Anyone else notice Vinateri nailing a 53 yard FG vs PIT?

It was in the Colts preseason game against PIT....which widely regarded as one of the toughest stadiums to kick in because of the awful turf.

I never would have thought Adam would be able to keep playing 7 years after he left NE. At least, certainly not with the ability to nail 50+ yard field goals; a aspect of his game that tailed off towards the end of his career in NE.

Apparently he nailed two 50+ yarders in 2011, too. And two in 2008, as well.

Will love Adam forever, but what he's doing today is of absolutely zero interest to me unless he's kicking against us. Then I care for about 185minutes.

Saw it. I thought an announcer would hype it as they always say how difficult it is to kick there. The record must be about that distance. Then again, maybe I had it on mute.

It was also a 53 yarder, no matter what the date.

Kickers tend to have more longevity than other positions but no matter how you slice it, a 53 yarder is impressive.

He certainly wasn't kicking long when he left us. I'm sure we weren't intending to pay him long term and are better off with Gost.

He took a gamble and it paid off, so good luck to him. You have to give it up after a while.

Meh, not unheard of for a kicker to be on his game into his 40's. John Kasay is older than him and is coming off 147 points last year. David Akers is just 2 years younger and coming off 166. Pretty sure they were the 2 leading point scorers overall for kickers last year. And both made as many, if not more 50 yarders than AV. It's really not that shocking.

I watched it live as it happened. We talked about it that night for awhile.

I was certainly surprised on some level, since Heinz field is not an easy place to kick.

It is the longest FG in the history of Heinz field, even though it occurred during the preseason.

I'm not sure whether or not it was towards the open end, but I would seriously doubt it.

We passsed on him and his 2.5 million dollar salary at the time to use a 4th rd pick on a cheap rookie kicker, and everything worked out pretty well.

I'm like half his age and can't kick a PAT, so...

That's true, I certainly couldn't do it, but the warmer weather will add yards to his kicks

The ball travels further in warm conditions.

The Ghost is younger and stronger but losing AV cost the Patriots a little bit of Mojo.

    Thanks for the link.

Interestingly enough, while the absolute numbers are lower because he lost most of 09 to injury, AV's performance has been slightly better statistically over the last six years than during his 10 years in Foxboro.

Over the last six years, his FGM% is 84.9% vs. 81.9% during his years in New England, no doubt partially reflecting the Dome conditions in Indy. He's also done better from 50 yards and out, averaging 1.4 attempts per year (taking out 09) and making 57.1% of them vs. 1.7 long attempts per year with the Pats, where he made 47.1% of the long kicks.

Over the same period, Gostkowski has made 84.4% of his FG's and averaged 0.8+ kicks over 50 yards per year (five in six years), making three of the five or 60% of them.

Over the last six years, Gostkowski has averaged 27.8 kicks per year; Vinatieri, taking out the data from 2009, has averaged 27.4 kicks per year.

So, this looks like one of those rare situations where both players and both teams ended up winners.

Both kickers did well, just that one goes to the Superbowl a whole lot more.

Look at Rob Bironas' stats from 50+. He's 16/23 with a 60yarder to beat Philly a few years ago. AV is 4/11 from that distance since 2003 and Bironas averages 3 or 4 a year attempts.

Is that what you find when you attempt your 50 yard Field Goals in a windy stadium? :)

Talk about an ambiguous comment. Do you mean AV's four trips for four rings (he was injured in 09 or it would be five for four) or Gostkowski's two trips since the last time AV went?
