Re: Announcements & advice for those heading to AZ

Is there a central location near the sradium where you can walk bar to bar?

In Houston they had a psuedo Bourbon Street where the majority of fans would party every night.

Triumph, got an answer for you:

There is an area right next to the stadium called the Westgate Center. It is brand new. It is a good place to walk around, with lots of shops and a few clubs, including the just opened Margaritaville.

Of course, on Thursday BEFORE THE GAME, THE PLACE TO BE WILL BE THE VINE IN CENTRAL PHOENIX! ;)

Hope this helps.

Re: Advice for buying SB XLII tickets

I have gone twice and both times, including SB36, and each time there were tickets available at the stadium at kickoff for face value or even less if you have the patience to wait. Scalpers collect the big bucks now, but the price will plummet just before kickoff for whatever seats are left. And there are always seats. If you are willing to sit upper deck, that is the most affordable way to go.

Wow, first time I've heard that story. At 38 and 39, you couldn't get anywhere near the stadium without a game ticket/parking pass, which means folks looking to score tix right before kickoff would have to find someone selling several blocks away. I didn't see anyone selling on the street corners at either venue, and plenty of people holding signs looking.

I had tix to SB36 but at SB38 we got shut out. Prices never came back down and there was nothing available on gameday. I heard estimates of upwards of 20,000 Pats fans also being shut out.

Some questions...

Is there anything going on inside the grounds of the stadium prior to the pre-game show?
Is the stadium in close proximity to anything/everything? Or is this stadium in the middle of nowhere?

I was at 36 38 and 39. At 36 everybody I went down with got in for face. I won the lottery but I didn't need to. Remember this was after 9/11 and the Pats were big underdogs. This story got relayed by those that went because I saw thousands in the streets outside Reliant for 38 with no tickets to be had. The had all heard the stories from SB 36. In Jax I don't remember even seeing anyone selling tickets. Plus you had to take those buses to the stadium. You gave the best advice I have seen here. If you think logically you won't be at the SB.

Buses at Jacksonville? I must have missed those. I think I had to walk at least two miles to where we parked. Worst city to have a Super Bowl at. I'd take Detroit over Jacksonville. At least there's things to do in Detroit.

Yeah, there's no rationalizing spending this much money. For SB38, I said, "It's a once in a lifetime thing." For SB39, "Ok, a chance to see us become a dynasty. This will be my last time." For SB42, "Get this out of my system now. Because once I'm married, these SB trips won't be happening anymore. Plus I can potentially witness sports history."

Not sure what my excuse will be next time.

That's an easy one. "Damn, can't wait to get away from that b!tch for a couple days."

Yeah, everything I've seen has suggested that the market for tickets outside super bowls is virtually nonexistent, given the high value of the tickets, the NFL security perimeter, and the possibility of fakes. This was certainly my experience at the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago. There were hundreds of people who wanted tickets and who all thought that they were going to find scalpers desperate to get rid of tickets just before kick off. The opposite was true. Ten minutes after the game started, those with tickets were literally holding auctions in the street with fans who had flow in from Ohio and Miami with sheer panic on their faces, calculating how much more ATM money they could withdraw.

If you are going to go this route, I would recommend getting there early. It's tough to think of a natural place for scalpers to congregate. I can think of two possibilities. One is the "Just Sports" in the outdoor mall north of the arena. Second is the box office of the jobbing.com arena -- the hockey arenal for the Phoenix Coyotes which is just north of the football stadium and part of the same big complex.

Haha. Or, you spent $X on a stupid Louis Vuitton bag, so I'm going to the Super Bowl!

Re: Advice for buying SB XLII tickets

Those a really good seats, actually. You'll be happy.

There are stories of bad stuff happening with ebay, but it's all risk/reward. I always think the brokers who have very high feedback numbers and who have sold big ticket items in the past have the most to lose -- one negative feedback that says "did not deliver super bowl tickets" is not something they can really afford.

Do your homework on ebay. Find out how the person got their tickets. If they say they are a Cardinals season ticket holder that was picked in the lottery, ask them to e-mail you a copy of the invoice with their name on it. If they say they were picked in the NFL lottery, ask for the letter they received.

how about section 104, row 18? Is that a decent view?

Re: Advice for buying SB XLII tickets

Let me preface this by saying that no objective person would say those are not good seats. In fact, for a super bowl, I think most would say those are awesome seats. They are lower level, goal line seats.

I also want to add the caveat that seat preference is a highly personal thing.

I sat once in basically the same seats -- other side of the stadium and one section closer to the center about 25 rows back. For the parts of the game where the action is close to your end zone, those are absolutely awesome seats.

All that said, during parts of the game I couldn't tell what was going on on the other side of the field. You also have no hope of seeing whether a field goal attempt at the near goal is good or not. It can be 20 yards wide and you wouldn't know.

Again, it's personal preference, but I actually like to be up higher. Being close is awesome, but for me I prefer the bird's eye view. It's all preference, though. If someone offered me those tickets for the super bowl, I'd likely wet my pants.

Thats kind of what I was thinking by looking at the seating charts. Oh well I can't complain I got tickets!:rocker:

Re: Who is going to the big game???

How about the drive coming in from the west on Route 8 from San Diego? Anything to be aware of? Recommendations? I'll be there with AStack75 (sec. 416 row 13), lodging in Yuma Saturday and Sunday nights.

Same here....let me know what you hear about the drive across the desert.

We are staying in SD Fri night - Tempe Sat night - driving all the way back to SD after the game and flying back Mon Noon.

Anybody know how long to allow from Tempe > Stadium on Gameday?

I've driven from Phoenix to San Diego several times. Basically, it goes like this. From Phoenix, you drive about 30 minutes on the I-10. This is a straight easy shot on a major highway. From there, you get on to the 85, which is not an interstate. It's basically a road that connects two major interstates -- the I-10 and the I-8. It's about 35 miles, mostly 4 lane (two in each direction) and 2 lane in places. It's pretty easy. You drive by a prison, so don't pick up hitchikers.

You then get to a foresaken place called Gila Bend. Get gas.

Gila Bend is where the 85 links up with I-8, which is the highway that goes all the way to the San Diego airport. For about 200 miles, the I-8 is a straight, easy, usually uncongested interstate, with only two towns of any note. You go through Yuma (after passing the largest R-V lot in the world) and cross the border and go through some very neat sand dunes in the California desert. You then hit a town called El Centro, which is in the middle of the California desert. Large military presence. Good place to stop for gas and food. For about 50 miles on either side of Yuma, you're extremely close to the border, so there is a border patrol presence all around. They set up random checks where they basically close down the highway and stop everyone passing through. There is also an agricultural inspection station in California that, if open, can slow you down.

After about 200 miles on I-8, you begin a very sharp climb up into the mountains. There is pretty much nothing along this route, except a native american casino/hotel at the peak of the san andreas divide. In my view, this is a bit of a scary drive at night. But then I'm probably being a bit of a pu**y about this, and many people I know have done it. Just be safe. There's a place called Pine Valley up high in the mountains where you can get gas and a good $5 cheeseburger.

You'll be in the mountains for an hour or so. Once you come down out of the mountains, you're basically in San Diego. You'll pass SDSU and Qualcom Stadium. Next stop is the airport.

Re: Who is going to the big game???

Patsfaninaz,

How about Los Angeles to Phoenix. Just for reference (I'm not going), how is that drive? Better or worse than San Diego?

Pretty much the same. 400 miles. One highway. Mountains near the coast. Not much in between. Palm Springs.

I-10 gets more congested than I-8, so there's more traffic to contend with. And, once you get close to L.A., the I-10 gets very congested and you're dealing with L.A. traffic, which can be brutal of course.
