The Republicans had a chance to claim the mantle of fiscal responsibility, but instead used it for only political reasons. The Democrats meanwhile have always been fiscally quite good -- from Roosevelt who protected the common man from the worst of the Depression, to JFK who cut taxes, to Clinton who cut deficits. Why would anyone trust the Republicans? All they do is cut taxes and spend, spend, spend. At least if the Democrats do it, it will benefit the average family and they won't have to hope some of it trickles down from the wealthy.

Nice graph, but incredibly deceiving. The executive branch cannot spend a dime without the approval of congress.

    Congress controls the purse strings.

Get a graph of which party controlled congress over those years for a more accurate picture that speaks a thousand words.

Easy answer, the repubs. Rememeber Gingrich's "contract on America". Well yes, it worked, America is dead.
