    Saw Dre Bly's contract...
Samuel could be a major distraction this year if he chooses to be (think Deion Branch, Lance Briggs).

I would like PATS to sign him to long term deal....but if they can't...

what about package him with #28 pick...move into top 10 and take either Landry or Leon Hall?

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

There's always a "chance", but from the way Asante himself was talking a few weeks ago, it seems unlikely. There may be a deal done, in principle (as well as principal), with the parties awaiting the proper time to announce it.

Is there any cap advantage to holding off announcing a new contract? That is a question for better capologists than I. In any event, these possibilities make the draft a compelling spectacle.

You could prob get a early first rounder stright up for Samuel. Proven corners are coveted.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

anybody know how much Briggs made last year?

I understand why people compare assante's situation to that of Branch's and Briggs, but they really aren't all that comparable.

First, Branch was never a free agent. The rift between he and NE was about the last year of his contract. Branch had a problem with what he was going to make in 2006. it had nothing to do with what he was making in the years that followed.

Assante is making TONS more in 2007 than he made in 2006. while i'm sure he'd prefer a long-term deal with a huge bonus, he hardly has grounds for complaint given the size of pay increase he's getting. this is fundamentally different than branch's situation.

As for Briggs, he is more similar to Assante's situation as they were both tagged. but there's a lot more going on in Chicago than merely the fact he was franchised. for starters, the organization is backing a loser like Rex Grossman. That'd be enough for me to start looking around for a better situation. second, the team seems to have a problem with the front office when it comes to the perception of the money it is willing to spend. particularly with regard to a new deal for lovie. Third, Briggs is on record as saying he wants Urlacher's leadership role. and Urlacher ain't going nowhere. so there's a lot going on there and again, i don't know how much Briggs made in 2006 but is the disparity between that figure and the franchise number as large as it is with Assante?

Assante may very well hold out. I don't think so. but can we please stop comparing his apple to the branch and briggs oranges?

I hope not. Picks are nice but there comes a point where you just need the players.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

There is no cap advantage in holding off on a deal with a franchise tagged player. Any deal would certainly lower his 2007 cap hit to 1/5th or 1/6th of his bonus (amortization) plus salary (which on the heels on a signing bonus is generally in the minimum range), which would likely cut his present cap hit at least in half.

I know some surmize there is some potential great strategic significance to withholding announcing a deal, but in reality other than perhaps causing a team or two just ahead of or behind us to maneuver if they believe we are targeting a specific player as a result, teams draft who they draft based either on their own need or assessment of best available talent.

Not to mention postponing an announcement would also postpone the player's receipt of his signing bonus, and given it would be in the multi millions I just don't see a player or agent passing up investment and interest income on that signing bonus to play draft decoy. A deal isn't official until it's submitted to the league and they sign off on it, and league sources can't keep their mouths shut when in posession of significant information like a deal having been submitted.

Samuel's agent basically said that the tag was not a problem for them so long as both sides continued to view it as a means to an end - that end being a long term deal. Only the team knows at this point how far they are prepared to go to that end. And only Asante and his agent know what their bottom line demands are and whether or not there is anyone else interested in paying him what he wants in a long term deal.

If they cannot get a deal done then it will eventually become a problem/issue, because after July 15th they cannot do a long term deal regardless of whether the team or player might still want to. At that point the tag represents what the agent said would be a problem for them - playing under a one year deal with no possibility of a long term deal.

I just don't see Belioli heading into a season with that kind of potential for disruption and disharmony on the heels of last season's debaucle with Branch. Not with all the positives they have created already this off season with the FA signings of Thomas, Welker and Stallworth. And since trading him would necessitate having someone else in mind to replace him, I can't see it happening except before the draft. After the draft it would almost have to involve a player in place of or in addition to picks. There just isn't anyone on the roster you can honestly pencil in to replace a starting CB. Gay has yet to prove he can stay on the field or be anything more than a one year wonder three years removed. And Wilson hasn't played the position since college and has struggled with injuries as it is.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

Samuel is not getting traded. Why would we trade a good young cover corner, who basically matured in our system?? CB is a very important piece to our defense.

And please people... STOP with the Landry nonsense!!! PLEASE!!!!! I'M BEGGING YOU!!!

Chances that we would be able to draft Laron Landry WERE slim and NONE. As soon as he showed up to the combine 225lb of sheer Muscle; then promptly blew the roof off of the RCA dome... SLIM LEFT TOWN!!! Forget it!

why sign all these impact players , then trade your #1 corner makes no sense, they can afford the hit and it gives them a year to test drive samuel to make sure hes not a one year wonder

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

Samuel won't hold out after he saw what the Pats did with Branch. Besides he will be making a load of money unlike Branch last year.

Besides why would a team not draft Leon Hall but instead take an older Samuel? Granted he's "proven", but Hall could still have a longer and more productive career. Hall will also give a team the long term franchise CB they're looking for and sell a lot more jerseys :)

Why would a team take a talented, young, proven nfl corner? Asante is like 24 years old. He is coming off a season in which he led the nfl in picks. He has made plays on the biggest of stages. Jets game, Charger game, Indy game. Hall could be a lot of things. Hall could be a bust. Hall also has a longggg way to go to do what Samuel did last year. If he ever does it.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

Look at the Lance Briggs situation. Clearly there is a divide between Briggs, his agent and the Chicago Bears. He isn't likely to see a long term contract come his way from the Bears and I don't know if they could afford to set a precedent of rewarding a player player that has mouthed off about his team and an agent that threatens to have his player sit out all but the number of games necessary to earn a year for his pension.

In that case, you have to trade the guy. I will actually take this opportunity to vote for the Chicago Bears as the stupidest front office in the league. First they appear as if they aren't going to pay Lovie Smith (thank God they did). Then they trade Thomas Jones (didn't Benson get hurt in the playoffs and didn't the team rat out Benson earlier in the season for leaving practices early). They land Achuletta (junk) for nothing, but have to pay him a load of cash and they can't get any leverage in trading Briggs because they come right out and say he won't get an extension from them. Idiots.

Now, I don't remember exactly where the Deion Branch situation was at this point last season. At times I remember the word being good and other times I remember it sounding horrible. Toward the end there was some sabre rattling to the team, much like Briggs and his sitting out till the end of the season. At that point, I think the Pats knew that they had to move him because his agent and Branch were allowing the situation to get ugly in public. It is one thing for things to get ugly behind closed doors, but when the door opens, you have to play the PR card and not start threatening this and that. Damn lawyers.

Now Samuel has played nice and so has his agent. That isn't to say that in the next few days this will not go South, but for all practical purposes the Patriots have less reasons to trade him and more cause to keep him. As soon as the threats pop up, the Pats need to trade him to the South Pole and cross their fingers about their secondary.

I hope they just sign him though. I'm not banking on a rookie or even Hobbs stepping up big time, but I'm not there every day and don't know what is what.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

What they did with Branch last year (traded him for a 1st to a team that signed him to a 6 year $39M deal with a $12.5M signing bonus) is exactly the reason Asante would hold out. If that's your worst case scenario, why not?

Branch would have been making $9M+ last season had he taken the 3 year deal the team was offering ($8M signing bonus plus his rookie deal salary) and yet he held out. Players do this because they know that if they get hurt that signing bonus or franchise tag salary is potentially the last big payday they will ever see. They don't want to end up like Ty Law who while older had a bankable resume and still ended up playing on a series on one year and we'll see deals once he left here because he took one bad step in Pittsburgh in 2004.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

They should sign Samuel if they can before the draft.
Bly got a pretty rich deal but its a lot better than what Clements got. (5/33) or 6.6 per.
I think if Samuel wants Bly type deal they need to pony up.
Having a guy signed before the draft is a position of strength.
I have not heard of the Pats shopping Samuel so it is unlikely they can pull a draft day deal on the spot.
Look how long it is taking for the Bears to consider the Briggs trade.
I definitely do NOT want another Branch or Milloy situation where the negotiations suddenly sour AFTER the draft, and now you can't even replace your player with a draft prospect that you can bring into camp.

I want Asante to prove that he can be consistant. Remember this WAS his contract year and had $$$ going through his head. You have to remember the Asante that would get toasted for the first 3 years. I want to see an encore THAN work something out with him.

absolutley none. The pats are counting on him as the future of our CB position. Every team needs a player like Asante so there is absolutley no possible chance at all.

WTF? The situations are in no way comparable. A top-5 CB is a MUCH more valuable commodity than an average WR; I don't know why you'd need anyone to tell you that.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

I still don't think Branch and Samuel are comparable.

Branch was playing for $1 million - Samuel for nearly $8 million. It was worth it to Branch to sit out - it would not be worth it to Samuel to hold out.

There's currently no cap pressure on the Patriots to take the Franchise tag off - heck, it wouldn't surprise me if they still could afford to tag him next year.

I guess it all comes down to whether the Patriots feel that their defensive scheme requires a marquee CB. I think they do need very good CBs - but I don't think they need marquee players at Dre Bly pricetags.

Given that, I think they keep the tag on Samuel and let the year play out, with the expectation that Samuel will not sit nor cry poverty for getting a paltry $8 million this season.

Meanwhile, they buy themselves a year to see what they have in Gay

Show me a link where Samuel says he is content to play for the franchise tag amount. I think Samuel expects a long term deal. Playing for 7.7M for one season is a lot of money to you or me, but it is NOT the security of a longterm deal and big bonus money that a pro athlete and his agent want. Big world of difference imo.

I don't see the problem with paying a YOUNG CB like Samuel with Dre Bly money. They have the cap space.

Re: Any Chance Pats trade Assunte Samuel on darft day?

    two words:signing bonus

There's a good chance Asante will get traded on Draft day or before july 16.

The reason is that every year he plays under the Franchise tag is a LOST year of signing bonus $$.

Despite the fact he will receive 7.8M in Franchise tender,in his mind,he will not be getting the 5M-7M in upfront bonus money he and his agent desires.A Franchised player knows that another team will always pay more in upfront money than your existing team....it's the nature of the business.

I believe Asante wants a signing bonus between what Dre Bly received and what Clements got from SF.This is way over what we gave to AD,who came from another team.To gives this to a player, already on your roster, would cause serious problems with the other veterans on the Patriots.

Trust me,on draft day,if the Pats draft a CB in the First round, and other teams didn't get one of the top CB's........this is going to really heat up.

Faced with being tagged again next year, which would be another year w/o the signing bonus,Asante WILL hold out for 10 games this season.

    WHY?.......because it works!
The risk of injury is too great to play under the Franchise tag.

If Asante doesn't sign by Draft day, this is going to get ugly.....because,like Ty Law,Asante will go to whomever pays the most bonus $$.......and there will be a few teams, who didn't spend during the FA period, looking to make a big splash for their fan base.

BB/SP want to resolve this, either by signing or trading him.....they don't want a repeat of the Branch fiasco,to do this again would have serious ramifications on team morale, for a second season,IMHO.
