    #24 Jersey

Tells all of his players that they have scored a combined 114 points the last 3 games.

The last time they did that was in 2002 and scored 115 points and went 3-0.

Belichick then goes on to ask if any of the players remember what happened after that 3rd game in 2002?

He tells them you lost the next 4 games 99 - 53.

So demoralizing yet it keeps these guys humble.

Just more of that "humble pie" as Rosey says.

I think BB strikes a very good balance of the adage that you are never as good it seems, and never as bad as it seems.
I think he does an INCREDIBLE job of picking up the mentality of the team in bad times (there are times for a kick in the @ss, and times to build people up that are down) and an even better job of letting them know they have not yet earned a single thing that hasnt happened.

Super Bowl champs are not crowned in September - BB knows that better than anyone else.

The Patriots have the WORST rated Red Zone Defense in the NFL too - allowing scores 100% of the time that a team makes it to the Red Zone.

Now one should keep in mind that they haven't let a lot of teams IN to the Red Zone, but still - that should be a wake up call too.

Yeah, that's a point of concern, like a lot of people are saying.

One thing I remember from some key games from several years ago was clamping down in the red zone. There were some pretty incredible plays down there, especially in the playoffs.

Hope they can rekindle some of that magic again this year...

Personally I believe they will improve their red zone defense. I am thinking that won't turn out to be a problem, it is just too soon to call that a major trend, IMO. I think it is the type of thing they can look at and address.

The title of this thread is so misleading and ridiculous. BB isn't trying to crush confidence and demoralize. He's just trying to keep things in perspective. You WANT your players to have confidence.

Brady said Belichick reminded the team of its 3-0 start in 2002, and how the Patriots scored 115 points in wins over the Steelers, Jets, and Chiefs before losing four straight. The message, according to Brady, is that even though the Patriots have scored 114 points in their first three games this year, "whatever we've done the past three weeks doesn't make a whole lot of difference going into this week."

I don't see how the Pats couldn't be focused on Cincy- they are a Midwest version of the Chargers- talk, talk, talk, and little walk.

This not only keeps them humble, it's a good motivational tool. By telling them they were at this exact same spot a few years back, then saying that they sucked an egg for four straight games and didn't make the playoffs... Well, that's just gotta scream "We're not gonna let that happen again!"

While the historical perspective adds a touch of reality to life in the NFL, there is a hitch in the story. The hitch is that their third win in 2002 was a disaster, giving up lots of yards on the ground to Priest Holmes, and then the blueprint for attacking them was known.

Bill will try to keep them focused but if you look at that defense in '02 it's no wonder why they then lost four straight.

It's all in the Front Seven, baby.

SSShhhhhh, don't remind the current Pats of this hole in BB's motivational story!

I think he got this from Parcells. Curtis Martin has a really good first game, and Parcells says he might be a "one game wonder." Team gets blown out, he says something like "we did some good things out there too."

Never too high -- there were some things we could do a lot better, but also not to low -- do not beat on his players or call them out in public (like Jim Mora -- "playoffs??!!").
