Rodney was back, that's really nice. Willhite too, he needs all the reps he can get being a rookie missing time.

Yeah, but also notable who did practice.

Rodney Harrison - he has been out a while, and after practicing only twice through camp and the signing of John Lynch, there was a lot of concern that this could be a serious injury. If he is back, that could really stabilize the secondary.

Jason Webster - he was the #1 corner for the first several practices, then went down for three weeks. He would be another big boost to the secondary.

Jonathan Wilhite - his chances of making the regular squad have really taken a hit with a couple weeks out. His best shot is the practice squad at this point, but good that he is back.

Kelley Washington - with the struggles of Chad Jackson and the injury to Sam Aiken, he has a real shot at the #4 WR spot. He really needs some time with the offense - last year he was purely special teams. It would be nice to give him some time in game three.

However, four OL out, two on PUP, two on IR - that is brutal. There has to be a lot of concern here.

A little more from the ProJo, though :

    http://www.beloblog.com/ProJo_Blogs/PatsBlog/2008/08/tuesday-practic.html

"As we were walking off the field, we spotted Neal and Ross were on a separate field being put through some drills....and when we came back into Gillette, saw Brady throwing to an unseen receiver on the turf. He did not appear to be wearing anything on either foot, though he was of course wearing cleats."

    Disable Jersey

The unseen receiver would have to be Welker who gets lost in high grass

Yep. This is why preseason for the best coach in the legue isn't for the fans, nobody has any idea what is going on. For all we know he could have intentionally tanked that preseason game to give the players a kick in the @ss. Or he could have deliberately developed broken plays, or crappy schemes. Or the Pats could just really suck. Anyway you look at it the fans have no idea what is going on at this point and nothing I've seen is any different than preseason any other year. I find it amazing that people who are otherwise very knowledgeable Pats fans are coming out with such panicky comments.

You might have a point about that. I've heard that many coaches around the league are not happy about it.

Did everyone watch BB's press conference at patriots.com? Seriously, watching that and taking various snippets into account, I think he's dealing with SOME deficiencies, but I think our D's front line was actually doing almost exactly what they were told to do in that last game.

I think its fair to say at any given time there were MULTIPLE guys on the field fighting for JOBS. There is no tanking it, there is no deliberate broken plays. The game plan may have been simple to see what the new guys could do athletically(which can be compensated a bit with scheme for the older guys) but thats it. Its still football and no one wants to lose.

My theory is that BB doesn't give a damn about winning or losing these games but he uses them simply to evaluate individual talent. 3 straight passes to CJ Jones etc. isn't exactly gameplanning. Gruden may have been practicing plays and coverages, but I think BB just uses the most basic aspects of the playbook to tryout those on the bubble. He expects his players to have the playbook down pat, and that is what practice is for while preseason games are for figuring out what tools he has at his disposal when the season starts and where and when he can use them. Again, I have no idea, but I certainly don't care whether the Pats win a preseason game with Matt Gutierrez taking snaps from Dan Connelly and throwing to CJ Jones, and I really doubt BB does either. He's the type of mind that doesn't get caught up in being competitive at the cost of future success, especially when it doesn't matter.

I agree it is all part of Belichick's plan. Not having to do an injury report until the regular season, he is having fun with this.

Look no further than last week when he went for 2 points vs taking the 1 point and sending the game into overtime.

    No Jersey Selected

In that situation, you ALWAYS go for two points and try to end the game. It's pre-season, and only an idiot would go for a tie to send a game into overtime and risk injuries. If you win, great. If you miss, then you at least got to see those players in that sort of a situation. Not only how they executed, but how they reacted afterwards. There is more to evelauate during the pre-season than simply which players execute the best. That part is important, but there are many other areas, such as player discipline that also need to be observed.

    Respects,

Then welcome to the New England Patriots.
This is obviously your first season as a fan.
You will really enjoy watching them.
They are a great team, and they win a lot.

For those who have followed the team before this pre-season, you have already gained a picture of Belichick and Brady. They hate to lose. At anything. They are total 'throw up in your mouth a little bit' losers, as Parcells used to say.

Brady is the guy who audibled to a 40-yard pass to Moss, up by 30 points.
Brady is the guy who said 'on offense, our goal is to score. It's the job of the other guys to try to stop us.'

Anyone who has watched the team before this year would understand that Belichick would not draw up 'a broken play.' They may not game plan, but they definitely want to attack the Tampa Two, since they see it a bit.

On cue come the mad scientist posts.

Nevermind these are the same posts we heard Super Bowl week or that it really makes no sense to ever have Brady fake an injury and makes even less sense in the preseason.

Clearly BB is again just messing with the whole NFL.

If you read closely, it says he was absent for the media portion. The entire practice is no open to the media.

Nice ironic post. Someone who is clearly so familiar with the "win at anything" mentality of BB would probably know that the Pats haven't had a winning record in the preseason since 2003 and that BB doesn't give a damn about the outcome of the games. Like you said, welcome to the New England Patriots.

I didn't agree then, nor do I agree now that BB is orchestrating a fake Brady injury. But I haven't seen any reason to panic like everyone seems to love to do around here. If he was spotted passing with nothing on his foot I think it's safe to say that whatever he has isn't catastrophic.
