A major headache here in Louisiana is the outrageous rates people have to pay for the bare minimum liability coverage on their auto. A lot of it can be attributed ot the high rate of uninsured, as well as the fact that these seem to be the worst drivers in the country (IMHO).

The first part is what bothers me the most. I suggest this:

Add an additional $.05 to each gallon, which would go into a State controlled fund, that would be used to provide every motorist that buys gas basic liability coverage. Insurance is paid at the pump.

Addtional coverage (higher liability, theft/collision/fire, commercial) would still be purchased privately. This would merely ensure that an accident never involves an uninsured vehicle.

I apprve of anything that takes money out of Insurance company hands. I know there's bound to be somebody complaining about expanding government powers and I'm a little concerned about that; but with this system I could vote out the admins if I didn't like how they ran it. I can't vote against the executive board of Allstate or Nationwide.

I'm not much of a tax guy but that's actually a pretty good idea. Maybe it would be better to do it as a registration fee so that the trucking business doesn't take an additional hit with gas prices but either way it would eliminate uninsured drivers.

I imagine this would be insensitive to someone, though.

Insurance is a socialist concept where, in effect, we are all compelled to pool our money for the common good. Perhaps we should do away with mandatory auto insurance, and if you're hit by an uninsured motorist, too bad.

You can buy insurance that protects you from the scores of illegal immigrants riding around w/o insurance. I'd advise it, depending upon where you live. Canterbridigia would be a wise plave to have it. That being said, I favor the idea of the tax (Gak! Cough!) suggested that would have everyone 'contribute' to a universal motorist basic coverage. Not a bad idea.

When I was in San Antonio my auto insurance for one car was about $800 every six months. When I moved to Virginia my auto insurance rate dropped to under $400 dollars every six months, same car and same insurance company. The reason my insurance company told me was that around 60% of the accidents in San Antonio involved uninsured motorists. Along with a high stolen vehicle rate. Virginia has a decent defense against uninsured motorists. The insurance company by law has to inform the DMV if your insurance is cancelled or terminated for failure to pay and your registration immediately becomes invalid, so if a cop pulls you over and your insurance is not up to par he will know it as soon as he runs your plate. This eliminates the person who buys his insurance gets a card saying he is good until such and such date and then cancells it, the cop would have no idea the card was invalid when the driver provides him the card. It also helps people like me out because I always forget to put my insurance card in my car and because of this law Virginia residents are not legally required to carry proof of insurance with them at all times.

I am not sure I support the gas idea because of reasons stated prior in this thread but some sort of system like that could be interesting.

Did I actually say that ? Puke. I have my own insurance problems living in CA but I don't want to subsidize other people unless they want to subsidize my earthquake insurance.
