WASHINGTON (AFP) - One year after Democrats seized control of Congress, the American public is increasingly losing faith in the party's leaders, according to a new poll published on Wednesday.

Just 31 percent of those questioned said they approved of the Democratic leadership's job performance, down 10 points since February, said the Pew Research Center poll.

But despite that unflattering assessment, 54 percent of Americans say that they are still happy that Democrats ousted Republicans last year from control of the Senate and House of Representatives.

That figure may be a sign that Republican leaders as well as those on the Democratic side are being blamed for gridlock on Capitol Hill, said Andrew Kohut, President of the Pew Research Center.
