"The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money"

    - Margaret Thatcher -

A few days ago she said this:

Christine Lagarde: Greeks can help themselves out of the crisis by 'paying their tax' - Telegraph

Now today we find out this:

Anger over Christine Lagarde's tax-free salary

It was called her "Let them eat cake" moment. Now Greece will be saying: "Make her pay tax".

The IMF chief Christine Lagarde was accused of hypocrisy yesterday after it emerged that she pays no income tax – just days after blaming the Greeks for causing their financial peril by dodging their own bills.

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund is paid a salary of $467,940 (£298,675), automatically increased every year according to inflation. On top of that she receives an allowance of $83,760 – payable without "justification" – and additional expenses for entertainment, making her total package worth more than the amount received by US President Barack Obama according to reports last night.

Unlike Mr Obama, however, she does not have to pay any tax on this substantial income because of her diplomatic status.

I'm really convinced all politicians basically suck. Not just in the US, but almost everywhere I look/read about.

When I try to think of ways this could change, I get depressed. My faith in public leaders is almost non-existent. Then I ask myself "would I be any different?".

All I can come up with is that I hope I would. I would never want to be a politician.

You need people to run things, but it's an almost impossible task--regardless of political leaning--because of all the interests involved. Imagine if all of us in this forum had to run a country--I think that's pretty much what politicians face. It's an almost impossible task, and I admire those who are good at it. I think you should see it for what it is; humans are awfully complex and individual, and that's the context in which politicians have to function.

I'm surprised Obama never nominated her for a Cabinet position.

Why is it impossible? Is it easy? Of course not, but no one makes these people corrupt. They choose to be corrupt. No one makes them screw the people in favor of special interests, they choose to. Here's this woman making half a million per, tax free, telling other people that they need to pay their taxes. Who pays her salary, or better yet, where does the money to pay her salary come from? Politicians suck. Period. Do as I say, not as I do. Worse, are the losers who carry their bath water.

Because there's a liberal in the White House. Instead of admitting the blindingly obvious fact that he's doing an atrocious job (after promising the world, no less), all of a sudden we hear that "(governing) is an almost impossible task."

PR, who I was responding to, was talking about politicians in general. That said, I don't think Lagarde did anything corrupt, but obviously she is a beneficiary of unfair tax laws.

HD, just speaking for myself, I'm a little offended by the b___h part of your post, since it pretty much links gender to her obviously reprehensible behavior.

Despite 13's double-standard on the subject, as evidenced by his silence in this thread, if misogyny is wrong in one instance, it's got to be wrong in the next. Despite Patters' apparent tolerance, I still have no choice but to speak my mind, or be vulnerable to the charge of applying a double standard.

I have to say our recent go-rounds on the subject have opened my eyes. I now have 99 problems, and b___h is one. I also condemn Jay Z for the original lyric on which the above quip is based.

Obviously it's not my job to police this forum. I am only registering my own discomfort with misogynistic terminology. In order to avoid the accusation of a double standard, I'm going to have to register this discomfort with all such language.

By the same token, Wolfpack, your signature photos are a very thinly veiled repetition of a sexist formula you used to deploy constantly, until you were made to stop. The photos are blatantly your celebration of a loophole that allows you to post the same sexist formula in picture form. I am offended. This does not accord me the ability to alter your signature photos. It just means I am offended. If you have anything to say about misogyny, it'll carry a lot more weight if you knock it off.

Until recently, I was not aware that I had to condemn every instance of misogyny I encounter to avoid an accusation of a "double standard."

However, the scales have of late been removed from my eyes.

"it emerged"...that she pays no taxes? This is hardly news, and it's the same for most all UN workers and ambassadors. Has been for a very long time.

Doesn't make it OK, in fact it's disgusting. But not nearly as disgusting as multi-national corporations that avoid taxes in myriad ways.

I find the Thatcher "socialism" quote irrelevant, and amusingly ironic. It's free market capitalists that have a field day with other people's money - to disastrous results. ... Yay deregulation!!

Ah, Euro austerity... Just another chapter in the great story of privatizing gains and socializing losses.

I think we should begin to charge an access tax to UN members each and every time they walk though the doors of their offices in NYC.

I personally think elitist officals like her avoiding taxes is far worse. Corporations aren't the one's imposing taxes to begin with. They're not the ones who are scolding a citizentry to "pay their tax", when they pay none. They're not the ones spending taxpayer money while asking (aka taxing) for more. It's do as I say, not as I do.

Conversely our huge diplomatic corps throughout the world is extended the same courtesy by the countries that they work in.. they have to pay US taxes.

No. Instead, they're just commanded zero-interest loans from the Federal Reserve System in a hidden, backdoor form of corporate welfare to the tune of trillions of dollars. I don't even need to cover naked short selling, which dwarfs the combined tax revenue of all UN employees 10-fold.

But, misplace your outrage as you see fit. It must be socialists who are to blame, because the Iron Lady said so. The era of deregulation and slimey corporate accounting tricks have nothing to do with this financial disaster.
