseat when these things happen.
