I recently left the challenge to people to name a predominantly Hispanic nation that wasn't considered a 3rd World country. I am still waiting for a response....

I always considered the people in Spain as Spaniards, not Hispanic. But if that's your best example, then I rest my case...

A 3rd world country is a lossely used word most commonly today referring to a developing country that is relatively underdeveloped relative to the rest of the world.

Mexico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru are all better than 3rd world countries. I may have missed a few ... but those off the top of my head.

Hispanic really does not = poor anymore.

OK cool... thanks for clearing that up... that explains why the citizens of those countries are doing so well economically that they don't need to invade America for health care, free money and miscellaneous crime comitting...

I'll take it then that you don't consider Brazil a Hispanic country...? Interesting...

I'm sure there are some people there who speak Spanish. That would also go for Japan, though.
    Can we end this yet?

Costa Rica's and Venezuela I don't think are considered third world.

QuiGon, was the question asked because you were not able to find the answer on your own, or was it asked because you wanted to imply some inferiority of all Hispanic countries?

Most Hispanic nations are 2nd World, i.e. developing. I'm not sure what the point of your post is. Is it to make the point that immigrants come to the US because it is richer? Well, yeah, that's what immigrants do. That's what your ancestors did, probably. I doubt they went to the US to make themselves poorer. Oh, and the entire world knows that the US is the richest and most powerful country in the world. Trust me, we are never allowed to forget it.

Brazil is NOT Hispanic, because its people are not descended from Spaniards. You might want to use the term South American, if you wish to include them.

The Jedi Master's point is clear. Maybe he'll let us in on it. Go out and find a Brazilian and try to call him Hispanic, but make sure you duck! Portugese = Spanish = Italian = French = English  And he has the nerve to call me and others on the board a moron!

Actually the Spanish language has 2 dialects ... one of which is Latin America dialect.

    Spaniards are Spaniads not Hispanic.

Hispanic is gradually becomming a useless term which is unliked.

People from south of the border living in America
prefer to be called Latin American. Those visiting prefer to be called where they are from: Colombian, Dominican, Guatemalan... It is more accurate because they were not born in Spain ... Spain was perhaps 1/2 dozens or more generations ago...think French Canadians who are more Canadian than French. These people are more Cental America than they are Spanish.

Ohhh ... they hate that NEM ... those are fighting words to them.

Also ... Cape Verdeans who are Portuguese emigrated to the
Cape Verde Islands hate to be called Portuguese ... they are Cape Verdeans.

Also...Also ... those from the Azores like to distinguish themselves
from Portuguese. They will politely tell you they are Portuguese from the Azores....similar to Sicilians who are Italians.

Touchy...touchy world we live in ...

BTW I am a Rhode Islandian American. :bricks:
