Albert Breer reported that teams have been told that the 2014 cap will be $126.3 million. Actual number to be finalized late February/early March.

    Projected NFL cap 126,300,000
    2013 adjustments
Negative means that the player reached a NTLBE incentive
Positive means that the player did not reach a LTBE incentive or lost their grievance
    Amendola's per-game roster bonus in 2013 -31,250
    Talib's per-game roster bonus in 2013 -46,951
Svitek's per game roster bonus -130,000
    Edelman's receptions -250,000
    Hooman's playing time incentive -370,000
    Talib's Pro Bowl Bonus -500,000
    Mayo's per-game roster bonus 343,750
    Kelly's per-game roster bonus 312,500
    Mayo Pro Bowl 300,000
    Ninkovich Pro Bowl 200,000
    Slater Pro Bowl 300,000
    Hernandez losing workout grievance 232,800
Hernandez losing guaranteed salary grievance 984,800
    Total adjustments - 1,345,649
    2013 carryover - 4,160,574
Other possible adjustment - Svitek's 500K playing time incentive. Unknown incentives

NFL CAP + Total adjustments+2013 carryover = 2014 adjusted cap number of 131,806,223

Right now, I have the Patriots 2014 cap commitments as $122,058,131
I expect the following to happen which will increase that number
    Signing Forston 75,000
Signing the other 7 practice squad players $0
Tendering Danny Aiken at the lowest RFA tender level 894,000
    McCourty's escalator 3,000,000
    Amendola's per-game roster bonus in 2014 31250
    Ninkovich's 2014 playing time incentive 250000
Other possible changes to cap commitments - Ridley could play in a high percentage of snaps the last two games earning a 600K salary increase for 2014. McCourty may not have increased his 2014 escalator by $3 million.

After the five occur, the cap commitment total is 126,350,250

2014 adjusted cap number of 131,806,223 minus cap commitment of $126,350,250 equals 5,455,973 in cap space with 62 signed or tendered players.

As bad as that sounds, if I read Miguel's 2014 cap page correctly we can add $13.8M to that available cap space by cutting :

Vince (7.5M) hopefuly resigned for less if healthy.
    Connelly (2.5M)
    Sopoaga (2M)
    Gregory (1.8M)

which would put us at a more workable 19.3. Cutting Kelly would put us at 21M under. But with no Vince & Kelly (they're the only cuts from above I care about) and no Talib, Edelman or Spikes (UFA).

They have some work to do and aren't overflowing in cap space but there is some maneuverability.

Do you foresee us receiving any cap space for Hernandez and Fanene? Hernandez has a $7.5m cap hit in 2014 correct?

330lb man with a torn achilles.

Have you seen him play since? How can you make the determination you made with such certitude?

Based on seeing him on the sidelines Sunday....I would guess he is currently closer to 380 or so.

Thats a lot of weight to put on a repaired Achilles at what 32-33 years old?

Yes way....he wasn't even close to being one of the top DTs in the league this year. He got pushed around by Vlad Ducasse who was then benched by the Jets because he got pushed around by everyone else.

He's going to be 33 years old next season coming off a torn achilles which is one of the worst injuries you can have for a overweight lineman.

You're living in the past. There is no way they pay him that 7.5 million.

If Vince Wilfork were a 33 year old free agent (from some other team) coming off a ruptured achilles, would you be happy the team signed him and paid him $7.5 million?

    No chance.

Dead money: 9 mill in offensive skill players this year, 8mill next year and sure to climb.

For those wondering why bill has always been hesitant to spend on skill positions, there you have it.

The likelihood of Wilfork being worth the $8M of new money he is contracted for in 2014 is extremely slim.

Wilfork should be considered like a free agent. For all intents and purposes, his old contract is null and void. We can speculate on what the patriots or another team might pay Wilfork.

Folks don't like the word "cut". In the end, Wilfork will be cut rather than being paid $8M. We all hope that there are other options.

Give BB credit though, he won't hang onto somebody to prove a point. Willingly to cut his losses and take the dead money rather than waste a roster spot. I still think we shoulda hung onto Lloyd but, oh well. Don't know his personality may have not been worth the trouble.

IMHO, Connolly and Gregory are going nowhere. If they were to be cut, it would be in camp. We need the two veterans, even if they are backups in 2014.

However, I agree that we have reasonable cap space to work with. Miguel's latest post has us at $7.5M. Wilfork, Kelly and Sopoaga total $12 M. I would add Adrian Wilson at $1.5M to bring the total to your same $21M.

My guess is that one of the veteran DT's will be on the squad (joining the 3 three kids).

Sorry, but you can't have the second highest player on your team be a huge question mark for the season. Achilles tendon tears are tough to come back from with players younger and lighter than Wilfork. Wilfork doesn't look to have controlled his diet while he has been immobile. Not only is he going to have to spend the offseason rehabbing, but he will need to shed about 30-50 lbs.

Unless Wilfork is willing to restructure in the Patriots' favor, the Pats may be forced to cut him.

Agreed. To be honest, I felt that the Pats would attempt to renego his deal regardless of his health. 32 year old DT making $7.5m is too much money.
