I came across this. He doesn't really say much except he wants someone who can play all 3 downs.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addresses the media during his press conference at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, November 09, 2009

Bill Belichick Press Conference - 12/09/2009

Q: What characteristics do you look for when drafting a 3-4 linebacker?

BB: I wouldn't be cautious at all. Anytime you like a player I'm happy to draft them. When you feel like a player's a good fit for your system and can do what you need them to do, based on whatever the other options are that you have, I am happy to take them. I don't care what position the guy plays. I think it would be wrong, and I've said this many times before, that it would be wrong to characterize our drafting philosophy as ‘we're going to take this or no we're not going to take that'. That's just not true. You can say that, but that's just not the way it is. We're going to take the player we feel is the best for our football team and that's the guy it's going to be, whatever position it is or isn't. But for inside linebackers, outside linebackers, depending on how you want to classify them, those guys need to be able to do the things that their job entails. For a player at any position, really, to be a productive player and to be picked probably in that area you would like for him to be able to play all the time. You'd like for him to be able to play on first down, second down and third down. It's hard to draft linebackers and players like that - defensive linemen, running backs, tight ends or whatever it is. It's hard to draft those players that don't contribute on every down. If they don't, then they really need to be exceptional in the area that they're in. You draft a guy in the first round that does one thing really well, but then you've got to go get somebody else to do something else, then that's a high price to pay, especially for that role, if you want to call it that. So that's kind of the battle you're fighting there. Find somebody that can play every down, like Jerod Mayo, play as well on first down, second down, third down, fourth down. You want to have him in the game in every situation. If you're comfortable with that then it's an easy pick.

BB was more specific when he discussed New Orleans DE Will Smith:

" 'He was certainly a guy we had a lot of interest in,' Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. 'He's a big guy who can run, rush the passer, pursue well, strong player at the point of attack, athletic, plays on his feet. He's got a group of skills, plays hard, been productive. I think he's been the player people thought he would be.' ... Thinking back to 2004, when Smith was coming out of Ohio State, Belichick didn't view him as an outside linebacker/defensive end type hybrid for the Patriots. Belichick compared the situation to Julius Peppers, saying that while he could probably play outside linebacker, a team wouldn't want to drop him into coverage because it would take him away from doing what he does best -- rushing the passer. Belichick was asked if it would be accurate that Smith was one of the few players he had in mind as a possibility for the Patriots in the first round of that 2004 draft. 'Yeah, sure,' he said. 'Any team I'm coaching, if you can get a good defensive lineman, you'd consider it. I don't care where it was, what the situation was, how many of them you might think you'd have. You really can't have too many of those guys if they're good.' "

Pats were high on Smith in '04 draft - Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

As far as LBs go, it sounds like if you can set the edge and play the run, rush the passer, block the passing lanes, pursue, and drop into coverage, you've got it made. We should have gotten a bunch of those kind of guys by now.

Good one Mayo

I do not disagree with BB, but I do want to point out this out.

Why not at least take a developmental guy with a few warts and try to develop the kid?

Why wait for the perfect player and then hope he falls to you in the draft.

Surely at least a few of the myriad 3-4 hybrid DE/OLBs from last year's draft are better for our team then Nikovich or a suspended Thomas??????????

Why not indeed? Somebody took a chance on developing Jared Allen, Elvis Dumervil, and James Harrison, among others. Their warts seem smaller now.

Exactly! Excellent point!

Why won't BB even take a chance on coaching up a guy?

The only guy i can remember him taking a chance on is TBC (a 7th rounder I think) and BB coached him up to be a pretty productive reserve/ST type guy.

Why nobody else?

It is bizarre draft behavior by BB to say the least.

Allen 4th round
Dumervil 4th round
Harrison undrafted

Shawn Crable 3rd round

Shawn Phillips 4th round
Rosie Colvin 4th round

I think there's value further down in the draft at this position it's just a question of going after guys without all the tools up front but making sure they have the motor that everybody on this list has.

Good point. BB needs to get off his horse and draft some linebackers, someone who can actually RUSH the passer.

What happened to Crable/Bable? He was unstoppableinski in collegio and now he's a bustaroo? How injured is he? I was excitedaroo about seeing him play.

BB has had his linebackers handed to him on a silver platter. Other

coaches have gotten them NFL ready. I will be pleasantly surprised

if he drafts a linebacker as one of the Patriot's first four 2010 draft picks.

I wonder sometimes about the success of Coach Woicek's legendary strength program. As far as I can tell, what held or is holding both Crable and Ron Brace back is that they just aren't strong enough. The whole plan with Crable was to bulk him up to the 260 range and build up his strength. He didn't look any different this summer than he did as a rookie.

A year ago we had 6'5" Shawn Crable, 6'5" Vince Redd, 6'5" Pierre Woods, and 6'5" Darrell Robertson on the roster or PS, so at least it looked like there was some effort to develop guys. Then Robertson was cut because of a "lack of room", Redd was cut because of attitude and off-field issues, Wood hasn't really developed beyond a STer and backup, and Crable has been on IR again. I find that somewhat confusing.

It's hard to "develop" LBs if we don't draft them. The development DE/OLB pass rushers taken in the BB era years include:

- Tully Banta Cain - 7th round, 2003
- Pierre Woods - UDFA, 2006
- Jerome Mincey - 6th round, 2006 (cut in training camp)
- Justin Rogers - 6th round, 2007 (cut in training camp)
- Shawn Crable - 3rd round, 2008 (IR for 2 years)
- Darrell Robertson - UDFA, 2008 (practice squad -> cut in 2009)
- Vince Redd - UDFA, 2008 (practice squad -> roster -> cut in 2009)

Not an awful lot of investment at the position. Only one guy picked earlier than the 6th round. I'm not including ILB types or 3-4 DEs here, which are different types of players.

The following is a list of guys who are draft eligible and who could potentially play DE/OLB for us, with the likely round that they will be picked (my estimate based on several outside draft rankings; juniors noted with an *):

- Derrick Morgan*, Georgia Tech. 6'4" 268#. 1st round pick, likely top 15.
- Carlos Dunlap*, Florida. 6'6" 270-270#. Probably 1st round pick, possibly top 15.
- Greg Hardy, Mississippi. 6'5" 265#. 1st/2nd round pick.
- Jason Pierre-Paul*, USF. 6'6" 265#. 1st/2nd round pick.
- Sergio Kindle, Texas. 6'4" 254#. 1st/2nd round pick.
- Jerry Hughes, Texas Tech. 6'3" 257#. 1st/2nd round pick.
- Everson Griffen*, USC. 6'3" 270+#. 1st/2nd round pick.
- Brandon Graham, Michigan. 6'2" 268#. 1st/2nd round pick.
- Eric Norwood, South Carolina. 6', 252#. Likely 2nd round pick.
- Greg Romeus*, Pittsburgh. 6'5" 265#. Likely 2nd round pick.
- Ricky Sapp, Clemson. 6'4" 248#. Likely 2nd round pick.
- Von Miller*, Texas A&M. 6'3" 240#. Likely 2nd round pick.
- Jeremy Beal*, Oklahoma. 6'3" 260#. Likely 2nd round pick.
- Austen Lane, Murray State. 6'6" 260#. 2nd/3rd round pick.
- Jermaine Cunningham, Florida. 6'3" 250#. Likely 3rd round pick.
- Brandon Lang, Troy. 6'4", 250#. 3rd/4th round pick.
- Jason Worilds, Virginia Tech. 6'2" 252#. 3rd/4th round pick.
- George Selvie, USF. 6'4" 245#. 3rd/4th round pick.
- Willie Young, North Carolina. 6'4" 250#. 3rd/4th round pick.
- O'Brien Schofield, Wisconsin. 6'2" 248#. 3rd/4th round pick.
- Lindsey Witten, Connecticut. 6'4" 258#. 4th/5th round pick.

That's 21 guys between the 1st and 4th/5th rounds. I'm not making an argument for any of them in particular, but you'd think that BB might just possibly be able to find one or two who have enough to pique his interest and justify a shot. If he doesn't want to spend a 1st or 2nd round pick then there are still plenty of guys who are worth a shot in the 3rd/4th rounds.

CAMPUS AGILITY TESTS
4.58 in the 40-yard dash…1.51 10-yard dash…2.61 20-yard dash…4.07 20-yard shuttle…11.43 60-yard shuttle…6.70 three-cone drill…35-inch vertical jump…9'11"broad jump… Bench pressed 225 pounds 24 times.

Also ran a 4.65 40 this past summer. Aggressive, like DeMarcus Ware and Peppers. Likes to bull rush. Needs to fine tune his moves.

Seneschal2 posted the above data regarding Austen Lane in a separate thread. I'm not sure where the data are from, but, if true, he sounds like an almost perfect BB 3-4 OLB:

- 6'6" 260#
- 4.6 speed
- Terrific burst and agility, with a 10 yard of 1.51, 20 yard shuttle of 4.07, and 3-cone of 6.70. Those numbers compare favorable with DeMarcus Ware's 2005 combine numbers (4.65, 4.07 20 yard shuttle, 6.83 3-cone).
- Strong against the run - opponents averaged 0.41 YPC running at him on 29 runs in 2009 for 12 yards, including 6 stops at the LOS.
- Good against the pass - opponents completed just 1 of 14 passes into his area in 2009 for -3 yards.

He sounds like the total package. Problem is, he's done it all against lesser competition. But that doesn't mean he can't do it in the NFL, especially if those numbers hold up. He certainly deserves close scrutiny as a potential DE/OLB prospect in the 2nd/3rd round. I'd love to pair him with someone like Greg Hardy or Greg Romeus at OLB, and maybe bring in a veteran FA like Aaron Kampman to school them and provide leadership.

I'm really anxious to see what type of DE/OLBs Belichick takes in this draft. There's pretty much every single type of pass rusher to choose from this time. BB has to see at least one guy he likes right? Unless he's waiting for the DeMarcus Ware clones Robert Quinn and Aldon Smith who are unbelievable prospects, far better than anyone in this or last year's draft.

I'm really bummed about Crable getting inured. He was a force in college and I was thrilled when we picked him up. Hopefully (please) he can make it to the regular season and show us what he can do.

BB talks quite a bit about DE's in today's (Tuesday) audio press conference (for Houston game), with indications of what he is looking for,,,,which seemingly would apply to OLBs.

And a Connor Barwin mention for those interested.

The DE part starts near end,,,

I think he knows the next step in the evolution of his defense is to get a few pass rushers and resign Wilfork.

The player has to buy into the program. I would put the challenge on Crable's effort, not whether it's a good program or not. I believe his track record speaks for itself. If Crable can't improve his conditioning/strength, it's all on him. Not the guy telling him how to do it.

I can't take another off season of strength and setting the edge talk. If someone bumps into BB at the store please escort him immediately to someone like Box or Mayo's house so they can talk LB philosophy for a couple of hours. I feel lately BB has forgotten how to draft for the outside position. Hopefully McKenzie or lol Crable with exonerate him.

This board has given him several good player options over the years and he still refuses to read. {he needs too} The list goes on and on of members here who struck gold with their 1st through 3rd round assessments of OLB position.

Do you have a link?

I still think that we blew it on Barwin. I think he would be getting considerable playing time by now, and would have been a starter by next year.

Schofield kid from Wisconsin looked pretty good last night against Miami. Miami returned opening kick for a td and were totally shut down for 58 minutes. They scored a td with 1 min left to cut it to 20-14. I'd like to draft 2 olb's this year. As others have mentioned, probably not going to help us in 2010. But, we need them from 2011 on. Sign me up for B.Graham in Round 1 if he runs well. And, someone like Schofield with a late 2nd rounder.
