I picked up the Sporting News NFL Preview yesterday.

They have the Patriots picked to win the Super Bowl.:rocker: But, they have them playing the Cowboys.

Last I saw of the cowboys they gave away a playoff game to the Seahawks. Romo had an awful last 4 games of the regular season and was bad in the playoff game.

So, can anyone figure out why they would pick the Cowboys as NFC champs? What did they do to improve so much?

Maybe Carrie Underwood solved Romo's inability to handle a snap?

I look @ that play and relate it to the TB fumble on the punt against Denver a couple of years ago. It was something that the football gods made happen. Romo may of sucked, but they should of won that game. There is alot of teams bunched up at the top of the NFC, and a few breaks one way or another is all it could take a team like the 'Boys to make it all the way.

Well you have to pick someone from the NFC. I'm not sure who I'd pick but the Cowboys probably have as good a chance as any of them.

That was my prediction last year :D Now, while I am sticking with the Patriots for this season, I just can't bring myself to go with Dallas again... But I can't go with Chicago either... or Seattle... or Philly...

I guess that leaves me with New Orleans...

I haven't had a chance to read the write up on the Cowboys but will sometime this weekend. Maybe then I can figure out where they are coming from.

But for conversation here, it seemed as if the DC's had Romo figured out during the last quarter of the season. If your going to pick a NFC champion, shouldn't it be a team that improved toward the end of the year?

It beats the writers picking Carolina for the 40th year.

I would agree it's not like they are a clear favorite, just that they showed some signs of positive things last year. Their star receiver led the league in touchdowns despite playing through a broken hand and that's now healed, and they improved their secondary, pass rush, and offensive lines, which were the three biggest weaknesses.

Not thrilled with Wade Phillips as a head coach, but it's not like there is an overwhelming Belichick-level coach in the conference. So basically as Romo goes so will this team, just needs to not be forced to do so much as he was in the Philly and New Orleans games and they should be fine, and he is thankfully off the PAT team now.

And as far as all the jokes along with that, he might not have been able to hold that snap, but he was able to hold a lead against The Colts, which is more than some quarterbacks could say last year...

Picking the Cowboys to be NFC champs this season is a bit of a stretch to me, given that they are in a transition year with a new head coach.

How does a quarterback "hold the lead?" They scored 34 damn points.

I think its a pretty good pick for the NFC because Dallas probably has more balance on both sides of the ball than most of the top teams I can think of in the NFC take a look at Chicago's offense lost best running back in my opinion and you have Rex Grossman enough said. New Orleans has a good offense defense has to get better and Seattle has to improve on both offense and defense. You can probably put the Eagles in that mix also and I don't believe the Giants are even a playoff team with the players they lost especially Tiki.

I think the Saints have the best shot of repping the NFC
in the SB, not the Cow boys.
I doubt if the Bears make it back.
Seattle might have a shot, though.
But I definitely agree that the PAts will be there and they will win.

The Cowboys are as good a team as any from the NFC. There isn't a single team in the NFC that would be in the top 5 of the AFC (NE, SD, Indy, Balt, & Denver). The best ones in the NFC are equal to the likes of Cinci and Jax, good enough to beat you on a given Sunday, but it would be an upset. However if I were forced to make a choice, then I'd say NO would be my pick with Dallas #2.

I am going to sort of agree, and sort of disagree with you on this one.

First off, Denver, are you kidding me? They lost 2 out of their last 6 games last year, beating a bad Cardinals team and a dysfunctional Bengals jail yard. And two of those 4 losses were against NFC teams, so I have to vehemently disagree with you on that one. Cutler showed potential and they have great corners, but just because they have been able to beat an elite team (Patriots) these past couple years does not make them an elite team.

Baltimore has an incredible defense, but McNair is washed up and was totally exposed in that playoff game verse The Colts, and I've just never been a McGahee guy so I don't buy into that one.

San Diego is down both coordinators and their head coach, I don't expect them to put up and shut down the same amount of points as they did last year on O and D.

At this point in the league I think it's New England and Indy are the best two teams, and then there is just sorta everyone else. I think the three things that win for you in this league are QB, Coach, and Defense, and if you ran down a 1-10 ranking on those 3 categories, added them up, it'd be those two teams and then just sorta everyone else.

People still view the Cowboys as America's team. As soon as they show the slightest sign of life the national media is all over them hyping them out the wazoo. And I'm not trying to play the whole "the media favors them, it's so unfair card." I'm not complaining I'm just saying that from my experience from watching ESPN and other national sports news sources the really gravitate towards the Cowboys. Aren't the Cowboys like the only team in the NFL with their own personal correspondent on ESPN (Ed Werder is his name, I believe.)

The NFC is such a crapshoot of suck you can pick just about anyone. You might as go with the Cowboys and sell a lot of issues.

Yes, those teams have flaws, but every NFC team has worse flaws. If need be, we can break it into 3 tiers:

    Tier 1: NE and Indy
    Tier 2: SD, Denver, Baltimore
Tier 3: NO, Chicago, Cincy, Jax, Dallas, Seattle, etc.

Maybe NO can crack Tier 2, and maybe SD can crack Tier 1 on sheer talent alone. I think Baltimore is pretty bad compared to NE and Indy yet I'd probably pick them to win the NFC. Denver requires projection with a new RB, TE, and Cutler having gotten his feet wet last year, and I'd probably have them winning the NFC too.

I guess you go 2-1 against Tier's 1 and 2 the last two years, versus the Patriots going 1-7 and you don't see them in that same light. New England and Indy coming to town I say "Oh crap, we have to play these guys", where as all the teams you have in 2 and 3 I have bunched together and view it as a good chance to prove yourself verse a solid team.

eh, we see things a little differently. it is what it is. the Cowboys managed to beat Indy last year, so you definitely have a different perspective.

as for your little jab, the Patriots have had a relatively poor couple of years and have played 5 playoff games. The Cowboys have played 1.

No teams with a first year coach & staff has EVER made the SB. The Cowboys have a first year coach.

As do the Steelers and Chargers.
