I see where the Patriots are bringing in Dante Stallworth for an interview today. I thought the Patriots were all about model citizens, and character guys, and guys that don't do drugs, and..................well, you get the point.

Does it surprise anybody that the New England Patriots are bringing in a player who's reportedly in the Substance Abuse Program? It does me.

Color me leery of this one.

    Thoughts?

The Patriots want guys who WILL behave well.

Bad behavior in the past is a red flag, not a deal-breaker.

Deion Branch was involved in shoplifting. Dillon had all kinds of trouble. But both wound up on the Pats, and were model citizens while there.

i got the impression, when he was with the saints, that he was kinda lazy, but that was his first 2 seasons..things change. he's got talent, and if the price is right, id pull the trigger on a deal with him.

Good points. No doubt Stallworth is talented. Was just reading Adam Shefter, and he was saying the deal could end up being a 1 year deal, where Stallworth would have to keep his nose clean to get a big multi-year contract with somebody.

We could know more very soon.

if it is a 1 year deal for Stallworth to prove himself then I am all for it. It makes too much sense.

Teams are a little leary of Stallworth right now. If Stallworth goes to NE and performs well on a championship caliber team that will raise his stock and profile. If he can get along with BB for a year then it should quash anyone's fears that he's a bad citizen.

If Stallworth gets a big offer from someone else then he should sign it, but if the best that anyone if offering him is a Givens type of deal then he should sign a 1 year deal with NE and then make the big bucks next year.

In the past I would have said that going to NE is a bad idea because NE doesn't feature individual receivers but that hasn't hurt guys like Graham, Branch, Givens, or even Patten in free agency.

"NFL players can enter the substance-abuse program in a variety of ways, including voluntarily. Players also can be entered in the program for failing drug tests or for drug- and alcohol-related law violations away from the field, according to the collective-bargaining agreement."
"Stallworth was a well-liked player in the Eagles' locker room who made some major contributions, particularly in the two postseason games when he caught six passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. During the regular season, he caught 38 passes for 725 yards and five touchdowns. He also missed four games with a hamstring injury, but those were the first games he missed because of injury in the last three seasons."
    http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/sports/16835778.htm

"Meanwhile, there is speculation in league circles that the Eagles have been responsible for putting out the word that Stallworth is in the drug-testing program, in an effort to scare off other potential suitors."http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

First we really don't know the reason Donte's involved in this program to begin with and secondly the fact the Eagles do want him but at a lesser price leads me to believe it's likely they did put this info out while carefully avoiding violating confidentiality,in order to discourage suitors and drive his price down.

And he was well-liked in the locker room-good sign-very important to the Pats.
Until we know how he ended up in this program I'm not too concerned. The hamstring injury gave me a couple of willies though.

I am leery of Stallworth as well. But on a 1 year deal, there's no downside.

I am very lesry of stollworth. Off the field issues, injury concerns but you know what everyone has said they want a deep threat well this guy averaged 18 yards a catch last season. And on a 1 year deal you can cut him whenever he becomes a problem.

One year deal wouldn't hurt. A low 3 yr 12-18 million deal would be great. I think he did get a lazy reputation down in New Orleans but showed some real good tings in Philly. His durability has been an issue over the years.

    2002 13 games 2003 11 games 2004 16*games 2005 16*games 2006 12 games. If we can get 13 or 14 games out of him I'd be happy.

That's great info, thanks for a helpful post. The more I read about Stallworth as a player, the more I like him. (For instance he's reportedly a very good blocker, hard to find in a downfield-type receiver.) Hearing that he's a good locker-room guy is a giant plus. Maybe a candidate for a prove-it deal, one year+club option for additional years at substantial money?

yes, blocking...very good thing to have. with all this talk about recievers, i havent heard much about their blocking abilities. i for one, think we need recievers who can block, and help the running game...everybody should be blocking better. just my thought for the morning:)

I've met Donte a few times at Saints mini-camps. Good guy, always stayed after to sign every autograph, well spoken with the fans, defended Brooks every time a fan said something negative about him (even though I'm sure he knew he sucked, this just shows he is a good team player.) He's always had issues with the hamstring though, since college, so I would love a 1 or 2 year deal to see if he can bring it like he is capable and not have too much money tied up.

Good points! I'm confidant that the Pats will give this it's due diligence, and if they go with a 1yr with protection language in the contract, it'll be a win-win.

I would love this signing. 1-year is fine. This guy had a great season for the Iggles when he was on the field. He is an impact WR that the Pats need. Who knows when CJ will be back if ever?
