Pray these people are alright although i doubt it. I'll be very interested in the motives for this, although i think i already know.

Arizona congresswoman among 12 shot at Tucson grocery - CNN.com

CNN) -- U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was critically wounded Saturday in a shooting at a Tucson, Arizona, grocery store in which at least 11 other people were injured, officials said.

Darci Slaten, a spokeswoman for University Medical Center in Tucson, said Giffords was undergoing surgery Saturday afternoon for a gunshot wound to the head.

A federal judge from Arizona was among the 11 others shot in the incident, a law enforcement source told CNN.

The shooting happened shortly after 10 a.m. MST, Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jason Ogan said.

It doesn't look good. I'm hearing at least one staffer was killed and have seen a few links saying that she has now died in surgery. Either way, being shot in the head like that probably means her career is done and she'll probably never be the same again, even if she lives. It sucks.

Having flash backs to when Kennedy and Regan were shot, same sick feeling.

It sounds like the shooter just snapped. A 22 year-old ex Afghan War vet according to Shepherd Smith on Fox News. A conservative judge was also shot as well as a child, which makes me think that the shooter snapped. The doctor on TV right now says that she was awake and following their commands. Thank god.

Not to throw sand here, but I just thought that I should point out that it's a good thing that civilians can carry guns on their person in Arizona. From the sounds of it, someone opened fire on the shooter which effectively ended the shooting.

A surgeon announced in a press conference the congresswoman is in IC and he is optimistic however he also announced a "young child" died at the hospital. I think that is the biggest tragedy that will come of this no matter who else dies.

If that's true, and he wasn't a nutjob before going over there, maybe some good will come out of this at least in terms of more people recognizing the issues many vets coming back face. These are very serious mental health problems that a lot of people seem to want to deny.

Assuming that's true, there are nonetheless pros and cons of carry laws. Personally, I support them, but that's for Constitutional reasons, and my feeling that self-defense outweighs the potential harm. But there clearly is potential harm, as this incident may itself show -- I'm not sure whether this is the place for that discussion, though.

No, it isn't. That's why I said it with caution. Should anybody want to confront me on gun control laws and whatnot, I'll be happy to engage you in another thread.

    OT: "confront you"? eh ...

btw, where have you read that a crowd member firing on the attacker ended the attack? All I've read is that he ran and was tackled by somebody.

    ------------------------

was just reading more about this and got linked to stormfront. What a bunch of animals. On the rare occasions I wind up getting linked to those kinds of sites, it's a good reminder of just how horrible some people are.

Those of you here who think that racism is some leftwing / librul myth should read just a few minutes there and see whether you still feel that way.

quick everyone.... guess, before the suspect is identified:

    - rage addled American gun-nut cracker?
    or
    - Vicious Mexican gangland thug?

odd though, that lately it's always the Democrat who gets shot, downed in bizarre plane crash, receives Anthrax in the mail, etc.

What's wrong with my wording? Confront me, argue with me, state your beliefs, whatever. It doesn't matter.

OT: I don't know where you got the idea I was confronting you.

Just added to my other post, but didn't realize you had already responded -- where did you see that a crowd member firing on the assailant ended the attack?

I didn't say that you were confronting me. This is what I said...

That was clearly going out to anybody that wanted to argue gun control laws. Not just chicowalker. Hope that helps.

As for the report that a civilian shooter ended the gunman's rampage, it was reported on Shepard Smith's show on Fox News. Even if you hate Fox News, I'd definitely recommend watching it right now. At the very least, you can hear Smith keep trying to have "that moment" where all of America hinges on his words... and it's just not working out for him.

"The shooter says, 'I will not spend money not backed by gold, I will not trust in God'. My God have mercy on his soooouuuullll".

OT: Got it, no worries -- I know that's what you said, but it was also a rsponse to my post, so that's how I took it.

also OT: I dislike fox "news", but I like what I've seen of Shepard Smith.

Very sad, but credit the Palins, the Limbaughs, and Fox News for being more effective at inciting hate and violence than Osama bin Laden, since Obama got elected. The perp is obviously as mentally ill as a suicide bomber.

Wow ... epic fail of a post.

The guy was described by friends as quite liberal ... like you.

Actually, he's described as all over the place, and as distrustful of government--sounds like a paranoid schizophrenic.

But, aren't you being hypocritical by quickly labeling him as a liberal? My only point is that the rhetoric of hate incites the mentally ill. And, frankly, perhaps you missed it but Palin had a website with little targets over the candidates she wanted to defeat. That, in my opinion, is the kind of behavior we want to discourage, but of course you're free to defend that.

Not defending anything ... his friends describe him as quite liberal ... like you ... that's all.

you and a few others took a dangerous leap of assumptions here ... that inner hatred of the right is always ready to jump at every chance. You could wait to hear more facts but then you lose the excitement of the attack on the right. It's a momentum thing apparently.

Guy is a nut job ... blame his DNA or drugs or whatever.

I do blame the right. I think the right has been doing what it can to incite anger and hatred. I think that provokes unbalanced people in some cases.

By the way, pretty funny out the filter deleting s t f l out of the word "distru s t f u l"!

So ... why is the shooting all about Giffords?

5 people dead including a young girl and it's all about Giffords.

    Rather shameful I say.

He doesn't like a sane person in any way, nor do his actions reflect on a political party or ideology. In my opinion, both parties are close to useless and engage in senseless rhetoric all the time. But to blame them is asinine. This is a sad story, made sadder by the inclusion of partisan politics.
