Ian's Daily Blog - The term “In Bill We Trust” just took on a whole new meaning. The team announced on Friday that the Patriots will not have a defensive coordinator in 2010, with head coach Bill Belichick instead working more closely with the defense next season. “Titles are fine, nothing wrong with them,” Belichick said, “but the most important thing [...]

I have no problem with this. It's been when he's tried to be the defacto offensive coordinator we've had problems. Get a professional.

Belichick inow is the defacto GM, the HC, the DC and the OC. He makes all cruicial personal decisions and makes all key play calls.

Kinda figured the Pats weren't getting a new DC. I actually thought that Kraft was going to buy a mannequin, dress it up with Pats attire with a clip board in its hand, then hire a young kid to move it around every 5 minutes so it looks as if we have a DC. Probably would have been more effective than Pees.

Belichick clearly knows Brown from coaching against him in the Division, but he must have received a pretty good recommendation from Charlie as well. I can see this working out really well, if Brown and BB can work hand in glove. Though I do wonder whether this decision has anything to do with BB not being ready to bring someone in as DC over Pepper Johnson's objections, who, according to some reports, expected to get the job. Any thoughts?

He takes ultimate blame. I'm not a big fan of this, not at all.

An apparent defensive guru taking on the mantle of defensive coordinator once more not going to work? Interesting logic given Wade Phillips made it work.

BB will do fine as DC
Offense will be a ongoing train wreck if O'Brien calls the shots
There is no way BB can handle both sides of the ball on gameday

    This decision is a mistake
    Pure and simple

Not sure if it's a big deal. BB was DC in 2000. When RAC became available in 2001, he grabbed him.

I do find it somewhat interesting that they have not given the OC title to O'Brien yet.

If Josh was still here or they brought Charlie back I wouldn't have an issue with this but this begs the question what happens if the offense is like it was last season? The offense was just as ineffective and incapable of making adjustments that led to second half difficulties.

McDaniels was QB coach in 2004, OC-in-Training/QB in 2005, before being named OC in 2006. Billy O'Brien is now getting his second year as QB coach/OC-in-Training, so the development path is quite similar.

Is Pepper ready to be DC? Is Patricia? Brown has one year of DC experience at Notre Dame, is he ready for NFL DC? Looks to me as if BB is taking some time to put the polish on some younger men he's been grooming.

True. McD was in the Pats system longer than O'Brien however he was a OC before at the college level for many years. It's not like hes unfamilar with the role.

I just find it peculiar. Would love a penny for BBs thoughts...

Box, you are a very knowledgeable football fan. In your experience, have successful Offensive Coordinators been interns with a couple years of experience, or have they been very creative hired guns with systems honed and tested over the years?

I'm just a stoopid football fan myself, but I've been around a long ass time. I've never seen any team ever, that took interns out of small schools and tried to coach them up into offensive coordinators. It's always been creative specialists in demand by many teams to implement their systems and their creative play calling.

Let's say you can coach up interns. Who on this team is teaching them? Our head coach is decidedly defensively oriented, I don't care what anyone says.

And before anyone goes there, I'm not a Josh McDaniel fan, whether or not it was him calling the plays.

tom brady as the OC and BB as the DC i don't think this is a new thing i think it's been that way for the last few years.

look at what josh. did with out brady runing the show. he got a 150 yerds a game out of the same RB's and Oline we had this year. i think brady has been calling most of he's plays. im not saying the team is better with out. brady, i just don't think the OC should take all the blame. for not runing the ball.

and look at the defense it's been BB working with them on the side lines not pees. i don't rember BB working with the D that much when Romeo Crennel. was the DC it was Crennel. talking to the D on the side lines. this is a defense that has not had a whole lot of talent and creativity. for the last few years. and maybe pees has been fall guy for that. if BB is going to get all of the credit if the defense is good then he should get all of the blame. if the defense is bad.

i like BB as the DC. if they are not going to bring in someone to instill he's own take on BB's defense with some more blitzing and creativity. then the guy that knows how to run this system the best should be the DC and thats BB.
