Count me as one of those guys who swallowed the media's 'story' last year of the "Get Paid" tatoo and its not-so-subtle message to the Pats. My opinion of AS went down immediately last year when I heard about it. I remember thinking that this is ridiculous and embarassing that he has done this in the open.

Sorry AS. Should have known better than to rely on the media.

I am sure there are other Pats fans who were very well aware of the true story, this is more to those guillable fans like me who used to believe everything reported.

Old news to this board. :D

What a terrible tattoo. I liked it better when it was Get Paid.

That's why I mentioned: "I am sure there are other Pats fans who were very well aware of the true story, this is more to those guillable fans like me who used to believe everything reported". :)

Asante Samuel said:
“Basically, it was a song by Gnarls Barkley when he was with Goodie Mob.”
Ummm. . . . it was a what by whom when he was with which??!!!

Attention Reiss

The credibility of reporters has taken a big hit this year for me. Most disappointing. Also note that the player did nothing to crrect it until now. Maybe that is because there is so much garbage written that it is not worth their time correcting it all. JM and the Globe should issue an erratum and apology.

That's the earliest mention I can find, so I'd hang it tentatively around MacMullen's neck. Though it was repeated in print by others, including Reiss.

Not only was that a complete factual misrepresentation (what IS the duty of the press anyway?), but the atmosphere surrounding that hatchet job was thick.

Remember, the interview had taken place two weeks earlier and held back by either MacMullen or the Globe until the morning of the first playoff game.

It then has a completely slanted take on the Samuel situation including (as we NOW learn) a MANUFACTURED LIE about something so tangible as a tatoo.

Jackie MacMullan is a real talent and has great observations, but she has slid in the past year or two into the Woody paige/Skip Bayless/Dan Shaughnessy school of tabloid journalism for ratings. Quite a shame, because she used to be informative and thought provoking.

Jackie Mac has some 'splainin' to do to the New England public that reads her work.

Took long enough to get this cleared up. (again)

The real question is why get a phrase/song title tattooed on you several years after it's relevant/recorded?

Here are the lyrics, and "Gnarls Barkley" didn't rap them. Cee-Lo, one half of Gnarls Barkley, did, along with the rest of the Goodie Mob and Outkast's Big Boi.

Goodie Mob "Get Rich To This"

We peel out sideways (get rich to this)
We do a hundred on the highways (get rich to this)
Thank God for Friday's (get rich to this)
Hey hey hey hey!! (get rich to this)
We peel out sideways (get rich to this)
We do a hundred on the highways (get rich to this)
Thank God for Friday's (get rich to this)
Say say say say!! (get rich to this)

Is there really anyone left who thinks he is purely a product of the system?

The kid is good and is going to make a lot of coin in the off-season.

I'm certain she genuinely thought it said "Get Paid" -- there's no way you center a whole feature article around a claim you know can be easily proven false! It was just a huge, inexplicable, shamefully sloppy mistake. I agree that she and/or the paper absolutely should have issued an apology the minute the truth became clear.

What a terrible tattoo. I liked it better when it was Get Paid.

Yeah, it's not exactly a gold star for young Mr. Samuel to be so deeply moved by lines like...

Might step outside and might catch me a floozie
Some loozy double-stitched hoochie
Y'all chase records while we chase coochie

...that he had to immortalize them on his body. But he was a green young lad at the time. In fact, this is the reason I've never been tempted by tattoos. What's the chances that my tastes will stay the same for the rest of my life? (Thank goodness I don't still have the same haircut I had in college!)

That's the earliest mention I can find, so I'd hang it tentatively around MacMullen's neck. Though it was repeated in print by others, including Reiss.

Doesn't matter, she was wrong not to verify the information if she got it second hand, especially since that's the keynote of her story. Count me among those who thought lesser of Asante because of the "Get Paid" tattoo. I just sent MacMullen an e-mail:

It's truly unfortunate a journalist like yourself once again reinforces the stereotype of a lazy Globe staffer who can write well and not report with integrity. If you have any class, you'll correct this in print and issue an apology to Asante Samuel. I'd appreciate a response as well, but am not holding my breath.

Payment due
With 10 interceptions, Asante Samuel believes he has proven his worth, and he wants to be rewarded for all his hard work

FOXBOROUGH -- Tattoos are permanent. If you choose to have a message drilled onto your arm with a needle, then you must really mean what you say.
Check out Asante Samuel's tattoo: Get Paid.

Tattoo’s message lost in translation

FOXBORO -- When Asante Samuel [stats] was a sophomore in college at Central Florida, he was so taken by a Gnarls Barkley song that he decided to make it a permanent part of his body.
On Christmas break, he went to a tattoo parlor and braved the drill and needle. He had the name of the song etched on his left triceps. It’s called “Get Rich To This.” The words are spread top to bottom, encircling the visage of a building.
Before the playoffs last season, it was written - then followed up countless times - that the tattoo read, “Get Paid.”

“I don’t know who looked at it and said it was ‘Get Paid,’ but that’s what it is,” Samuel said, raising his left sleeve to show off the “Get Rich To This” tattoo. “Basically, it was a song by Gnarls Barkley when he was with Goodie Mob.”
Naturally, “Get Rich To This” can also be taken many ways. How does Samuel interpret the meaning as it relates to the song?
“It’s basically whatever you’re doing, you’re making the best of it,” he said. “If I’m writing a paper, I’m getting rich to this. I’m doing it my best, I’m putting my all into it. That’s basically what it is.”
It’s not quite the same as “Get Paid,” and it certainly doesn’t contain the same meaning. Samuel has taken a lot of heat for what many people thought was a tattoo that promoted greediness, selfishness, etc.
“You know how people are who want controversy,” Samuel said. “I don’t know how they got it mixed up, because it’s nowhere near, ‘Get Paid.’ Whoever did it just made a mistake, and it snowballed.”

ESPN had it right in July when some reporter there actually took the step of ASKING him about it:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=2934139&type=story

Speaking of trying to make you look bad, the media has had a field day with that tattoo of yours: "Get Paid."

Actually, they got it wrong. It says, "Get Rich To This." Gnarls Barkley came out with a song, "Get Rich To This." I take it to mean that whatever you're doing -- and it's not just about making money -- just get rich to this. You're doing your best. You're going all out. You want to succeed and do the best you're doing.

Gee, thanks for sharing. The english language is crying!

Aweseome!!! I think I will also send her an email but tone it down slightly. I like it when us fans can do what little we can do point out the lazy mistakes of the reporters who don't seem to care about how their irresponsible worlds can smear the player and the organization.

This is one of the reasons why I hate to 'move on' after each round of unfair reporting on the player/coaches/team. Players and the coaches should move on because they can't afford to be distracted. But what about us fans??Hadn't I known about this, I would have continued to view AS in a low light.

That's why I wish we do something about the spygate scandal because that one is going to stay with us for the life!

In all fairness (as much as this hurts):

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mike Reiss (4/5/07):

"Samuel, who has a tattoo that reads "Get Paid," told the NFL Network that the Patriots informed him they would compensate him with "an elite contract" this offseason."

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2007/04/05/samuel_eyes_trade/

Now, in his defense (and a WEAK one at that), he was probably trusting and relying on the accuracy of his colleague Jackie MacMullan (and the Globe fact checkers) who reported this 3 months earlier in the Globe.

All the same, Mike, verify.

yet another example of media hype distorting reality to create controversy...

per stated by the ESPN Ombudsman.

I too had my impression of AS influenced negatively by this. My fault for accepting what I read as truth, and unable or unwilling to check it out. This is the sad sad state of the MSM today...

Apologies to AS for eating this tripe.

Let's hope that the life's lesson in reporting with this and cameragate is not lost on Pats fans. The media quoting itself does not make something true.

Thank the gods for the internet, even with all its faults and errors.
