With the price of heating oil soaring as winter sets in, more alternatives are becoming available. After 25 years as top strategist for a Canadian power-generation company, engineer Thomas Rainwater is now producing solar panels to heat buildings from sunshine. While Rainwater specializes in big savings for big firms in big buildings, contractors around the country are installing solar panels in new homes and renovating existing houses.

If you dig down say to 8 feet the temp is pretty constantly 55 degrees, does not take all that much technology to heat 55 degree air to 68 degree air.. it is not as complex as people make it out to be. When we lived in Maine, there was a winter for the ages and that year it froze down to 6 feet.

You all may not live to see it but someday Oil will be useless, what we are seeing today is just the beginning, we are now "aware" and that is the first step.

I certainly hope that's true. But the man's name is Rainwater. Kind of ironic no?

This is a great point, I've always liked the idea of using that as a heat/cooling source. It is done fairly easily, just run a series of pipes under the house to a pump somewhere inside. Does anybody know about the cost of putting in that kind of system in new construction versus a normal oil or electric system? What about retrofitting a house?

When I need some heat real cheap, I eat alot of beans, or invest in fiber. This way I not only feed myself, but I also create the methane fuel to warm the area around me.
