    Too funny.

If a terrorist is left in power, it's Obama's fault.

If Islamists instead take over, it's Obama's fault.

How about this: try articulating what you think the principles behind our foreign policy should be, and then you can judge Obama, along with any candidates to replace him, and perhaps have some credibility. Otherwise the only principle you're espousing appears to be that you don't like Obama.

Self determination and democracy suck. We really need to use the CIA and install governments we can control.

It is better to know the dog that will bite you, instead of the dog that might bite you..

Thought the right wanted to get rid of Quadaffi, especially after Lockerbie..

What do you think will happen after we leave Iraq, we changed that country also..

Why is it always the left vs the right?

Who in America wanted to keep Qadhafi ?

Guess you did not read my comments, what did you expect to happen in this country??

Poof, all of a sudden something that resembles a western democracy with all of its freedoms???

The whole regime change thing, that has been our foreign policy for a long time now, can reap unintended consequences...

Agree w/Darryl on this one. We're doomed to the UCs while we mistakenly continue to think we are playing chess. Trouble is, there are smart people who don't want to be pawns all over the damn world.

Qadafi or Kadafi or Ghadaffy or whatever wasn't just a prick, he was downright loony. In fact, I remember a bunch of really really lefties being invited to Libya in the 80s to view some kind of parade in some kind of "people's diplomacy" thing. So they got invited, they're watching the little dog and pony show, and a whole phalanx of Eilte Badass Brigade or whatever march by, biting the heads off a bunch of live chickens. I sh1t you not, this was in the news at the time. I still remember what one of the American lefties said... "I don't think they love animals very much."

Nobody was a fan of this guy, but it looks right now like surprise surprise, they're very interested in keeping Islam involved in gubmit.

That said, that leader's phrasing was ambiguous. We'll see what it means. He said no law would be made that's contrary to Islam, which puts the onus on the Islamists to prove a given law is anti-Islamic. He didn't say they'd institute law to establish the perfect "modern caliphate," sort of as the hard-core Taliban types would say.

It's an interesting difference, but we'll see if it matters, or whether it's just trying to have his cake and eat it too.

If a majority voted to enslave a minority group, would that be "self determination" as well?

What's missing from all of these movements are basic rights like freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. If you create an "Islamic" state, you are denying full participation to anyone who is not a Muslim.

This now makes three that we have helped to establish. Good grief.

    At least three..

That is the issue with our long standing foreign policy, we know what is best for everyone..

I do not support tyranny of the majority, but also believe that nations evolve towards more freedom if not set back by war and dictatorship. As people get better educated and enter the middle class, they tend to value their own lives more and are less willing to die in the name of God. Unfortunately, this evolution does not happen overnight, and the situation in the ME and much of Africa is a direct result of western imperialism (not the US so much, as the European powers). The west does not want these countries to evolve because keeping them backward has been very profitable. If it was not for slavery, Colonialism, and imperialism it's is unlikely that our standard of living would be as high as it is.

We have to do what we can -- not militarily -- to encourage tolerance and peacefulness by all nations, but unfortunately, the international military industrial complex tends to like to help nations build militaries, not schools.

I agree with your criticism of that government, but you didn't seem to address what Patters was saying.

Not everybody views the world as we do, and our foreign policy runs the risk of setting up governments that are as bad, if not worse, than the leaders we dislodge.

Is this really a game we should be playing? What should our role be around the globe -- is it to set up democratic governments and enforce that they recognize the same rights that our government does (or should)?

Right, let them go, why the hell are we sticking our noses in their business, no wonder they hate us, f-ck them, leave them to their barbaric way of life and their killing, BUT, if some of them decide to live in America and become citizens of our country that is fine, they will be free to practice their own religion but they will have to obey our Constitution and our Laws like all Americans if they don't agree then they should leave this country, if they refuse they should be Thrown Out, America does not want nor does it need the problems with Islam that now exist in France, Germany and the UK.

Welcome To America If You Don't Like Our Laws Get Out
If you want to beat, behead or throw rocks at your women don't do it in America

I was questioning the characterization of replacing a secular dictatorship with a theocracy as "self-determination". We have done the people of Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya a great disservice in promoting the idea that elections = democracy.

Probably the same as when American bigots beat or kill gays?

How do you think cons will react? Think they'll cheer? After all, we've had GOP debate crowds boo a gay soldier and cheer Perry's record of executions.

They're even worse than the American religious right, although there are segments of that group that want to imprison women who have abortions, outlaw gay rights, and make Christianity the official religion. If they got that, who knows what they would ask for next. Religion seems to lose its power with economic development, not with wars.
