    The Myth of 2016 - Barrons.com

Barrons points out methodological issues with the "trust fund exhaustion by 2016" projection; this author says harmonizing the mean retirement age w/actual dept. of Treasury estimates puts you at 2018, and that's not accounting for the effect of the 08 meltdown. Eeenteresting.

Apparently Barrons needs one of these, which clearly points out that it doesn't matter if SS makes it until 2018...we're all going to be gone by 2016, so WTF!

Just kidding, we'll get ours but it's still a crappy system.

Of course i hav eheard of the Myan calender running out in 2012 and the end of the world. But what i didn't know until lst week was the it had to do with another planet hitting the earth. I learned of the planet and it being a hoax last week. I think it was either in Live Science or Scientific American that i read an astronomer was recieving a lot of e-mails about this, and repling that there was no planet, that it was all a hoax that took on a life of its own.

So, where's the "great Mayan nation" today?? Absorbed by a higher culture. Or at least it WAS a more advanced culture until some people decided that God was not important any more. Bad, bad move. To be regretted. There's still hope but only for those who get their heads on straight and get with the program: God is the very First Scientist.

    Peace, out.

Boy way to go, proclaiming that the Mayans no longer have an empire! Woo hoo!

    All hijacking aside...

I find it interesting that so many are so concerned (and we should be) about social security's exhaustion -- but so few are really interested in how we project when this will occur.

Broad brush strokes are fine, for social security: we know it's coming, and we know it needs reform. But I do find it interesting that countervailing trends are given short shrift. Not as sexy, I suppose.

Do we have to address the problem, whether it's '16 or '18, or (as I think in my amateur opinion is likely), some slightly later date?

    Oh yeah.

Should we actually understand the numbers involved?

    Yeah again.

So Mayans and Christians can have it out next door, if everybody's cool with that.

Or is the extent of our analytical ability the screaming of epithets against people with different sex lives than ours?
