Yep, no argument here ..... the Pats can't draft/coachup DB's for some reason. If they were (even somewhat) competent doing so, this team would likely have another SB or two to their credit.

I know this person wrote that as a jest but I don't know how many people who have been watching this team believe that. I know I am spoiled but usually when the pats win I am in a good mood the next day. Not today. Pats were lucky to win and there is really not much to feel good about after that win.

Yeah, BB the coach is great. BB the GM is not at drafting corners and safties. His drafts picks in the secondary are just producing busts after busts.

This is the big ouch here. Instead of grilling Belichick about whether or not he hates the Jets, maybe guys like Breer should grill him on football questions ... like on this subject. Would take some bawls, but that's what they're paid for. And I don't mean be shrill about -- I mean be clear, informed, firm and fair. Too much to ask? Of course.

What about the 2nd part of that article? Did Cunningham indeed get a way with a Palmer/Brady-rule violation?

I looked at the linked replay and it's certainly true that after going down, Cunningham crawled forward and grabbed Sanchez's ankle and calf.

    ...and so is your article.

    If you say so.

Oh, they didn't cover, I get it. Oh well, losing a division game or not covering in one was devastating in previous years.

Did you also write about how the team wasn't very good after 3 losses last year? After they lost to the Bills, for instance?

Chandler Jones, Jerod Mayo, Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham, D'onte Hightower, Kyle Love, Brandon Spikes -- remains to be seen --> Devin McCourty, Tavon Wilson, Alfonzo Dennard, Brandon Deadrick, Myron Pryor.

Have they had busts? Yes, many. But I count 12 players up above.

Devin McCourty and Tavon Wilson: BUSTS

Drafting is an exact science: think about it, if a QB picked in the first round can't play at an acceptable level, how likely is it that a 6th rounder will do much better?

Uh-huh. How is Mark Anderson doing now? Ninkovich is clutch and is 10x the player Anderson is. Jones and Ninkovich can set the edge too!

Except Cunningham never crawled. Not at all. He was knocked down and pushed and landed at Sanchez's feet. He never crawled once. Barnwell is making stuff up.

Most Patriots fans are smart enough to realize the rule was instituted a year and a half prior to Pollard diving at Brady's knees. It was put in when Carson Palmer was taken out by the Steelers in the playoffs 2 seasons before.

This writer's imagination is working overtime.

A lot of this is going around lately. This morning I heard people on WEEI say the Patriots were lucky not to lose to the Ravens in the playoffs last year because the kicker blew the game-winning kick.

the failure to not even make a few right picks (and while not all of them have been wrong, none of them are right as of this moment) not only keeps that unit in shambles, but it prevents the team from diverting resources to develop other positions

Yep. I think maybe to " coach up ", they need someone coachable.

There are some good coaches on this team, and I'm sure they spend a lot of time schooling these players, but after five years of poor results, I think that maybe it's the scouting department that's the problem.

I'm not sure either of us is well positioned to make a proper deduction on why 7, 1st or 2nd round selections spent on DB's has not worked out but, both of us know that something is wrong.

The only thing i agree with is the lack of drafting DB's that pan out.

No doubt the personnel are substandard and this is the major part of the problem. Unfortunately, it is also unfixable in the short term so if we are to see improvement this year, we have to look elsewhere. When even the better players such as Chung and McCourty regress, it is difficult to exclude the possibility that the coaches cannot do a better job of adapting their schemes to better suit the capabilities of the players. And given the difficulties BB has in finding and coaching DBs and WRs, when he does find a good fit perhaps he needs to consider more carefully the difficulty of replacing a player (Milloy, Samuel, Law, Gaffney, Branch...). Will be interesting to see how he handles Welker but hte signs are not encouraging.

I'm not sure where you're getting 7 from. It's obviously too early to count McCourty, Wilson or Dowling out, so I'm finding no more than 4, and that's if you consider Meriweather a failure despite 2 Pro Bowl seasons in 4 years.

I think Bill should stop being cute and draft a consensus first rounder for DB rather than someone he thinks is good but nobody else does.

Bill does this well with other positions... Except DB.

    Barnwell said 7 busts.

Then he said no Patriot DB taken in the first 2 rounds has panned out in the last 5 years.

The only DB taken in the first round has been McCourty, and he went exactly where the mock drafts had him going. Supposedly, the Jets were going to take him next rather than Kyle Wilson. Would you trade McCourty for Kyle Wilson today?

Ok, I missed the Barnwell number. So the problem is that Barnwell either doesn't know what the hell he's talking about or is at least jumping the gun on players.

    Seems par for the course.

We would much rather have you as the GM.

Sucks going to 5 super bowls in 10 years and either winning or tying for the division every year. Man does this team suck, and so does Belichick, it's a shame some fantasy fan who lives in mommy's basement and spends 800 hours a year waiting for WEEI to get to their incredibly important take can't take over and run this crappy team.

Hope things are going good in Fall River, have a good day.
