good news if true... why we didn't put more pressure on Pakistan a long time ago seems curious...

What mention was made of Iraq before the 2000 election. I only recall Clinton passing the resolution calling for the overthrow of Saddam's regieme in 1998.

NEM, are you talking about leaving Afghanistan? If so, you think its a good idea to just clear out and leave them to their own devices? You mention the Russians got smart and did just that, and what did that lead to? Oh wait, that's right, it led to the Taliban taking power and allowing Al Qaeda a safe haven to train and plan 9/11! Hmm, sounds like a great plan then! Let's pack it up and leave, especially with AQ trying to reorganize in Pakistan! I mean, come on, concern for the troops is one thing, but you advocate a policy of turn tail and run at the first casualty. If you think we were justified in going into Afghanistan in the first place you have to recognize that we can't now leave them before they can effectively defend themselves.

If you were talking about Iraq I am more understanding of your position and apologize, but if you were talking about Afghanistan I can't understand it.

patsfan I think what NEM was talking about is that fact the Iraq was a major foreign policy problem from the 1991 gulf war on. He would also probably point out that removing Saddam and exerting greater influence in the mideast was an objective of the PNAC, a policy group with a lot of influence in the Bush White House that some people (though not me) think led the administration to lie about WMDs to get into Iraq. To me they are a policy group, not the evil cadre of men pulling the strings behind the scenes that others paint them as.

Saddam should have been taken out during GWI, Bush Sr screwed the pooch on that one.

OK, I was confused, I thought you were talking about Afghanistan not Iraq. I should have known better!:bricks:

Did we ever "pull troops out of there" when they were still needed? I don't think that was the case. I know some units went from there to Iraq, but their mission in Afghanistan was effectively over at that point, right?

Yes, I've read that before, you only posted it about 10,000 times!:D

You consider them an evil group that lied and cheated to achieve their goals, I see them as a neo-con think tank with influence in the administration, and there is nothing wrong with that.
