Has Matt Cassel actually SIGNED his franchise agreement to date?

And while I'm at it, please answer the following one too. Is it true, as I think it is, that until Cassel ACTUALLY SIGNS the agreement that the $14+MM in cap expense DOESN'T actually get assigned to the Pats. Its just sort of out there in limbo.

It has always been my sneaking suspicion that Cassel won't actually sign the deal until some trade has been worked out or the league calls him on it. That way the Pats will have some cap room to make some moves (hopefully for a CB or S) in early FA. There seems to be a number of "former" high priced guys that will be out there this March. I'd like to see the Pats get one or two.

BTW- Now that I'm in the questioning mode. How much cap room do the Pats currently have (A) if Cassel counts, or (B) if he doesn't.

    Well can you help me.

While I'm no GM... yes, I believe Cassel signed the franchise agreement the day after it was tendered.

Thinking about that, I only remember that he had faxed in a letter of intent to sign it. But I doubt that would escape the notice of the league. It's likely been signed.

I seem to remember him signing the franchise offer.
At this time i think the pats (just a rough guess) are about 4-5 million under.

    From the CBA:
"For Transition Players and Franchise Players, the tender will be included in Team Salary when made (my emphasis added) until the player is signed, the tender is withdrawn, the Team’s rights are relinquished, or the Tuesday following the tenth game of the regular season (if the player is unsigned).

Re: a quick question for all the GMs out there

At the Combine's press conference today, Pioli was asked if Cassel had signed the tender and he said he didn't believe he signed yet.

Pioli also said, you can't trade for a player that's not signed under contract.

how many GMs visit this place?

    I mean, honestly?

Most of us are simply in fantasy land here.

I'm not saying that it is a bad thing either way.

    Just saying...

Re: a quick question for all the GMs out there

As Miguel noted, it is irrelevant whether Cassel has signed or not; the cap room's not there.

The only fundamental difference it makes is that if he hasn't signed the tender as of the day free agency begins, a team can sign him to a "hostile" offer sheet if it is willing to cough up its next two firsts for him, and that's only if the letter of acceptance doesn't render that option moot.

Re: a quick question for all the GMs out there

it was reported that he immediately (i.e., within a day or so) "faxed back" the agreement to the Pats...I'm assuming that means he faxed a signed copy with the original to follow.

I'm a GM...oops, no...that's when i think i'm a car. When i think i'm an NFL honcho, i'm an owner. Yessiree, that's what i am, an NFL owner who drives a GM car.

Anyway, that's my story and i'm sticking to it!

    That was posted February 7.

Mr. Gasper reported on February 9:

So it's at least possible that Pioli is right.

Re: a quick question for all the GMs out there

On the NFL's own website, they list Cassel as being re-signed/franchised with the one-year tender offer as of February 9th.

    NFL Transactions

I realize nfl.com offers opinions and analysis, but I'd have to think their list of transactions would be about as 'official' as you can get.

I wouldn't put it past them to have a mistake, though, as they screwed up their own draft order list.

    It's not. Not even close.

The only true official one out there is Pro Football Weekly's, except that they haven't updated it in a few weeks (they usually do it every other day or so):

So we have incomplete versus inaccurate; not so sure which one I should put more faith in.
