Someone brought up the uncapped season in another thread, led to me thinking that 2009 will be an interesting offseason in which a lot of players might take 1 year "prove it" deals to delay their big payday to 2010. The Pats would be a natural fit for a lot of talent looking for these 1 year type deals.

Which gives the Patriots yet another reason to hope they can sustain their continued excellence in Brady's absence, and stay one of the premiere locations for free agents (granted, the prospect of a healthy Brady in 09 is good enough). But either way, something to keep in mind going forward...

There will be some money to spread around after Seymour's bloated contract expires, and Rodney and Tedy retire.

Well...there has been little talk of the CBA since Upshaw's death...so I would expect there to be some as there is a power struggle in the NFLPA..yes, Upshaw's right hand men will take over..but theer are others who wish to go in other directions..I believe there are meetings in November or some deadlines in that area..I still have hope they will find a way back to the CBA and avoid uncapped years..

Another nice thing about 1 year contracts is that there is the possibility of receiving compensatory draft picks when they leave as free agents and sign on other teams.

As one things relates to another....not hijacking but hear me out:
I am in the camp of wanting Garcia to be traded for yesterday. With more available FAs it could make for fewer(but possibly higher)draft picks making the team...so with that thought maybe we can afford to trade a pick? And alot of our own FAs will be in the same boat....the danger is we could have total rebuild coming in 2010---potentially risking 5-10 starters.

It is hijacking and there is no guarantee we get to the uncapped season as cooler heads may yet prevail. Garcia wasn't traded for yesterday, or today nor will be be tomorrow...

Sorry, my point was relating available FAs to draft picks. No ill will.

1.) What type of free agent is going to see a 1-year deal in 2009??

Not a top echelon one. Those are still going to get long-term deals in 2009.

Why would a player wait until 2010 to get his big payday when he can get in 2009 and NOT take the injury risk playing in 2009 on a one-year deal? If a player on a one-year deal plays well in 2009, what would prevent the Pats from placing the franchise tag on him in 2010.

Free-agent class of 2009 appears mighty impressive

look at how many players listed have signed extensions since the article came out in May, 2008.

Please note that teams can still use the franchise tag in 2009.

Isn't there a place in teh uncapped years when 2 franchised players are allowed?? I can not recall all the poisin pills and stipulations from an uncapped year....
Also do you know when is teh next critical date..or NFL owners meeting?? (when teh CBA can be talked about?) I kept thinking in early November...but??

Good point. This could really benefit good teams as it is easier to showcase your talents surrounded by good talent than by lesser talent.

BTW, thank you so much for starting a football thread. It's a pleasure to read something that isn't yet another I'm-only-a-fan-when-then-win-every-game-and-I-demand-they-win-every-game btchfest.

No, the top echelon will obvioulsy still write their own tickets. It will be the players who showed potential but didn't quite flash, the guys who have talent but not buzz, the good ones who cannot get the mega contract now but see a chance for big money (or at least bigger money) in an uncapped year.

I may seem a bit dumb or abit out of it but why no cap in 2010, is this just a one year thing? Tell me more!

Re: A side plot to consider w the 2010 uncapped season...

A guy like Donte Stallworth, worked for him in 07. He may not have been top echelon, but he was close. He had some baggage, didn't think he could get market value for his services, signed with us for a prove it deal and left getting (arguably) overpaid by the Browns.

We're only more likely to see this kind of thing going into 09 - and with more teams than just the Pats. They'll be more Donte Stallworths in the 09 offseason.

My feelings exactly. There will be talent out there that won't feel its getting what it could be getting, and will see that it'll get more in 2010 if they have a really impressive 2009 season. (see above, like Stallworth did)

I just hope to god they keep a cap... I don't want the NFL turning into the craphole known as the MLB.
