He is atop my big board right now for #17, afraid he may not last that long.

Unfortunately, I don't he will be available at #32, and with some high-caliber juniors dropping out, he might not make it to #17.

Here is what we have to say about him.

Too lean? To me, 260 is 260, being that hefty alone is good enough even if he is 6'5". If he plays with a low pad level and has good lower body strength then his leanness shouldn't be a concern.

Strength (upper or lower) is not his bailiwick, but he is still a youngin' - A real pro workout program should be able to add some muscle to him.

Has BB ever drafted a RS sophomore before?

None early for sure. PK Sam may have sat out a year and played two.
But, he was a late round pick. On top of being a redshirt soph. Smith missed some games because of injury this year 3 or 4 I believe. Physically looks the part. Lack of experience probably means a no.

Tough to tell. The returns of Warren, Bodden and Kaczur are gonne make it real tough for rookies to find spots in the regular rotation. With the defense performing as effectively as it has over the 2nd half of the year with a young cast growing into their roles, it may be worth the time investment on Smith. In BB era there have been very few OLB prospects who fit Smith's mold. I'd pounce if given the chance.

Why is it people act like Kaczur didn't suck even when he was healthy?

Because he didn't. His only flaw at RT is being able to handle speed rushers. With Vollmer owning the RT spot, Kaczurs new home will be at OG. Where he will do very well.

Kaczur sucks compared to Vollmer, but the eagles would've killed to have Kaczur at right tackle. Clay Mathews just molested their tackles. God their tackles suck.

He doesn't suck even compared to Vollmer. He is just slightly above average, and will never be anything more than that. He has trouble with some kinds, in the same way Matt Light has.

I think Smith would be a great fit for us.
He seems to have the intagibles.
Hard worker - tough (plays through pain) - but is he a student of the game?
    Smart guy?

With some strength and technique this guy would be a monster for us.
But again... does he want it bad enough?

He has not shown me that he is dedicated enough to setting a hard edge and making plays in the running game.

BB passed on Mathews for the exact same reasons he will pass on Smith.

1.) Not enough dedication to the run.
2.) Not enough film on him.

I'll concede that. If Kaczur is only playing guard then fine, particularly right guard. As you mentioned I just got tired of watching him get shredded at right tackle by guys like Mathis. IMO the two biggest deals are what the longterm solution is at left tackle and whether or not Mankins is resigned. If Mankins is resigned it instantly elevates the play of the C and RG.

EDIT: I didn't mean to derail a thread about something completely unrelated to it. As mentioned he's a red shirt sophomore and will be a 1st round pick. Does anyone see BB using a 1st rounder on an OLB (something he's never done) when there's only two years of film on him? I don't, but he seems to be the perfect fit physically as an OLB in this system, so he should be a possibility.

I think we passed on Clay Mathews bc he doesn't seem to be a student of the game. But rather plays like a wild animal and can get out of control at times.

Are those reasons a function of lack of experience?
Can you comment on the lack of dedication to stopping the run?
I assume this is coming from watching film on him?
What has he doing? Tip - toeing with blockers instead of engaging, setting the edge, and shedding?
He has some TFL: 10 this year, 19 last year and he missed 3 games this year.

But I don't think a lack of film is a reason not to draft somebody.
A small amount of film showing potential is a good thing.
A ton of bad film is a good thing in that we know now to touch somebody.

But I think if the kid loves football, has desire and shows raw talent - we can teach strength and technique. Both are functions of desire which is not coach able. One thing we've noticed is BB drafting kids who love football and consider it a top priority in life.

From what I saw from him, Smith should have stayed in school. I wouldn't expect him to carry a first round grade for NE, I'd be hard pressed to consider a UDFA grade based on what I saw from him.

What game(s) are you basing that on Box?
