ADAMJT13 - Four 7th ROUND COMP PICKS

Do you mean Nate Byham from Pitt, or someone else named Bynum from another school?

That was my bad. Must have had Laker highlights in the background while I was posting.

Why not? If they're going to have 12+ picks, might as well push one into 2011. . . .

Exactly. Gotta take 4 picks in the 7th round at minimum. Before the injury, Schofield was a 3rd-5th round guy. I thought he was an interesting conversion project to SILB. Draft him with one of the gazillion late picks, let him sit a year to rehab and study, then see if he can earn a spot in 2011.

Hmmm. Interesting. Morton should be a third color though, since he had the skills (I think he's still in the league). He was a 7th rounder due to character question marks.

Really? I never heard that, I thought he just had an underwhelming college career. Wasn't a combine invitee, fwiw.

QB
Tim Hiller, Western Michigan
Joe Webb, UAB

RB
Javarris James, Miami
Stafon Johnson, USC

TE
Scott Sicko, New Hampshire

ILB
Ryan Reynolds, Oklahoma
Travis Goethel, Arizona State

P
Brent Bowden, Virginia Tech

Using these rankings, here's my list of 6-7th rounders - UDFA players that I'd like to bring in with all of our comp picks:

Clifton Geathers - think he goes higher than 7th round, but currently only the 231st ranked prospect in the draft. Could be a great developmental 34 end with his freakish height. Surprisingly quick and coordinated for his size (6'8 #300+).

Patrick Stoudamire - good looking corner prospect. Very underrated, with good fluidity, instincts, and physicality. Average height, but good bulk, strength, and speed. Played against lower competition, but is technically sound.

Danny Batten - again, I think he goes higher, but an absolute steal at this point. Originally a DE, but played ILB at Texas vs Nation, and could offer great versatility. High effort guy; a really impressive player eerily reminiscent of Bruschi.

Jim Dray - fantastic blocker. A few injury concerns. May not be the best athlete in the world and wouldn't catch a lot of passes--could be a tip-off on running formations. Nonetheless, blocks like a third tackle.

Brandon Deaderick - played next to Cody on the Alabama line, and always caught my eye when I scouted the big guy. Extremely stout against the run, and that was before he added 20 pounds for the combine. Good developmental 34 end who actually played the position in college.

Deji Karim - Ray Rice clone. My favorite prospect on this list, by far, Karim reminds me of Rice and MJD. He's short (5'8 or 5'9, depending on who you believe) but at #210 is very thickly built and has impressive power. Reportedly running in the 4.3s and jumping over 40 inches in the vertical while testing for his pro day. Great vision, instant acceleration, good hands, etc. He gives effort as a blocker, but needs to refine his technique. Perfect Faulk understudy.

J'Marcus Webb - huge small-school OT with quick feet and shocking athleticism for a big guy. Not generating a lot of hype, which coupled with his transfer from a major program makes me a bit wary, but all the physical tools are there for him to be a franchise left tackle.

Armanti Edwards - Julian Edelman clone, but with better throwing skills. Amazing stats. For the record, I called Edelman in the seventh last year. It was definitely a blind squirrel sort of situation.

Kevin Matthews - Clay Matthews' brother, Kevin is a solid center/guard developmental prospect. Might lack a little athleticism, but is very sound and has great football bloodlines.

Travis Ivey - can never have too many big men on the line. He's a massive nose-tackle and a likely PS candidate. Let's keep the pipeline going.

Mike Brandtner - really underrated directional punter. Never had a punt blocked. Drops an inordinate amount of kicks inside the 10, and often times kicks so his coverage arrives exactly when the ball does.

Keiland Williams - what's up with LSU running backs? Poor guys can't stay healthy. Regardless, Williams is a versatile runner/blocker/receiver who runs hard and has fantastic agility for a big back, though he lacks top-end speed.

LaMarcus Coker - drug issues got him kicked off the Tennessee team, but he appears to have owned up to his mistakes and turned things around. Extremely fast (timed in the 4.2s at school and all star games), and appears to have return and receiving skills.

Wow, that's a long list. I think I'll stop here and go do something productive. I get way too involved in the draft. :singing:

Great list, Reamer. I'm going to need to study more of the later-round prospects now. It wouldn't surprise to see a Punter being taken with one of the comps.

And I agree with Patchick: Bill has had better luck drafting the inexperienced athletes, instead of the experienced - but not extremely productive - stiffs, in the 7th round.

Mmm...sounds like good advice: when dealing with comp picks, it's better to draft superior athleticism - or superior, All-American-style production - than it is to draft inferior athleticism + mediocre production.

QB/WR Armanti Edwards
RB Deji Karim
DE/OLB Danny Batten
CB Patrick Stoudamire

These four small school prospects may not all make it to rounds 6-7, but IMO they all have qualities that fit the Pats profile. I'm hopeful NE will show some interest in them via workouts and visits.

Another prospect happens to be my favorite CB in the draft -- Walter Thurmond. He's not an unknown sleeper, as he would've been highly ranked had he not suffered a major knee injury. He's currently rehabbing and won't work out at his Pro Day. Word is, he'll be ready to run in April -- which is very late in the evaluation process, possibly dropping him even further into the later rounds. Obviously he needs to time fast enough to play the position -- but play-he-can. He's the former teammate of my favorite player in last year's draft -- Patrick Chung. The type of player BB may take earlier than most teams (4th?).

Wow, we picked all the same guys. Nice.

Agree with you on Walter Thurmond. I mentioned in the thread about McCourty that I prefer Thurmond to any other developmental corners, but I figured he would go in the 4th or 5th, and thus wouldn't be available when our comp picks kick in.

Also, Captain Stone, thanks for the shout out. I really enjoying scouting small school guys, so I'm glad you found the list useful. Have fun doing your own research, as well. Cheers!

Trindon Holliday - KR - I know they list him as a WR, but this kid is just electric as a KR. And his size (5'5") helps him avoid many tackles.
Wouldn't be surprised if one of these picks is a return specialist. Wouldn't be terribly surprised to see Brandon James' name called, either.

I would be. When was the last time BB drafted a player with the expectation that he would be solely a return man?

For some reason, BB is perfectly willing to bring in players just to play STs (in 2008 he had seven or eight players on the 45-man roster who almost exclusively played STs), but isn't willing to bring in a Josh Cribbs-like player to be a KR/PR.

I would say Bethel Johnson qualifies. He came in as a KR and gunner, and added PR later. Maybe BB had hopes he could develop into a passable WR, but I think he was drafted where he was to be a difference-maker on STs.

I can't see Holliday being drafted. But I can see Arenas.

FWIW, here are all the players the Pats have drafted in the 7th since 2004, categorized by the reason they were still available so late. The names in red were major-conference players experienced at their positions but lacking in physical attributes and skills. The names in blue were shoot-the-moon prospects with great athletic potential but no high level experience at their prospective positions.

Christian Morton
Matt Cassel
Andy Stokes

Willie Andrews
Oscar Lua
Mike Elgin

Julian Edelman
Darryl Richard

From that small sample, the "blue" approach looks pretty darned good.

I think Cassel and Lua fall into a category of backups behind All Americans in premiere programs. With the thought that just because they didn't get the reps over great college players doesn't mean they can't develop into solid pros. Lua just didn't have the physical tools to make the transition, where Cassel did.

This is a question for the draft geeks out there. Are there any backups to elite talent at schools like AL, TX, and USC that would be good pro prospects for the Pats?

I'd like to get 4 players with our top 4 picks. Then, draft the boom/bust type. Who cares it 5 can't find Rhode Island on the map and make it to training camp, as long as 1-2 turn out to be players.
Exact-a-mundo!

RBs Upchurch of Alabama and Miller of Fresno St. come immediately to mind. Also TEs Epps from Miami and Shuler of Penn St.

Except Lua was a full-time starter as a junior at USC before the phenom arrived, and saw a lot of reps in 2 other seasons, too. Plenty of film on him against high-level competition.

I still don't get what the pats saw in Lua with Brandon Siler still on the board

IIRC, Epps injured a knee just before their bowl game the year before last, though I don't think he missed any games this season because of it. If Bill hasn't addressed TE during the draft, I can see somebody like Epps being considered with one of the comps, esp. if he's looking for a TE who's more of a pass-catcher.

This is great
we can use 2 on ILB and hopefully find another for our 4th ILB spot.

Siler went undrafted, correct? Or did he get drafted late in the 7th? I guess the Pats saw in him exactly what the other 31 teams saw in him.
