File under ridiculousness of the justice system, lord knows we do not want to affect and infect the judicial system... wonder if George will come to his aid.

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/4964652.html

SAN FRANCISCO — An attorney who admitted leaking the grand jury testimony of Barry Bonds and other athletes was sentenced Thursday to 2 1/2 years in prison, by far the harshest penalty yet from the federal steroids investigation.

Troy Ellerman, 44, pleaded guilty in February to allowing a San Francisco Chronicle reporter to view transcripts of testimony by Bonds, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield and other athletes embroiled in the probe. He initially blamed federal investigators for the leak.

U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White approved Ellerman's latest deal with prosecutors about a month after rejecting a plea agreement calling for a prison term of 15-24 months. White harshly criticized that sentence as too lenient.

Ellerman's new deal called for up to two years, nine months in prison. White opted for a shorter sentence but required Ellerman to give 10 speeches on conduct to law students.

"This affected, and infected, every aspect of the judicial system," White said.

    #15 Jersey

In an act of precedence, Bush should commute his sentence. All the lawyer did was leak confidential information concerning a steroid probe. Compare that to Scooter Libby, who obstructed justice under oath in a Federal Investigation in a case concerning a CIA agent. Oh I know, Clinton didn't do time either.

Either that or pony up a couple of hundred thousand and give it to....nevermind

This guy should go to jail, just like anyone who breaks laws like these should. Unfortunately, we live in a country where people, erm politicians and the politically connected, don't have to. It's truly funny to see people trying to make Libby a one sided issue (remember, I think he should be in jail). To do so is to ignore the factual, and historical reality of the politics in this country. What people need to understand is that this incident, Libby, is only going to make the pardons/commutations of the next office holder easier to justify. Why? Cuz the guy before him did so for his guys, and the guy before him did so, and so on, and so on....

Until americans decide to band together to voice their objections to these practices, it won't stop. As long as one sheep points to the sins of the other as justification of egregious acts, they will continue to take place. All the while the American taxpayer suffers.

It is if you are the president, work for one, or are willing to fork over a couple hundred grand for his services.

If you people can put aside your Bush hatred for the time being (not sure what Bush has to do with this ruling), you should see that it is a fair decision. Grand jury testimony is supposed to remain 100% sealed and confidential. That is part of the system of the United States. Violating the sanctity of the grand jury is a pretty serious offense, and deserves punishment.

As is leaking the name of an CIA agent and then lying about it.. the justice system is probably the most unequal system in the US.

No one was charged with leaking Plame's name, because she wasn't covered. He was convicted of having different memories of conversations than Tim Russert and another reporter who had to modify their own contradictory testimony.

he should have just said he didn't specifically remember what was said in those conversations a couple of years earlier.

here we go again, whereby you trot into a thread, squawk your incorrect propaganda about your war-architect heroes, and hope it sticks... please don't change the specifics of the trial to whatever pleases you... A bush-appointed judge sentenced him to 30 months, and said he was "perplexed" by the commutation.... Libby was convicted of lying to a grand jury, as well as obstructing justice... He threw sand in the eyes of investigators...

She WAS covert, no matter how many times you wanna shout with the 15% who blindly insist otherwise... She WAS purposely outed to select sympathetic journalists by several loyal inner-circle Bushies... it was MORE than just Russert and "another reporter" who contradicted Libby's lies, it was more like 6 or 7 people who took the stand... so give it a rest...

your boy is a criminal, his masters kept him from showering with other men for 2 years, your heroes lied about the Iraq threat, your occupation is a disaster, your president is blocking an investigation into the stolen 2004 election, and you're plugging hole after hole in a sinking ship...

    but, good luck with that...

Somehow revisionist history becomes facts fast:

    http://uspolitics.about.com/od/theplamegame/a/libby_facts.htm?p=1

    2. Libby Was Charged, And Found Guilty, Of Lying
Scooter Libby was not charged with criminally leaking Valerie Plame's name to the press (although evidence presented at the trial shows that he did leak her identity to reporters). Libby was charged with -- and convicted of -- lying under oath and obstruction of justice.

It remains unclear if Libby knew that Plame was a covert CIA agent at the time he talked about her with reporters -- which was at the direction of Vice President Cheney, according to his defense.

Revisionist how? You reference states Libby wasn't charged for leaking, it is also fact that Armitage and Rove also talked about Plame to the press, neither of thme were charges for talking about her. Another fact when Novak called CIA to confirm her employment there the Public Information Officer confirmed her employmnet there.

You guy are never gonna give up the wet dream of the nefarious plot to 'out' Plame as if she were a real undercover agent overseas rather than a hack with an agenda and pal of Mary McCarthy. Who sent her dishonest husband out to do a hit job on the administration for the democrats. Remember Joe claiming Cheney asked for him to go when it turned out Val had set the gig up before Cheney had ever been breifed on the allegations concerning Niger's yellowcake? Wilson and Plame should be the ones going to jail.

this has been covered.... and you continue to bloviate an alternate reality... no surprise, really...

the OVP asked the CIA to look deeper into the Niger charge... thus, it WAS "at the behest" of the vice president, though he didn't request Joe Wilson specifically... She was a real undercover agent working overseas, ironically in nonproliferation, the very issue your president promised to protect the american people from...

oh yeah, and you're a documented liar... thus, by your Michael Moore logic, why is anyone listening to you?

As evidence introduced into the Libby trial showed. Wilson was put forth by wifey BEFORE Cheney was even briefed. That is the FACT, you denials and screaming notwithstanding. The links to the specific documents establishing the time have been posted a number of times.
