I'm going on the assumption that this kind of talk is all about mediots trying to stir things up to get clicks and viewers and readers.

It's inconceivable to me that the Colts and Pats won't do deals with Manning and Brady this offseason.

I know that the rules and the CBA would allow the Krafts not to extend Tommy this year and then to franchise him in 2011. However, to my way of thinking it would be a complete betrayal of trust not to give Brady a contract now, after he clearly showed last year that he is still "Tom Brady." Planning to franchise him in '11 would mean that he would have to play two full seasons with the risk of career ending injury before he gets the guaranteed $40 million or so he is worth. I can see that threat as part of a hardball negotiating strategy, but in the end I can't see them actually doing it. The Krafts fully understand that their Franchise would be worth a few hundred million short of the billion at which it is now valued without Tom Brady.

I just hope that the deal gets done before the lies and innuendo of Florio, Silver and others take on a life of their own.

Was Brady away from the Pats at an "eye-brow raising rate"? I must have missed it. I am pretty sure he was in Foxboro this offseason more than he was in Foxboro last offseason. It was last year where people were talking about his holding Gisselle's purse at a fashion show in Europe, his body guards shooting at paparazzi in Brazil at his wedding, etc. Brady seemed to be in Foxboro at least every third week and was at all the voluntary OTAs (although he might have missed a day or two here and there).

Talking about the Colts doesn't generate site traffic for him. It is a small market team that doesn't have the passionate fans like the Pats, Jets, Steelers, etc. who are going to post a hundred posts trashing him. Florioo is all about the site traffic.

Yeah we all know PFT is just desperate for page views these days. Their traffic is almost non existent especially with the backing of NBC. Have to make up stories about the big fanbases team to keep that ship from sinking.

Brady probably wants a "fair market deal", the Patriots probably want to pay under fair market like they did last time. Just like the Steelers they will try to use the success of the franchise as an excuse to make a below value offer, and most of the times it works to their advantage.

Brady knows Manning is going to get a mega contract, he is worth just as much and the difference between what that ends up being and what the Pats want to give him now is probably a lot of money.

Manning will get paid, the Pats will be forced to pay a LOT more than they want to Brady and all will be happy again in Patriot land.

This stuff will just keep coming and coming until his contract situation is resolved - which it will be, one way or the other. Agonizing over it is a fool's errand.

    Re: Another Brady Article

Brady hasn't won the parking space since maybe 2004... In 2008 Belichick told him to get the hell away from the game to recharge his batteries. The veterans all needed that after the way undefeated slipped away after all the increasing pressure they performed under for 20 weeks.

This particular piece is just another example of Florio's hits driven mentality. He used Breer's redundant, not to mention inept contract musings as just one more excuse to pen a what I've heard but can't source report about how unhappy Brady is here with the bumbling cheapskate FO and ownership he's gone to four superbowls with in eight seasons as the starter here... You know, those two SOB's he's so disconnected to he had one at his very private wedding last off season and the other recently rode a bike 50 miles to support him at a charity event he conducted during one of his hit and run three week off season stints here...

If anyone needs more reason to conclude Brady isn't going anywhere, it's what owner in his right mind would alienate a QB whose more successful on the field and apparently more commanding of attention off it than even freakin' Peyton Manning...

Tom said a long time ago on the record that IHO the difference another million made after taxes wasn't significant enough to him to matter. Winning here mattered more. And it was about a million he left on the table because he was never going to get what Manning got because Manning was franchised at the time and Tom was three years into a five year extension. He also said he didn't expect others to emulate him, he was doing what he did based on what mattered to him. Just like Tedy did. And it wasn't so that they could overpay Deion Branch or anyone else, either. He understood their financial discipline and their system that included spreading the wealth among a stronger, deeper middle class, and he said he respected them for it and for not letting emotion cloud better judgement. Had they overpaid to retain Branch and Givens or even Samuel, guys like Welker and Moss and Bodden wouldn't be here now. They extended Warren and then Wilfork but after moving on from Seymour. Mankins likely won't be here past this season, but eventually others on that OL will replace him on the field and in the payroll. Bob and Bill don't sit in the back room divying the savings. It always goes into the product one way or another.

Kraft is on record saying that the goal is a deal that is fair for both sides. It's unfortunate they don't know in advance what kind of parameters that deal can entail just yet because - as Polian stated in commenting on both his Manning and Brady contract situations just this weekend - there is no CBA in place for 2011 and beyond, though eventually there surely will be... And this has always been a place where cap management mattered. As it has in Indy, albeit while employing a different formula. In 2006 Polian threatened to sue everyone because it turned out his best laid plans for ongoing bonus conversion were suddenly disallowed under terms of an expiring CBA. He's not going to put himself in that position ever again. That kind of discipline may annoy fans and mediots looking for instant gratification, but it's the way smart business men conduct business unemotionally.

Who have they 'squeezed' ? Mankins? He was (possibly) offered a nice deal. Wilfork? He recieved a nice deal. Samuel? Wasnt worth what he wanted...Im confused, who was squeezed, or is this the media using that "patriots are cheap" crap again?

Clarify this for me, please. Both sides have cited issues with the CBA as reasons for not persuing new contracts more aggressively right now. Different situation or not, though, it just shows that Manning is going through some bumps in the road on the way to a new contract with the Colts. Why is it not making more news?

Michael Lombardi just said on NFL Network that he believes both Brady and Manning will eventually have new contracts just as soon as the CBA is worked out. He also mentioned the possibility of franchising Brady after the season is over if the CBA isn't worked out then. Jamie Dukes then came on afterward and speculated that a contract hasn't been worked out because of Brady's age.

Also I think, as Mark Schlereth, in an unusual moment of candor, pointed out on HSPN last night, without Manning the Colts are a 4--12 team (his words); everybody knows they have to do a deal. Without Brady, because of BB, the Pats would still be competitive, though no doubt not at a Championship level.

Although it is possible that the Pats are hesitant to extend a 5 year contract to Brady because of age, Dukes was more or less just taking a guess at it. For me, the only time I really listen to what Dukes has to say is when he's discussing offensive linemen.

It seems to me that every time this meme shows up, whether on this board or in the media, the writer is really saying Kraft is cheap. Maybe six of one, half a dozen of the other, but it always comes across as an ad hominem attack on Kraft, not an insult aimed at the Patriots organization in general.

Re: Another Brady Article - Brace Yourselves....

Leave it to Dukes to get to the true crux of the matter...Brady's being a year and a half younger than Manning...:bricks:

Before he signed his last contract in 2004, Peyton Manning was exclusive fr...fr...franchise tagged for $18M to buy time for Polian and Condon to figure out the best way to structure a $126M deal under an $85M cap without thoroughly hamstringing the franchise and for his owner to pawn some personal assets to help fund his signing bonus.

At the end of the day all the Brady angst has a lot more to do with the hit potential inherent in speculating that Brady might leave and totally screw Belichick's undeserved rep while managing to underscore the resentful's concurrent longstanding not so secret belief that 6th round Tom was never more than a system QB anyway... Whole different dynamic in Indy where Manning is readily acknowledged as the generational talent lynchpin of a franchise model which is expected to crumble on the day he departs having compiled largely meaningless massive regular season personal stats over his 16 or so year run while probably settling for just one ring won in far less dramatic fashion.

This is all part and parcel of the media mindset that bemoans every time we're the focus of attention in February because the way we've about our business during a decade of post season dominance is frankly boring and utilitarian to those on the outside looking in... They would be positively giddy at the prospect of Brady choosing the $$$ and floundering through the backend of his career in SF or Belichick crashing back to earth absent a franchise QB or best of all Kraft being knocked down a peg and finally being forced to part company with the dour Belichick and admit his entire ownership success was sheer luck driven as opposed to inspired by genius...and somehow through it all the mediots were always right.

    Sure....

1.) Manning is perceived as having been better compensated in the recent past.

2.) Manning has already been informed, publicly, by his team's owner that he will become the highest paid QB in the NFL.

3.) Manning's not an NFLPA rep seeing his contract used as an example of the 'goodness' of taking less money.

4.) Brady is more than a year younger than Manning, has won more SBs than Manning, and is a better QB than Manning, yet it's generally reported that he'll get a smaller contract than Manning, and nothing Kraft has stated has done anything to counter this assumption.

5.) Manning has not had an ACL injury and missed the better part of a full season as a result, although he's had other surgeries of a 'lesser' nature, including neck surgeries.

6.) Brady has clearly pulled back from the team in the recent offseasons. You may, or may not, accept the stated reasons why, but the withdrawal itself is there for all to see.

After that last article he posted about how the Jets need to get their BFF Roger Goodell to fine the Pats over "abusing the injury report", I don't plan on following anything he posts or ever taking him seriously.

    His writing is hot garbage.

Just because it's the dead period of the season doesn't mean lazy journalism and speculation are akin to informative pieces and fact. Mike Florio sucks at his job.

    Re: Another Brady Article

Let me take a stab at this. The Pats wear the black hat in the NFL as a result of winning multiple championships in recent history, followed by Spygate, followed by intense scrutiny in which they remain competitive. That makes bad news to the Pats a far bigger media attraction to the whole of the NFL. Brady has far greater celebrity status than Manning (who shows up more on the celebrity pages) despite Manning's commercial appearances. Belichick is both reviled and respected in the NFL fan circles generally, so any misfortune or poor decision-making is celebrated in the media.

The factual differences between Brady and Manning are readily addressed through Brady's statement on his contract in 2005. Unless we characterize Brady as stupid then, his words would seem to be the best evidence of his position now. His involvement in the NFLPA could reasonably suggest a desire to help players collectively, not himself, when he could readily have claimed a bigger contract in 2005 if he wanted it. It may be crazy, but the fact he becomes a rep on the eve of a huge CBA showdown may symbolize no more than wanting to be a leader in the NFL. The great thing about articles offering only opinions is we can spin this garbage in any direction. Select the facts you like and just sling your story line.

    Re: Another Brady Article

It's simple. It is the perception by the media. The Pats are considered cheap while the Colts are perceived to generously pay their top players. The media seem to ignore that the Pats make guys like Vince Wilfork, Randy Moss, Richard Seymour, Ton Brady, etc. among the highest paid players at their position when they are given new contracts and only focus on guys like Asante Samuel, Deion Branch, and Logan Mankins. The Colts haven't had such contract issues at least until this year.

What the media chooses to ignore is while the Pats are tough negotiators, they clearly are not afraid to pay players they think are worth the money top dollar. They clearly just didn't feel guys Asante Samuel (a great CB, but not elite) and Deion Branch (a good system guy who is a bit too fragile) were worth the money they were looking for. They did feel Seymour was when they made him the highest paid D-lineman at the time and Wilfork who is the highest paid 3-4 NT unless the Redskins decide to keep Haynesworth (which is still iffy). Moss got close to top money and so did Brady (although Brady certainly could have gotten more).

All this talk is just offseason filler. There is next to no chance that the Pats don't resign Brady. Kraft has said as much. Brady wants to stay here. Things will be worked out.

    Re: Another Brady Article

Yup. If you actually listen to Brady when he's spoken to his union involvement, even noting his tone, he's pretty short on rhetoric and pretty strong on common sense reasoning. He acknowledges compared to the rest of us they all make too much although he remains concerned about those left behind within football's ranks who didn't make enough (either because they never cracked a top 20 or got beyond a couple of mid level taxi squad seasons or they broke down before they reaped a sizeable reward their talent demanded or they came before the advent of FA or long before a cap floor let alone an exploding cap. I think like his better half Brady genuinely cares about the less fortunate on all levels. Not that Manning doesn't, he runs his camps and charities too. I just think Tom is more inclined to put his own money where his mouth is where football is concerned, too. But he's not a pushover, just smart enough to realize that you and everyone else can made a damn good living in this game without killing the golden goose, he calls it balancing interests, and perhaps you can even right a few wrongs in the process and in the end get everyone a fair deal.

I guess you could spin that guy as personally disconnected or rationally engaged depending largely on which audience you were looking to pander to... I think tom stepped up to the plate because he feared the kind of morons who have tended to represent in the past were not going to be capable of managing what lies ahead in everyone's best interest. Kinda the same reason Kraft became as involved in league business as he has over the last several seasons.

In terms of the off-season workouts and Brady - Kraft is a shrewd businessman. We are going to see - or already have begun to see - him begin his contingency plan in case the unthinkable happens (Brady and the team cannot reach a long term agreement). Part of that contingency plan is justifying to his fan base how that could happen, and part of that means repeatedly pointing out that Brady is not at the voluntary offseason workouts, in order to intimate he doesn't have the desire he once had. If you notice, Belichick could care less and flat-out stated that these offseason workouts are an individual - not a team - based thing. Kraft, on the other hand, has brought this up numerous times this offseason, to the media - which, goes against the Patriot way of saying "no comment" on matters like this.

He has not brought this up numerous times. He has repeated essentially the same mantra when the media repeatedly askes him the same inane questions...and they have cherry picked and selectively parsed and spun his comments to suit their agendas on numerous occasions.
