I agree, we are talking about the second last pick in the 5th for a guy with 3 years of nfl experience and experience in the 3-4 defense. I know that I liked him as an option for the pats a few years back in the draft. I think the risk is a lot less with this linebacker than a linebacker we would draft with that pick.

I think we probably would "do that" but the trick is whether we offer him a nice enough contract that Carolina doesn't choose to match it. I'm certainly hoping we get it done.

I honestly dont see what is so special about the guy.

Im worried he'll just be cut in camp and out the window goes a 5th round pick.

Question is....how much can we offer him so that Carolina wont match? He is primarily ST for them, without much hope of breaking in any time soon. We just hired a bunch of ST guys didnt we??

Based on last year's draft that's exactly where the late #5 we would give up would be going too.

Which 5th round pick has a better chance to make the roster than a 3-year vet? I don't think cap space will be an issue....Seward's been a backup most of his career. And there's always the poison pill option if they really want him, but I think if Carolina was interested in keeping him, they wouldn't have given him the low tender....especially with Dan Morgan being released.

I don't think Carolina is one of those teams with a lot of salary

    cap space.

He also doesn't fit as well in the 4-3.

Exactly. He played a 3-4 in college, a 4-3 in the pros so the potential is there to play better in the 3-4. I think it's the same risk for Seward or a 5th round pick. The difference is Seward has 3 years of experience.

I'm all for bringing him in, he's young with some upside, and as has been mentioned, he's better 3-4 fit than a 4-3. Why not, this guy was the all-time leader in tackles at UNLV, he's versatile and if anything, he'll be some decent depth which we are lacking big time and who knows, with some coaching, maybe he'll start next to Tedy until a Goff is fully groomed assuming Jr. hangs it up.

If you remember, the Pats 4th and 5th round picks went out the window

    this past year.

Why not take the chance? The best inside linebackers will have been exhausted by the end of the fifth round anyway.

Seriously. Duane Starks, anyone? 5th round picks have very little draft value. It really puzzles me that people get worked up over losing a 5th rounder.

I am puzzled that BB didn't sign him to an offer sheet when he visited. My guess is BB made him do some video work and Seward may not have impressed BB enough with the answers, even though Seward is a coach's son.

Either that or the Pats medical staff has raised some concerns.

Maybe the Pats are simply trying to arrange a trade for Seward.

Poison pills don't seem to be in style any longer.

Not quite true. The Pats 4th round pick made the team and was cut due to injuries at the TE position after 9 games.

Rogers was cut because the Pats were trying to sneak him onto the practice squad and Dallas was having none of that because they'd scouted Rogers HEAVILY. Hell, Jerry Jones only had to look out the tower of his downtown Dallas office to watch Rogers play.

But, in the end, yes, he Pats did cut both.
