In a written statement, Patriots coach Bill Belichick had this to say about second-round pick Terrence Wheatley:

"Terrence Wheatley was a really good player for Colorado. He is smart. He has played multiple positions, both inside and outside. He returns kicks. I think he can contribute in a number of different spots. He is a very athletic guy and had a very productive career at Colorado."

He forgot to say, "And he is a midget. Were totally screwed when matching up against bigger recievers".

Boy, Belichick really knows how to stoke my fire. Very excited about Ellis Hobbs redux - right down to the wrist injury!

I know - right down to the 3 SB's, one of the top defenses in NFL history, etc

The "Hey hes a midget" crowd needs to check themselves before they wreck themselves. Asante, Hobbs - small guys but they can play. BB knows what hes doing. He looks to get smart, team oriented guys.

At first aghast, I was surprised to see Mayock had him rated as the 64th best player in the draft. To which I said, "oh well, never mind..."

Oh my God, you're right! He TOTALLY forgot to check the guys height! You better call him and remind him. Maybe we can rescind the pick

We won a Super Bowl with small CBs playing for half the season in 2004. Samuel, Gay, and Troy are not exactly giants.

The guy who covered Randy the best this year at least during the regular season was Lito Shepperd who is 5-10 and 194 lbs. Not exactly a large guy either and he seemed to play ok against the 6-4 210 lb Moss.

Personally, I think the whole size of CBs are overrated in a lot of cases. If you can get a physical small CB who can jam the WR at the line of scrimage, that is a great size equalizer.

Here's the deal with size. It's an advantage, but overrated as one. Skill can make up for it.

The place where it rears it's ugly head the most is on those fade routes to the corner of the endzone. In these cases, the receiver can usually get an extra six inches height on the defender, assuming both can jump equally high proportional to height.

That means the QB has to float the ball into a six inch window with perfect timing. If they can do that, they're probably going to do so regardless of the height disadvantage.

I'm not seeing a big deal here.

Sheppard had help over the top the entire game. He also was credited for "shutting down Owens in Dallas", when Owens was doubled the entire game. No cornerback can match up one on one with Owens or Moss. No one.

Sheppard had a lot of help over top from the safety. It was scheme coverage, not man on man.

Maybe he was lighting one of his cigerettes when he was supposed to look at the guys size?

I like the pick, he will surprise he has a very quick hitch when the ball is in the air, I have a feeling he will be special.

Great point. That's a pretty tight window that a QB has. I'll also add that the only way this height advantage becomes effective is if the WR is outstretched - a few shots from our safeties could make those big receivers regret extending for the jump ball.

I think this kid will be great if he doesn't get injured.

You people judging him based on his size sound retarded and probably read about football more than you actually watch it.

Nothing wrong with short speedy guys on the corners. No one had a problem with Samuel being 5-10. All we need now is one more corner tomorrow and he/hobbs/wheatley can be our "lolly pop kids" [end horrible joke]

Anyone here remember the battles between Pat Fischer and Harold Carmichael?

... of course the rules are completely different these days, which may explain why Belichick is going smaller/faster.

Terrence Wheatley is 5'9" with a 37 inch vertical. Champ Bailey is 5'11" with a 37 inch vertical. Thats a 2 inch window for a QB.

Re: BB Statement on Wheatley "He Is Smart" Typical Pats Pick :--)

Don't you wonder whether there was an audible groan when Auburn CB Patrick Lee was taken 2 picks before Wheatley? And maybe a 2nd groan when TE Martellus Bennet was taken just prior to Wheatley? We all know that BB loves TEs.

On the other hand....did you notice how quickly the Wheatley pick was made??? It seemed like only 2 mins went off the clock. Maybe he was BBs choice all along....

Re: BB Statement on Wheatley "He Is Smart" Typical Pats Pick :--)

I agree. In his highlight reel I was amazed by Wheatley's ability to break on the ball when it was in the air. Mind you, it was a highlight reel, but still it was impressive.

I also think this guy does fit into the Patriot's philosophy. In the BB era, the Pats have not been built at all on physically dominating players (except maybe AD). Year in and year out, the Pats appear to be a bit smaller and not as athletically gifted as many teams. But we win cause we have guys who know how to play football. This kid seems smart and knows how to break on the ball - and thats important.
