Aaron Dobson, where are you ?

After a massive game against the Steelers, and then a ho-hum 4 catch 38 yard game against the Panthers (big catch in the final drive), he was absolutely invisible in a 300 yard game for Brady. Has he hit the Rookie wall, or has Edelman gone back to being Brady's #2 or #3 favorite target ?

You must have missed the comments by McDaniels that said they went with the "Hot Hands". Dobson wasn't getting open early while Thompkins was. It's all about the match-ups. This was mentioned in the Post game thread.

No rookie wall, we just have the luxury of 2 stud rookies that have a few different skills. Thompkins is that quick guy who can be great in the shorter, quick passing game. Dobson is the big deep man on this team. We switched the game plan a little and went with KT. The important thing is we are getting production for 2 rooks in big games. They will need to really shine in jan and possibly feb.

This was magnified due to Dobson's skill set being best used when Brady is actually able to buy a little time in the pocket, and since Brady had to get rid of the ball very quickly on Sunday night, they felt that going to Thompkins in the second half was the better choice for the quick releases. It is good to see Thompkins continuing to get more looks in that role this year, and he seems to be developing a nice sense of comfort with Brady. Just when you think it's one guy--another steps in and draws more targets and attention.

In terms of trying to project the WR depth chart, that is going to be extremely difficult to do for this 2013 season. There are some games where Dobson has received more snaps, and Thompkins has been benched or limited; and vice versa. The same goes with Edelman, as he has sometimes been a WR3-4, and sometimes he seems to be getting Tom's attention as his first read. Danny Amendola would be another prime example, as he was extremely effective with his physical blocking game on Sunday night, allowing Edelman to be the one who received more targets and attention.

It's going to change a lot depending on their specific gameplanning and grouping, but who really cares? It's currently allowing us a lot of versatility to take advantage of matchups vs the opponent.

Agreed. And that's a good thing. I remember the clip of BB talking about how easy it was to shut down the Pats offense (take away welker, double Moss) back in the day. The most difficult offense to defend is one that is unpredictable. Throw in a good running game (without the fumbles) and the Pats can kill you every which way.

I think they felt given the wind the intermediate passing game was the best plan and in that situation Thompkins, Edelman and Amendola are better fits then Dobson.

I'm not going to harp on this, but you have to understand play design, and complementary routes.
You cannot only run certain routes with certain players. Gronk and Edelman are capable of getting deep. The coverage dictated that was the best place to throw the ball, not the play call.

Dude, do you expect pats to score a touchdown every drive? You can't possibly expect to call a perfect call. Brady was killing the panthers leading up to that 3rd and 1 call. So it wasn't that crazy.
