Citizens United has opened the gates for multi-national foreign corporations to fund candidates through laundering.

Thanks supreme court, you bunch of corportae pricks!

remember the state of the union when Alito was shown saying "Not True?" after Obama warned of this?

This could be said of any organization that puts out ads.

If it's illegal, then it's illegal.

    Greed is good; greed works.

Why else would you covet a Golden Goose? Because you're greedy for gold, you dolt!

Here’s how it works. Regular dues from American firms to the Chamber can range from $500 to $300,000 or more, depending on their size and industry, and can be used for any purpose deemed necessary by Donohue and the Chamber leadership. For example, the health insurance giant Aetna has reported that it paid $100,000 in annual dues to the Chamber in the past. But for specific advocacy or advertising campaigns, corporations can hide behind the label of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and give additional money. Last year, alongside their regular dues, health insurance companies like Aetna secretly funneled up to $20 million to the Chamber for attack ads aimed at killing health reform (publicly, health insurance executives claimed they supported reform). Last week, Politico reported that News Corporation, the parent company of Fox News, gave an extra $1 million to the Chamber for its election season attack campaign.

    Teachers union to spend $15M
    By: Scott Wong
    October 6, 2010 12:35 PM EDT

The National Education Association, the country’s largest labor union, said Wednesday it will spend $15 million on independent television and radio ads to help re-elect a handful of public-education-minded Democrats facing tough races this fall.

I didn't bring up Aetna, the quote from the article on how they hide the source of money used them as an example. It could be any group.

    Thus the term "FOR EXAMPLE"

No doubt the Chamber is accepting foreign money, and laundering it (to skirt the law) to fund attack ads.

    sad times...

Possible, but unproven. The same could be said from any group that runs ads. If anything illegal is going on, then I hope the perpetrators are held accountable. By the same token, how come no one gets upset over the Teachers union dumping $15 million into political ads? That $15 million is taken from dues, dues which come from teachers salaries, and salaries that are paid for with taxpayer money. So it stand to say that the more tax money the pols give to the union, the more the union can confiscate and use toward ads. Is that not a form of legalized corruption? Why wouldn't a pol toss more money at the unions, to "Save the Children!", when they know it will benefit them with both votes, and political ads. Regardless, anything illegal, should be dealt with harshly. People, and organizations need to be made examples of, so that any possible laundering of foreign funds becomes a no-no in the eyes of all.

I still think you are confusing 'special interest' with 'multi-national special interest'

The entire political buy-in system we have here is sad. It creates a system where the dollar is more important thna the vote. A system where misinformation outweighs information.

But when China is able to buy in, and the Saudis can influence policy, we are screwed.

This has been going on as long as we have been capitalists, but Citizens United has made it LEGAL. And for the time being, untraceable.

thats what this thread is about.

No, it is still not legal for a foreign corporation. What the suit was about was to preserve equal protection for non-media corporations and organizations.

OBAMA: Just this week, we learned that one of the largest groups paying for these ad regularly takes in money from foreign corporations. So groups that receive foreign money are spending huge sums to influence American elections. And they won’t tell you where the money for the ads come from.

So this isn’t just a threat to Democrats. All Republicans should be concerned. Independents should be concerned. This is a threat to our democracy. The American people deserve to know who’s trying to influence their elections. And if we just stand by and allow the special interests to silence anybody who’s got the guts to stand up to them, our country’s going to be a very different place.

To me there is absolutely no doubt that this is a back-door way to get around what are long-standing and legitimate restrictions. This is happening not just because of Citizen’s United, it’s also happening because we have an utterly worthless and feckless Federal Election Commission and an IRS code that needs serious toughening and revamping. We also have a very serious need to have the IRS look at the regulations involving 527s and especially 501(c)(4)s — regulations that are being flouted and abused even as we speak.
