Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan: Approval Ratings, Economy Link First Two Years - ABC News

    ...

placed together on a graph the two men's approval ratings snake and jut downwards like a helix, from almost identical starting points, with approval in the high 60s, down to about 50 percent in the first year and a half. (Spoiler Alert: Reagan's popularity continued down to a low of 42 percent and Republicans lost 26 seats in the House of Representatives after two years of the Reagan presidency. Many political experts predict even stiffer losses for Democrats in November.)

"It is absolutely uncanny. A relationship like this is remarkable," said Gary Langer, ABC's polling director, who has been noting the popularity comparison between the two men since Obama's inauguration. Read Langer's analysis here and here....

    wait wait wait...

according to almost every republican I know...The entire nation LOVED Reagan, he was at either 90 or 99% approval throughout most of his 30 years as president. After he built the saturn 5 rocket with mind power and launched the apollo program by harnesing the energy of his morning pushups. Also, he single handedly defeated comunism.

Reagan has become 6,000x greater in death as he was in life. Maybe its because MOST of his fans are aging geriatrics, holding onto a 'simpler' time called the 1950s.

    and are losing their minds.

    A few issues here.

Reagan had to deal with a hostile centralized media, Obama has dealt with a supportive MSM and a mixed alt media.

Reagan had to deal with a Dem H of Reps, Obama's had total control of congress.

Most importantly Obama has created new entitlements when our demographics for dealing with entitlement programs is much worse that what we had during the 80's.

Last Obama policies will destroy jobs, the will prop up the public sector by ravaging the private sector, the tax increases

(expiration of the Bush tax cuts, the cap and trade if passed the increases in health insurance costs as a result of Obamacare and IMO a recommendation, by his deficit commission, that we institute a VAT tax) the damage will be done by the lame duck congress.

we will see next year will cripple the economy and raise unemployment.

Reagan tamed inflation, lowered interest rates and grew the # of jobs Obama is the anthesis of all of this.

    hahahah...classic!

Reagan also turned water into wine, Invented the KISS Make-up, Cancelled ALF, found out what Victoria's Secret was and didnt tell a sole, put the "bop' in the 'bop-shoo-bop', leveraged teh 'wham' in the 'wham-a-lam-a-ding-dong', hid the smurf village, and led teh US mens hockey team to gold in Lake Placid.

I think you're confusing Ronald Reagan with John F Kennedy. Reagan was popular when he left office and became more beloved as time passed.

Lets see what Obama has had to deal with....of the top of my head.

Close to a world wide economic collapse.

    Two wars

A deficit of 4 trillion dollars when he took office

A republican party that has tried from day one to thwart his every move by saying "NO"

I'm sure others can add to this list.

I actually think he hasn't done to bad considering all that hes had to deal with.

What makes you say that? Which of those problems has he actually solved?

Fox news, radio, the decline of the newspapers all serve the right wing. Besides, except maybe for CBS, the media was not particularly hostile to Reagan. He was called the teflon president.

I agree there. Reagan accomplished far less than Obama because the Democrats stood in his way. But, they did give him his deficits.

Yes, Republican policies did set our country back and we have more peopled struggling today than we did prior to Reagan.

You can hope, but so far Obama's policies are improving the economy at a faster rate than did Reagan's policies.

Reagan, through tax cuts and spending, pumped an extra $500 billion into the economy. Under Obama so far interest rates are lower and the economy is improving faster than under Reagan. We'll know if you're right in a couple years.

Reagan got a pass, if he was prez in this day and age would be minimally facing impeachment, perhaps tar and feathering.. if he was alive in this day and age with all of the scrutiny of the press and blogs, he would be blown out of the water.. Reagan is not a god as many think he was..

He was a great speaker, at best a grade "B" actor...

    1. Negotiating with Iran over the release of the hostages, commencing in the July before election...
    2. Iran Contra Affair, this alone in this day of instant journalism would have brought up the "I" word...
    3. Failing to retaliate against Hesbollah, after they blew up a marine barracks killing 241 marines.. some say that led to emboldening them as an organization.
    4. The mirage of tax cuts, they increased..

For better or worse, Barack Obama has accomplished more than any president since LBJ and perhaps even since FDR...

...in the first half of his first term in office. Pretty remarkable, really.
